Theurgical use of Psalms

The source of this material is from the works of Abbe Julio, the renowned healer, exorcist andcontemporary of Papus , as translated and presented by Mouni Sadhu in his book “Theurgy.”Access to this paper is to be regarded as a sacred trust and it is expected that the material presentedhere will be treated as such .

How does Theurgy differ from ordinary prayer, and what are the necessary preliminary preparations. .

1. The Theurgist knows that they are merely an instrument for the DivineBeing. They do not seek to impose their own will. Theurgical action alwayscommences with the deep knowledge that God is Love and wants what is bestfor all of the Creation, with no exceptions.

2. All Theurgic works are performed from deep conviction of this lastpoint, and it is therefore important for Theurgists to develop onepointedness. Any misgivings or doubts will seriously interfere with thefree flow of energy. No theurgical action should be attempted if suchdoubts arise and do not succumb to being put to rest, through e.g. apreliminary period of prayer, contemplation and meditation.

3. All stimulants and intoxicants, eg coffee, tobacco, wine, meat, and sexshould be avoided for at least 8 hours before an operation. Many ordersinsist on a totally vegetarian diet.

4. Both the Theurgist and the place of work should be in a state of purityon all planes. Normally one showers beforehand, and dons a speciallyconsecrated robe, used only for this purpose. This helps in building up aparticular vibration.

5. The place should be cleaned thoroughly and purified by sprinklingconsecrated water and blessed with consecrated incense.

6. One should at the outset be aware of and ask for the help of all theangels, saints and initiates in ones lineage, or to whom one finds a deepconnection.

7. On no account is money to be accepted for any theurgical workwhatsoever. It is impossible to "purchase" heavenly things with earthlymoney.

8. Theurgists should be gainfully employed and as free of debt on allplanes as possible. Arguments and discords are best resolved beforetheurgical action takes place.

9. A life of daily prayer, serenity and calm are to be especiallycultivated, since these help to "charge" one's theurgical battery.Unnecessary talk, criticism and gossip are to be minimized.

10. Theurgical instruments, e.g. candles, containers for blessed oil and Holywater are to be kept in a special case, and clothes, robes, altar linen ,Holy Books are to be only used and made known to fellow aspirants andinitiates.

A typical Theurgical ritual

One must never attempt theurgical action in a frivolous mood . Furthermore one must be entirelyconvinced that one acts for the benefit of the Divine Plan .

After purifying the space, one commences by saying an invocation, eg TheSign of the Cross, and lighting a candle, and incense.The Psalm is said slowly and with awareness.After a quiet period of meditation and thankfulness, one extinguishes thecandle and says "Amen" which means "sealed in trust".One is advised to go and have a drink of water and then come back and puteverything away and then immediately go about one's daily work.
