SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Friends:

OFFICE OF THE CARDINAL

1011 FIRST AVENUE

NEW YORK , NY 10022

September 20, 2020 Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary

As I write to you today, I not only give thanks for our new rector, the Most Reverend James Massa, but also for the exemplary leadership of Monsignor Peter Vaccari, rector for the past eight years; and to Father William Cleary who has been serving as interim rector this year.

Whenever I receive letters from parishioners, no letter delights me more than when I read how much the faithful love their priests. And as you know, many were educated and formed at St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie.

Our seminarians are not only the future shepherds of our flock, but they will also be spiritual guides and leaders in our wider communities. We must be sure that they are as well prepared as possible to serve the Church in New York. And for the last 124 years, Dunwoodie has been that place of formation. Thousands of holy, dedicated and faithful priests have been ordained over these years. It is nationally renowned, held in the highest regard by bishops from around the country. Each year, other dioceses and religious orders send their candidates to our priestly formation program.

As I write to you today, I ask you to consider, in your own prayer, a sacrificial gift to the Annual Seminary Appeal. It will be collected on the weekend of September 27, 2020. Your support will provide tuition, room and board, academic training and spiritual formation for about 25 seminarians of the archdiocese studying here. (If you include seminarians from other dioceses and religious orders, the total population is 64). In a word, your support will help prepare young men who will inspire those letters of admiration that I receive daily about so many of our great priests.

The priesthood is a life of sacrifice and service. As you know, we do not have as many men making the commitment to serve as priests as we did years ago, and I am so grateful to those who accept the Lord's call. Please help me in providing for our seminarians who will hand on the life and traditions of the Church as they embark on their training to become your priests. To learn more visit www.dunwoodie.edu.

With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am,

Devotedly yours in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

FAMILIAR INSIGHTS

Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s Readings. People complain God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians that he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so. In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows that the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work—but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before?

Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus.

— Philippians 2:5

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading When the wicked turn away from their wickedness they have committed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28). Psalm Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading Consider others as better than yourselves; look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1-5]). Gospel Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the Kingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32). OUR COVER ARTWORK MADONNA DEL POPOLO

(MADONNA OF THE PEOPLE) Federico Barocci 1526-1612

This magnificent altarpiece, painted by Italian Baroque Artist, Federico Barocci in 1579, was acquired for the Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria della Pieve. It was transferred in 1787 to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where it still stands. Barocci was known for his emotionally expressive canvasses with many characters and complex compositions. This particular painting has spectacular influences of Baroque art – whirling composition, the whole image is full of movement, and a natural quality which is enlivened by bright colors and strong lighting. The colors are brilliant, and they appear rare and precious thanks to the delicate iridescent effects. Figures such as the crippled man, the blind man, and the woman with children are references to the Seven Works of Mercy of the Madonna. The people turn to Mary, who in turn intercedes before Her Son, represented in an attitude of blessing in the upper part of the painting.

SAINTS MICHAEL, GABRIEL, AND RAPHAEL

FEAST DAY SEPTEMBER 29th On September 29th, the Church remembers and honors the greatest of the angels – Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, for the role they play in salvation history. The word “angel” comes from the Hebrew word for “messenger.” Since creation, angels have appeared as messengers of God, announcing God’s saving plan, and helping to achieve it. Sent from the hands of God, these powerful messengers bring promises of love and of hope. Angels are pure spirits who communicate to us God’s grace, His goodness, and His truth. They are sent to enlighten and guide us, defend us from harm, and lead us on the path to eternal life. Each of the archangels performs a different mission in Scripture: Michael protects; Gabriel announces; Raphael guides. In Hebrew, the name Michael means, “Who is like God.” The Archangel Michael’s will is focused, immovable, and entirely driven toward accomplishing goodness. He is the Prince of the Heavenly Host of Angels and is invoked by Christians in their fight against temptation and the devil. He is the protector of souls and wields his powerful sword of truth and love against those who wish to do us harm. St. John Paul II has said, “The battle against the devil is the principal task of St. Michael the Archangel.” Gabriel means, “God is my strength.” He was sent from God to Nazareth, “to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph … and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, ‘Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you” (Lk 1:27-28). She was “greatly troubled” by his greeting. The angel Gabriel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God” (Lk 1:30). Gabriel is mentioned two other times in scripture; he appeared to Daniel to explain a vision, and to announce the birth of John the Baptist. Raphael means, “God has healed.” You may know Raphael from the Book of Tobit, where the angel traveled with the young Tobias as a healer and companion. The meaning of Raphael’s name reflects the fact that he touched Tobit’s eyes and brought sight from blindness. While Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are the greatest of the angels, St. Bernard wrote of all angels, including our guardian angels, “we should be filled with respect for the presence of angels, devotion because of their loving service, and confidence because of their protection. And, so the angels are here; they are at your side, they are with you, present on your behalf. They are here to protect you and to serve you.”

ST. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

FEAST DAY OCTOBER 1

St. Thérèse lived uneventfully within a convent and battled tuberculosis for most of her life, dying at the age of 24. How did this humble young woman become one of the most honored saints in the Church? Thérèse learned to do all things, especially small things, with great love. Hers was known as the “Little Way.”

"Love proves itself by deeds, so how am I to show my love?” she wondered. “Great deeds are forbidden me. The only way I can prove my love is by scattering flowers and these flowers are every little sacrifice, every glance and word, and the doing of the least actions for love."

Here are more of St. Thérèse’s wonderful quotes that may help us all become a little more like this beloved saint.

“When I die, I will send down a shower of roses from the Heavens. I will spend my Heaven doing good on earth.”

“The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not rob the little violet of its scent, nor the daisy of its simple charm. If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, Spring would lose its loveliness. And, so it is in the world of souls, Our Lord’s living garden.”

“Holiness consists simply in doing God's will, and being just what God wants us to be.”

“Without love, deeds, even the most brilliant, count as nothing.”

“God would never inspire me with desires which cannot be realized; so, in spite of my littleness, I can hope to be a saint.”

“My whole strength lies in prayer and sacrifice, these are my invincible arms; they can move hearts far better than words, I know it by experience.”

“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.”

“For me, prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to Heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy.”

“Then, overcome by joy, I cried, 'Jesus, my love! At last I have found my vocation. My vocation is love! In the heart of the Church, my mother, I will be love, and then I will be all things.”

FEAST OF HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS OCTOBER 2nd

In its paragraph on Guardian Angels, the Catechism of the Catholic Church includes a quote from the great fourth-century theologian, St. Basil of Caesarea, “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him or her to life” (CCC 336). Basil's idea has some scriptural foundation, as Christ says: "Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in Heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in Heaven" (Mt 18:10). Angels are celebrated in the Church's liturgical year with their own special feast day because the Church desires to remind us of the constant care of God's angels for us, through all times and seasons of our life.

Angel of God, be at my side to light, to guard, to rule and guide!
