This instruction provides detailed

Technology training gives personnel

the basic knowledge they need before

beginning Nokia-specific product and

task-based training.

Product-based training comprises

various courses that give trainees the

knowledge and skills necessary to handle

Nokia equipment and fully understand

how it is implemented. Product-based

training combines classroom sessions

and practical exercises on a test bed.

The classroom training, which is the

foundation of the training solution,

is divided into three levels: introductory,

intermediate and advanced.

Introductory Courses

These courses, which are an ideal starting

point for new employees, provide a

general understanding of the concepts,

terminology and functionality of Nokia

products and systems. They are targeted

to all technical personnel and also

recommended for management.

Combine learning channels for the best results

Customer Open Courses

Open Courses are available to all Nokia

customers. They are based on standard

content and provide the best solution

when a limited number of employees

require specific training.

On-the-job training can be a continuation

of or an alternative to classroom training

at a Nokia Training Centre. The individual

training needs of personnel are used to

define and agree on on-the-job training

that supports everyday work practices.

Workshops normally focus on specific

tasks or skills and aim to improve a

trainee’s practical skills. A test bed at a

Training Centre or the customer’s

premises is typically used. The supporting

training documents consist of either

our own training material or in some

cases material from Nokia Product Lines.

Workshops are an excellent way to

develop troubleshooting skills.

Seminars aim to update customers on

the latest developments in specific

technology areas. The target groups range

from system experts to management

personnel. The topics can be either

Nokia driven or initiated in response to

customer requests, with content drawn

from various Nokia sources.

E-learning enables personnel to learn

at their own pace at home or in the

workplace. This channel is used for

introductory and system level technology

as well as new feature releases. Some

solutions are prerequisites for task-based

classroom training. Training programmes

based on e-learning use Internet-based

learning modules, reference material,

assignments and multimedia applications

via Nokia Online Services (NOLS).

Classroom training can be knowledge

based, skill based or both. Training

equipment for practical sessions is either

in the same room or at a nearby test bed.

Classes are held in suitably equipped

classrooms at a Nokia Training Centre,

the customer’s premises, or another

training facility.

Customer Dedicated Courses

These courses are scheduled exclusively

for customer personnel. A modular format

makes it easy to customise course content

and length to match your needs. This is a

cost-effective option for training larger

groups of employees.

Nokia Online Services (NOLS) and e-learningNokia Online Services (NOLS) is an

e-business channel that complements

our conventional services offering.

NOLS provides direct access to product

information; training, marketing and

tendering materials, information about

preventive maintenance, trouble

management and software support.

Many e-learning solutions are also

available through NOLS. In the future,

these solutions will comprise facilitation,

which supports collaboration with other

learners. Discussion forums and virtual

classrooms provide a channel for

exchanging questions and views with a

learning group, supported by an online

facilitator.

Technology and System Level Training

Nokia Technology and System Level Training will give you a thorough grounding of GSM/EDGE, GPRS and WCDMA technology, as well as an understanding of all the relevant Nokia products.

Three e-learning programmes, Understanding GSM (UndGSMe), GPRS Overview (GPRSOVe) and Introduction to 3G (3G INTe), give non-technical personnel and other target groups a basic knowledge of these technologies.

This can be followed up with classroom training as a prerequisite for our technical courses: GSM and GPRS System Training (2G SYSTRA) and 3G System Training (3G SYSTRA). In addition, the ATM in UMTS Networks (3G ATM) course introduces the relevant aspects of ATM with a special focus on its use in 3G networks.

System level aspects of GPRS networks are now included in the 2G SYSTRA course. However, participants of the old SYSTRA course who need to achieve GPRS knowledge, should take the interim GPRSSYS course.

Finally, two e-learning programmes introduce system level aspects of mobile communication networks: • EDGE System (EDGESYSe) covers the

EDGE standard available with Nokia BSS Release S10.

• IPMMSYSe introduces the Nokia solution of the All-IP core network architecture based on 3G PP Release 5.

Mobile Network Security

Mobile network security can only be achieved if security awareness and vigilance are present throughout the entire operating process, from planning to operation. For that reason, we recommend that at least the network element engineering personnel are trained to a good level of knowledge in network security and are able to recognise and counter vulnerabilities in the organisation’s network.

A well-founded understanding of security issues and principles is needed to deal with today’s latest threats, which quickly become tomorrow’s outdated threats.

Other providers of security training typically concentrate on pure ISP environments, discussing methods and tools, which are not applicable in the context of 3G mobile networks.

In contrast, we emphasise an understanding of the security aspects of the protocols, platforms and environments involved, in order to prepare your staff for likely threats.

Courses and tailoringThe Mobile Network Security Course (MNSEC) is the initial course within the Nokia Network Security Training Portfolio. It focuses on the security needs and features in mobile networks, giving enough of an overview to avoid the need for security staff to attend courses in all subsystems.

The OSS Security Course (OSSSEC) and Core Network Security Course (CNSEC) are new in the portfolio and the hands-on complement for the MNSEC.

The practical courses are consisting of a concise theory review and hands-on practise. Exercises are using both a well-prepared playground and the Nokia mobile network equipment.

Tailored workshops can be adapted from standard courses and our case-study-pool. These workshops could then emphasise limited areas of the network e.g. the charging gateway, DNS security, OSS host security etc.

Many security problems and network outages are related to popular erroneous management decisions. The famous SANS Institute has identified the seven top management errors related to network security:• Pretend the problem will go away• Authorise reactive, short-term fixes

so problems re-emerge quickly• Fail to realise how much money

their information and organisational reputation are worth

• Rely primarily on a firewall for security perimeter protection

• Fail to deal with the operational aspects of security

• Fail to understand the relationship of information security to the business problem – they understand physical security, but do not see the consequence of poor information security

• Assign untrained people to maintain security and provide neither the training nor the time to make it possible to do the job

Platform Training SolutionNokia is currently using four main platform technologies for mobile communications network equipment:• DX 200 Switching Platform for GSM

equipment (BSC, MSC, HLR), as well as for 2G SGSN.

• ATM based IPA 2800 platform for 3G RNC and MGW. This platform has many operational similarities with the DX 200 platform, which allows common training solutions for both.

Field Maintenance

Field Maintenance of Nokia Equipment

The field maintenance group is responsible for technical tasks carried out on equipment widely distributed in the field, such as base stations and microwave equipment. The work can be divided into installation, commissioning and first line maintenance. First line maintenance manages preventive maintenance, as well as problems under the direction of the network surveillance team. This group might also be involved in system upgrades together with engineering support.

Our standard training solution in the field maintenance area covers commissioning courses for the different equipment types. Since they are very customer specific, we deliver training on pure installation, combined installation and commissioning and maintenance as dedicated courses. The Switching Core Network (SCN) engineering group is responsible for providing second line maintenance for the following network elements: Nokia Mobile Switching Center (MSC/MSCi) and Home Location Register (HLR/HLRi), as well as Media Gateway for 3G MSC (MGW). This comprises remote and/or on-site routine analysis of network faults, in-depth fault analysis based on the experienced use of test programs, performing corrective action and reporting back to network surveillance. Further typical responsibilities include process re-engineering when new hardware or software is introduced, interfacing with the Nokia Help Desk, supporting network optimisation, network planning and marketing.

After participating system level and platform training the first step in the SCN area is training on Operation and Maintenance. Aim of this is to develop system knowledge and learn SCN engineering’s day-to-day tasks like creation procedures in subscriber management, signalling and routing. There are three alternative solutions depending on the used technologies (GSM, 3G, or migration from GSM to 3G).

Following OM level training, we offer advanced courses in the following areas:• Integration – aim is to gain

fundamental experience in setting up a switch from scratch to first call.

• Troubleshooting – aim is to learn a systematic approach to troubleshooting and develop different troubleshooting styles by practicing on multiple simulated fault scenarios.

• Recovery – aim is to get experience in disaster recovery by practicing on worst case scenarios like multiple hard disk crashes.

• Routing – aim is to plan and verify complex routing scenarios based on sophisticated features like automatic congestion control or selective circuit reservation.

• Signalling / Message Analysis – aim is to lay the fundamentals for troubleshooting by practically tracing and analysing signalling messages as well as interpreting signalling statistical data.

• Call Control – aim is to gain certain insight on Nokia DX 200 software architecture and functionality using message monitoring tools on call scenarios.

The Packet Core Network (PCN) engineering group is responsible for providing second line maintenance for the following network elements: 2G SGSN resp. 3G SGSN, GGSN, BG, LIG, DNS. This comprises remote and/or on-site routine analysis of network faults, in-depth fault analysis based on the experienced use of test programs, performing corrective actions and reporting back to network surveillance. Further typical responsibilities include process re-engineering when new hardware or software is introduced, interfacing with the Nokia Help Desk, supporting network optimisation, network planning and marketing.

The PCN training solution offered by Nokia comprises a number of different elements:• Basic knowledge through classroom

courses (IPCORE).• OM-level hands-on training courses for

the different elements of the PCN core network (2G SGSNOM, 3G SGSNOM, GGSNOM, LIGOM).

• Advanced product knowledge and troubleshooting skills in intensive small training sessions (GPRSSIG, PCNMAC, PCNTSH).

• Release trainings comprising additional knowledge and skills required for new network element software releases (GPRSREL 2, SGSNREL 2).

Prerequisites for these trainings are determined by the platform, on which the Network Elements are implemented, see also page 20.

Charging and billing in the GPRS/3G packet core is addressed by this group of courses covering ‘Charging Gateway Operation and Maintenance (CGOM)’. HP Unix is a mandatory prerequisite.

There is no off-the-shelf course for charging and billing in the NSS/3G switching core, since the demand is for very customer-specific training in this area. However, courses and workshops can be tailored to cover topics like: • Charging administration • Time charging and accounting • Charging attribute analysis • Regional charging features • Call control charging and statistics

It is also possible to combine these with modules from the CGOM course.

Network Operations and Control

Network Surveillance

The network surveillance group typically monitors the telecom network 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The main responsibilities are to detect and analyse network faults, take corrective actions and track them in a trouble ticket system. The network surveillance team also guides the field maintenance teams through trouble management.

Our training solution for network surveillance comprises two different intermediate courses 2G/3G NOCSUR. Aim of these courses is to provide knowledge and skills to monitor the radio and core network, as well as to do easy fault clearing. Furthermore we offer two advanced courses 2G/3G NOCSUREXP, which are targeted for senior personnel such as supervisors or line managers in network surveillance. Aim of these courses is to provide knowledge on process optimisation in network surveillance, as well as on alarm flow reduction. Especially in the area of network surveillance training customer specific training solutions may be recommended, which can be optimised to the used network configuration. Radio Network Confi guration

The radio network configuration personnel group typically implements enhancements and changes to the network elements’ configuration on a network or area level. Other tasks are to maintain network documentation and manage software and hardware. The radio network configuration group co-operates closely with the network rollout and network planning departments.

Even though the operating principles are the same, the tools required by radio network configuration personnel are different for 2G and 3G networks. Therefore this training foresees two alternatives for the different networks.

In the advanced area there is demand for very customer-specific training, so no standard training solutions are offered.
