Gurlitt, Cornelius
The Beginnerfor piano (4 hands), Op. 211
Edited by Anne-Kathrin Brehl
Cornelius Gurlitt is one of the co-founders of 19th-century pianoteaching. Going on from themethod of Carl Czerny, his richeducational material is extremelytopical even today. ‘The Beginner’is a collection of little pieces forfour hands with an easy primoand a somewhat more difficultsecondo part which are ideal formusic lessons at elementary andintermediate levels or as duos forpupil and teacher. The level of diffi-culty increases with regard torhythm, articulation, time and keyas well as dynamics and possibili-ties of musical interpretation. Thus, this colourful collection ofhighly different settings – fromthe solemn adagio via fast move-ments, little marches, choralesand dance forms to the virtuosotarantella – is a valuable additionto the music teaching literature.

Piano Sonata Eb MajorEdited from the sources byChrista London. Revised by UlrichLeisinger. Fingerings by OswaldJonas
Hob. XVI:49
Among the piano sonatas byJoseph Haydn, the Sonata in E flatHob. XVI:49 is probably the piecewe know most about in terms ofgenesis. It is one of the fewsonatas that have survived inHaydn’s own handwriting, and thecorrespondence between Haydnand his 18 years younger admirerMarianne von Genzinger refers tothe work several times. Thatalone was reason enough forChrista Landon, the renowned edi-tor of Haydn’s piano sonatas inthe Wiener Urtext Edition, to pre-sent an edition of this work with afacsimile of Haydn’s autographmany years ago. The new editionnow publishes the facsimile withthe musical text newly revised byUlrich Leisinger.

Chopin, Frédéric
Andante spianatound PolonaisebrillanteEdited from the sources,Fingerings and Notes onInterpretation by Christian Ubber
The genesis of Chopin’s ‘Polonaisebrillante’ leads back to his youthin Warsaw and the years of hisfirst trips as a virtuoso. Designedas a concert piece with orchestra,it takes up a special positionamong the polonaise composi-tions of Chopin. However, by tra-dition, the work has always beenperformed as an extremely effec-tive solo piece. Since no auto-graph has survived, the variousfirst prints are used as sources.Comparisons show that theEnglish first edition must havebeen based on the autographmanuscript of Chopin. The presentnew edition therefore rates thisEnglish edition more highly thanusual. Thus, numerous discrepan-cies and omissions in the Frenchdefinitive edition which generallyis regarded as the most importantsource can be clarified and com-plemented.

When Christa Landon presentedher printed edition of JosephHaydn’s piano sonatas for thefirst time, Haydn’s sonata workswere still overshadowed by theworks of Mozart and Beethoven. The Haydn anniversary in 2009 isa welcome occasion to thoroughlyrevise this ‘legendary’ edition, because new sources have beendiscovered and questions con-cerning authenticity have beenclarified over more than fortyyears; the editorial principles for18th-century music in particularhave markedly changed in themean time. The new edition, too,is divided into four volumes, thecontent of which is compatiblewith that of each of the volumesof the preceding edition. In thenotes on interpretation Robert D.Levin explains essential aspectsof Haydn’s performance practice.

A beginning appearing fromnowhere which, with its consis-tent basic rhythm, reveals Jost’spassion for jazz music, graduallybecomes more intense.Eventually, the music changes intoa softer, lyrical passage, allowingtime to breathe. At the end, motifsfrom the beginning are taken upagain. And after a phase of greatintensity, the work fades intonothing.

Koechlin, Charles
Nocturnefor chromatic harp or piano
Edited by Otfrid Nies
This first print is a rarity: thehighly virtuoso, evocative‘Nocturne’ owes its creation to aninstrument that has only survivedas a museum piece.
Gustave Lyon, the director of theFrench instrument maker Pleyel, commissioned Charles Koechlinas well as several other Frenchcomposers (such as ClaudeDebussy and Maurice Ravel) towrite works for the ‘harpe chro-matique’ developed by him around1900. In contrast to the commonpedal harp, the chromatic harpallows for an unlimited modulato-ry range. Nevertheless, theinstrument did not gain muchacceptance and remained exotic.
Koechlin was aware of the diffi-culty of introducing and establish-ing new instruments. He there-fore, from the very beginning, hadthe piano as an alternative ofequal value in mind when writinghis Nocturne.

Thepiece of almost three minutes’duration is dedicated to his com-position teacher who helped himto put his grief into his own musi-cal language and draw it out ofthe piano.

hidden tracks(2008-2009)
What is an accordion capable of?This piece examines sounds thatare barely audible, and themechanical noise and transientphenomena of the accordion soundwhich – just as if looked at througha composer’s microscope – devel-ops a special charm. Performersand listeners are encouraged tolet themselves in for unfamiliarsounds and rhythms.
In addition, there are mysteriousmusical moments: time and again, the piece seems to end, only tosurprisingly continue after a break. The composer was inspired by ‘...many walks on the beach. Againand again, my gaze fell on tracksin the sand which gradually werecovered by other tracks, erasedby the wind and the waves...’.

Ravel, Maurice
BoleroEdited by Uwe Ludwig
There are very few people whoaren’t familiar with the Bolero byMaurice Ravel – it is a classichighlight, an unparalelled orches-tral gem. Created as ballet musicfor the dancer Ida Rubinstein in1928, it quickly became popularthroughout the world, even if theFrench composer could not under-stand its success: ‘I have writtenbut one masterpiece: the Bolero.Unfortunately, it does not containany music’, he said to fellow com-poser Arthur Honegger. To trans-fer the variations on the steadybolero rhythm with its at least fif-teen-minute crescendo to aninstrument like the organ is a fas-cinating, yet delicate task. KlausUwe Ludwig tried this experimentand now presents a pleasingarrangement of the Bolero: a con-vincing and melodious realisationfor the ‘queen of instruments’ – abrilliant sound experience forevery church or concert hall.

Edited by Klaus Beckmann andClaudia Schumacher
From a musicological point of view,Michael Praetorius (1571-1621)takes up a central function asmediator between the well-estab-lished German tradition ofProtestant church music and thenew monodic, concertante style ofItalian composition at the beginningof the 17th century. Praetorius’organ music covers exclusivelycantus firmus arrangements:three chorale fantasias which fas-cinate by their variety of style, apair of variations with a rich figu-ration technique, and six composi-tionally innovative hymn arrange-ments. With regard to style, hisoeuvre is rooted in the traditionalGerman organ art and providesmajor practical performance tipsbased on partly existing texts.

Orgelsinfonie No. 7Each organ symphony by EnjottSchneider has its own colour andits own theme. Organ SymphonyNo. 7 ‘Von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit’ isdominated by the theme of ‘time’:from the flowing rumbling of timein ancient beginnings (‘In princi-pio’ – 1st movement) and periodicto the intellectually incomprehen-sible revolving (‘Zeit der Sterne’ –2nd movement). After the thirdmovement (‘Zeit des Menschen’),a valse triste, infused by analmost humorous hectic atmos-phere, the symphony ends with akind of ‘Amen!’ in the fourthmovement. Schneider sums it up:‘It is good as it is, we do notunderstand the course of timeanyway.’ With regard to style, hiscomposition is based on elementsof minimal music which he com-bines with the tradition of theEuropean organ composition; it isat the same time a testimony tothe composer’s flexibility and ver-satility.

Orgelsinfonie No. 8Reflexionen zu Anton Bruckners 8. Sinfonie
In his Organ Symphony No. 8 ‘InMemoriam’, following an idea ofthe cathedral organist Silvius vonKessel from Erfurt (and dedicateeof the work), Enjott Schneider car-ries on where Anton Bruckner leftoff, processes themes from thelatter’s Symphony No. 8 variative-ly and contrasts it to ‘Haus-Choraldes Erfurter Doms’, ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme’. Bruckner’smaterial is used as a startingpoint and further developed bySchneider in four movements: typ-ically enough, the initial move-ment is called ‘Metamorphosen’before an almost eerie atmos-phere is created in a ‘Scherzo sin-istro’. The twelve-note series (inthe third movement), embedded ina transcendental mood, eventuallydevelops into the chorale which, now as main theme of the finale, amalgamates with Bruckner’sstylistic moments and leads to amagnificent end – an exciting androusing piece of music.

Orgelsinfonie No. 9One of the first things that comesto one’s mind when reading thetitle of Organ Symphony No. 9‘Pathétique’ by Enjott Schneider isanother work with this epithet:Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6.And that is no coincidence: Thecomposer regards his organ workas an homage to this ‘elder sis-ter’. While Tchaikovsky, in asecret programme, made out hisown life to be a struggle and longordeal to the point of his suspect-ed suicide, Enjott Schneider pre-sents those hours as the ultimatetale of woe in which Jesus hadwell and truly become human, fatefully bearing the pain and mis-ery of all people. ‘Gethsemane’,‘Geiselung: Ecce homo’, ‘Golgatha’and ‘Grablegung’: Maria Magda -lena’ are the names of the stagesand movements. The Greek word‘pathos’ means ‘strong emotion, feeling, passion or suffering’ – inSchneider’s Organ Symphony No. 9,this comes true, musically, in hisinner conflict, struggle, wrestlingwith his fate, cruelty of the cruci-fixion and deathly silence.

There is hardly a violinist who hasnot dealt with some or even all 42‘Kreutzer etudes’ sometime orother: Études ou caprices formpart of the standard repertoire.Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831)has not least remained unforgot-ten because of Beethoven’s violinsonata of the same name – awork which had never beenplayed by the violin virtuoso him-self and not even been appreciat-ed by him.
For his teaching activities, Kreutzerwrote his 40 Études ou caprices(two were later added by another)in 1796. Among them is the Frenchviolinist Pierre Rode (1774-1839)who added his 24 Capricen in‘Form einer Etüde für Violineallein’ to this genre. Even today, they still form part of the indis-pensable repertoire of violin stu-dents, particularly since, notwith-standing the purely technical side, they are also attractive pieces ofmusic. The 24 Caprices are impor-tant contributions to Rodes music-educational work. Poème lyrique ·Invention ·Nocturnefor violin and piano
First Edition by Marina Lobanova
The compositions published herefor the first time are highly inter-esting, especially because theyrepresent two creative periods:Poème lyrique was written in the1910s and is a proof of the com-poser’s intensive search for hisown style. Invention and Nocturnewere composed in Moscow in1935, they are testimonies to thepolitical pressure exerted on thecomposer to write in a more com-prehensible, less avant-gardeway. All three pieces are ideal formusic lessons, yet also effectiveon the stage.
Roslawez studied composition andviolin in Moscow. He was one ofthe leading figures of the musicalscene in the 1920s. Treated withincreasing hostility for politicalreasons, up to being barred frompursuing his career, he spent thelast years of his life in poverty.

Histhree sonatas for violoncello andpiano are of amazing musicalquality which puts them right upwith sonatas of Johannes Brahms. It is all the more surprising, how-ever, that a noteworthy urtext edi-tion of these works did not existup until now; cellists often had tofall back on copies of the first edi-tions only a few of which wereextant. This gap is now closed bythe Wiener Urtext Edition – rightin time for the 100th anniversary ofthe composer’s death. It encom-passes all three sonatas in onevolume, thus adding three master-pieces of Romantic chambermusic to the less than compre-hensive repertoire of the 19th cen-tury for violoncello and piano.

For reasons that we still cannot comprehendtoday, Clara Schumann, supported by JosephJoachim and Johannes Brahms, suppressed the late works of Robert Schumann and evendestroyed some of them. It was not until 1937 that the Violin Concerto in D minor,Schumann's last major work, was brought to the public's attention.
With its very own mixture of neo-Baroquestyle and ambiguous virtuosity, it stands forthe unfathomable sides of German Romanticismand already portends the concert aesthetics of the 20th century.

‘Amethyst Deceiver’ is a shortpiece inspired by the idea of amysterious woodland setting inwhich strange things come to life.‘Amethyst deceivers’ are tiny pur-ple mushrooms, rarely seen, butwhen found, picked and cookedhave an intense flavour. Casken’s2007 work for solo oboe was writ-ten for a student recital and isrequired to be played ‘freely, andwith an air of mischief’. This lively, energetic work would be a perfectaudition piece or encore

Kreisler, Fritz
Marche miniatureviennoisefor string trioEdited by Fredo Jung
Kreisler’s original compositionsare lovely miniatures, lively andcatchy, even with a touch ofmelancholy – yet full of charm andelegance. Arranged for string trio, they are enjoyable to play andworth listening to and a valuableaddition to the repertoire – idealfor sociable music-making or aspieces to end a ‘serious’ concert.
A wonderful example is hisMarche miniature viennoise, withits humorous theme and a rathermarch-like middle section – andeverywhere, Kreisler takes theaudience by surprise with a littleViennese snide humour.
Even the serenade Polichinelle isa capricious little piece of musicwith harmonically surprisingtwists.

Beethoven, Ludwig van / Birtel, Wolfgang
Fox, you’vestolen the gooseas Ludwig van Beethoven could(possibly) have composed it forstring quartet
What do Beethoven and the chil-dren’s song Fuchs Du hast dieGans gestohlen have in common?Nothing, strictly speaking. Althoughthe song was written as early as1824 (and theoretically, Beet hovencould have known it), it has notleft deep marks on his œuvre. Butwhat if he had known it? WolfgangBirtel pursued this question and,in reply to it, conceived a sympho-ny for string quartet: behind eachmovement is an original sympho-ny by Beethoven. The children’ssong appears as the main theme inthe final movement of SymphonyNo. 1, in the famous funeral marchof Eroica, fate knocks at the door(of the goose house) in remem-brance of Symphony No. 5, and thework ends with Ode to the RoastGoose (Symphony No. 9). A funnyand cleverly arranged collage, aperforming and listening pleasurein the footsteps of Beethoven.

Elliott Carter is 'one of America's most distinguished creative artistsin any field' – said Aaron Copland about the composer who wasborn in New York on 11 December 1908.Throughout the world, Carter enjoys the status of one of America's leading voices in the classical music tradition. His complex, colourful compositions often reflect themes of human relations.
‘There is often wit and humour to be heard in [Carter's] work; anger in some of the earlier big pieces; increasing lyricism and beauty in the compositions of the recent decades. He is America's great musical poet.’

1st Wind Quintet„Muzika aizlidojusajiem putniem“„Music for Fleeting Birds“
This is the first of two works bythe successful Latvian composerfor this instrumentation. It waswritten in 1977 and shows hisearly compositional style: whilefreely notated in the beginning, improvisational sections thenchange over to chordal passageswith sharply accentuated rhythm. It is particularly in the freelynotated parts of the work thatbirdcalls and nature soundsappear as onomatopoeic sounds.
The particular challenge is not inthe virtuosity of the individualpart, but in creating the specialatmosphere through perfect har-mony.
As in most other works by thecomposer, the bond with natureplays a special role. Unlike anyother composer, he gives nature amusical voice.

With Granica, Enjott Schneiderpresents a work in which threeinstruments play alongside eachother in a concertante manner onan equal basis. As in most of hispieces, he makes careful use ofcontemporary playing techniquesand combines turbulent passageswith quiet, narrative phases.
The one-part work starts with a‘dance of life’, so called by EnjottSchneider. In the course of thepiece, this lively, dynamic dancechanges and eventually disap-pears in the ‘depths of death’.
Granica comes from the Slavonicand means ‘border’. The workwas commissioned by theEmbassy of Cyprus.

A Parliament of Owlsfor mixed choir and ensemble
A Parliament of Owls is a celebra-tion of collective nouns in threecontrasting movements, with sax-ophone, percussion and pianoduet accompaniment. English col-lective nouns encapsulate in anintrinsically attractive way some-thing characteristic of the group, for example ‘a gaggle of geese’,‘a piteousness of doves’, ‘anostentation of peacocks’. CarolBarratt’s text assembles theseevocative expressions into hilari-ous nonsense poems entitled‘Irrestistible and noisy’, ‘Quietlysitting still’ and ‘Monstrous may-hem’ which will challenge yourchoir’s powers of enunciation asnever before. A riotous piecewhich will entertain performersand audience alike, and very likelybring the house down!

Bach, Johann Sebastian
Ouverture (Suite)No. 3 D majorfor chamber orchestra and bassocontinuo, BWV 1068
Edited by Harry Newstone
Before Bach became interested inthe orchestral suite – or overture-, various major German com-posers like Fasch and Telemannhad already contributed to itsdevelopment. The fact that four ofsuch suites by Bach have survivedis owed to the enthusiasm of C. F.Penzel. The member of the St.Thomas Choir in Leipzig madecopies of Bach’s manuscriptswhich he had found at the St.Thomas School. As a conse-quence, it is impossible to deter-mine the date or the order of thesuites with certainty. Latestresearch, however, has proventhat the Suite in D major, original-ly composed for strings only, in itsfinal form dates back to the timearound 1731.

Schumann, Robert
Symphony No. 3Eb major„Rhenish“, Op. 97
Edited by Linda Correll Roesner
To occupy the post of municipalmusic director, Schumann came toDüsseldorf on the Rhine in 1850,and it was probably the impres-sions of the Rhineland thatinspired the composer to write hisSymphony No. 3. In a letter to thepublisher Simrock, Schumannhimself wrote that the peculiari-ties of Rhenish life had foundexpression in the work. ToSchumann, the view of theCathedral of Cologne was a high-light of his trips in the area sur-rounding Düsseldorf; even if thereare no records testifying to hisattending a church service, italmost seems as if the impres-sions of such a service arereflected in the fourth movementof the symphony which was origi-nally entitled ‘In the Character ofthe Accompaniment to a SolemnCeremony’.

‘A man, a great artist who left hismark on a whole epoch, has died’wrote Verdi in 1868, referring toRossini whom he had greatlyadmired. To honour the deceased,Verdi wanted to compose a masstogether with the most renownedItalian composers of his time. Butthe composition initiated by himwas never presented to the audi-ence, not least because of wound-ed vanities. Only the death of theItalian national poet AlessandroManzoni prompted Verdi to makethe mass torso into a completerequiem which was to conquerthe whole of Europe with its mar-vellous temperament and lyricalverve after the resounding suc-cess of the world premiere.

His work on ‘Prince Igor’ begunafter the world premiere ofSymphony No. 1 finished in favourof the second symphony, but partof the musical material found itsway into the new composition, and even the extant programmetestifies to the critical analysis ofthe music theatre: the gatheringof Russian warriors in the firstmovement, the Old Slavonic bardin the andante, and the partyscene to the sounds of the gusli inthe finale.

With the symphonic poemFontane di Roma, Respighi beganthe so-called ‘Roman Trilogy’, tak-ing up a wide-spread subject inthe fields of literature and music.Since the French harpsichordists, waterworks have always been thesubject of programmatic music, and even the poetry of the ‘sei-cento’ already dealt with theRoman fountains. Respighi’s set-ting, however, is not just an ono-matopoeic representation ofwaterworks. As is explained byRespighi in his specially attachedprogramme, the music capturesmoods and pictures that are gen-erated within the viewer whilelooking at the fountains.

The chamber music works areamong Hindemith’s most success-ful instrumental works of the1920s. At the world premiere of‘Chamber Music No. 1’, the audi-ence even demanded a repetitionof the third and forth movements. But the title of the series of worksconsisting of seven compositionsaltogether is misleading: The indi-vidual pieces rather have concer-tante soloistic features. No. 1 ischaracterized by ‘instruments’,like a can filled with sand and asiren, as well as the rich use ofthe percussion; No. 2, on theother hand, resembles a pianoconcerto.
