A Message from Father Joshua 531 West College Avenue, Jonesboro, AR 72401 September 2018 The Missive Greetings everyone! The Sunday after Rally Day , on Sept. 9, we are starting Adult Education in between the 8am and 10am services. Christian education can seem like a dry and intimidating thing. Like eating broccoli. Sure, it’s the “healthy” thing to do but it tastes awful! I hope to make Adult Education the opposite of that experience! I want our Adult Education group to be a fun, engaging conversation. Sermons are often one-directional and can only reflect so much on the diverse points of interest in Scripture, but this hour presents an opportunity for us to go deeper into our faith, into our Anglican tradition, and the history of our Church. It represents the chance for us to talk both about the good that God is doing in our lives--ways we’ve come to better understand our faith and the world we live in--but also to talk about some of those things that are hard to name: struggles, confusions, and doubts. This is going to be a laid back group. Bring your coffee and sweet bread from the narthex over to the parish hall, sit back, and enjoy good-hearted fellowship. I’ll be as happy as a pig in two-day-old slop to have just a handful of people interested in this group. The first few weeks I thought we’d talk about the history and identity of St. Mark’s: both how it originally formed, the different changes it’s gone through, and also where the church might be headed. This is a chance for me to listen to the heritage of the church, how the parish understands itself, and get a sense of what the future of this church might look like. From there I hope to spend a few weeks thinking through some of the fundamentals of faith. To think and talk about our experiences of faith and what makes it different and similar to other aspects of our lives. So consider joining us on September 9th as we start this new offering at our church! I look forward to learning with you all in this way and many other ways to come! †Father Joshua

The Missive

Greetings everyone! The Sunday after Rally Day , on Sept. 9, we are starting Adult Education in

between the 8am and 10am services. Christian education can seem like a dry and intimidating thing. Like eating broccoli. Sure, it’s the “healthy” thing to do but it tastes awful! I hope to make Adult Education the opposite of that experience! I want our Adult Education group to be a fun, engaging conversation. Vacation Bible School 2018

A lot of time, effort and love went into St. Mark’s VBS program. Thank you to all the wonderful folks who helped to make Vacation Bible School a reality. Dan Bishop lead Bible stories, Donald Mankin lead games with the help of Kristen Grommet, Susie Grommet helped with VBS songs, Jill Davis and Terry Rogers helped the kids create cool crafts. served refreshments to the kids all during VBS week. Special thanks to Janice Kroeter, Dan Bishop, Jill Davis, and Terry Rodgers who worked the week before to create murals and props. Thanks also to the individuals who dropped in to color and paint when they could. Thanks also to Al Poston was gracious enough to volunteer to grilled hotdogs for our program closing. We are also grateful to Becky Carr for providing VBS T-shirts for our staff. Because of the gen-erosity and support of so many people, we made a difference in the lives of 21 kids and the young teens and adults who participated in VBS. May you all be blessed , Rose Mary Latanich

Shrimp Boil 2018

Mark your calendars. St. Mark’s 9th annual 2018 Shrimp Boil will be on Saturday, October 27. Our goal is to exceed our all time profit of $4,124. Ticket prices remain the same, $25 for adults and $15 for children (12 and under). Given last year's success we're continuing to make take-out orders available for a pick up at 3:00pm with sit-down seating beginning at its usual time of 5:00pm. This year to make the workload for me a little lighter, the Shrimp Boil will be co-chaired with Conley Fergusion. When you see Conley remember to congratulate him on his promotion. Volunteer sign-up sheets will be posted later as we get closer to the actual date; for now I would like to encourage everyone to consider some way to volunteer. From start to finish it takes about 70 people to make our shrimp-boil a success. At present I’m seeking team leaders. The good news is that some of those positions have been filled. So, if you have a desire to be a “Chief ” and not just an “Indian,” see me anytime before or after one of the 10:00am services and I will show you what is still available. I’ll have more information later. Gary Latanich

Liturgy of the Word with Children

Children’s Chapel format of service is now modeled after the Liturgy of the Word in the Book of Common Prayer, adopting the prayers to the needs of the children. Children listen to the same Gospel reading that adults hear during Sunday worship but in a way that is understanda-ble for them. Our hope and goal are to teach the Word of God in an age-appropriate way which will help nurture a child’s spiritual journey at a child’s own pace and time. Liturgy of the Word with Children is a very important offering for school aged children up to fifth grade. This is celebrated during our Sunday 10:00am Holy Eucharist services. Afterward, children return to the nave to celebrate Holy Communion with their families. Although, we do have some leaders in place, we still are in need of additional leaders. If you would like to serve as an adult leader or are a mature teens who would like to serve as support person, contact Rose Mary ([email protected] or 935-0236) for more information. Please keep St. Mark’s ministries for children in your prayers.

Enrollment in St. Mark’s Christian Education may be small, but the children participating are enthusiastic and faithful to the program. The curriculum we will be using is Living the Good News which follows the Revised Common Lectionary. Christian Education sessions meet on most Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30pm. From 6:00 to 6:30pm is what we call Community Time. This is an opportunity for the kids gather to build community and to share in light refreshment. Afterward, stu-dents go into their prospective class rooms for the evenings lesson. We encourage parents and interested parishioners to help provide some type of a snack for the kids. St. Mark’s Christian Education program runs on volunteer efforts. We are in need of indi-viduals to volunteer to help team teach for this upcoming school year. Please contact Rose Mary ([email protected] or call 935-0236 ) if you would like more information about volunteering on Wednesday evening. Christian Education sessions will resume with an Open House on Wednesday, September 5th. This will be a time to welcome new and returning families to St. Mark’s Christian Edu-cation program. This will also be an opportunity for parents and students to meet with the teaching staff and to learn about activities planned for the upcoming year. Parents and their children will gather in St. Mark’s hall from 6 to 7pm. Light refreshments will be served.
