Last day of Term 4
November 1st, 2018
Term 4, Week 4
Last week Tracey Gray was a guest presenter at the SAKG professional
development day in Collingwood. Cath VanEngelen attended as well
and has reported back that it was very informative and they learnt a lot.
An observation noted was that they are one of the few of the original
schools who are still continuing the program. Personally, I reflected how
lucky we are to have an experienced and dedicated teacher
co-ordinating the program at our school. Both Cath and Tracey have a
passion for delivering this part of our curriculum to maximise the learning
opportunities for the students.
The Junior School Council (JSC) met last week and discussed a number of
agenda items. They would like to hold either a pyjama and movie day or
host a coin trail to raise money for a Christmas charity. They have decid-
ed to buy a rotating compost bin to help with composting food waste at
school. We spoke about organising a House Day on the last Monday of
term. They also considered a proposal from a group of students who play
soccer on a dirt patch on the side of the school. They want to put syn-
thetic grass down. The JSC agreed that they would help with this project.
Well done to Ella and Jordyn who recently competed in a public speaking
competition at Brauer College. They had to give a prepared speech and
then had 5 minutes to prepare an impromptu 1 minute speech. Both girls
thought it was a great experience.
This afternoon the students and teachers in the 5/6 area are presenting a
5/6 Expo to showcase the skills and knowledge learnt during the year. This
has been quite a task putting this event together and I thank the teachers
for their enthusiasm and commitment. I would also like to thank the
parents who have helped prepare food during the kitchen class. A big
congratulations to the students for the creation of their interviews which
will be presented as a movie. I am really looking forward to seeing it all
come to life!
Good luck to all the students who have entered items into the Port Fairy
Show. Thank you to Maree and all the staff for their assistance in
preparing the entries. The Parents and Friends group are holding a stall
selling lemonade, homemade goodies and coffee which I’m sure will be
a great success. Thank you to all those in our school community who
have assisted this by donating goods, offering to help on the day and
preparing the sale items. Your efforts are valued and appreciated!

Next week we have our annual PFCS school cup involving the Grade 6 and their foundation
buddies. This is a much loved tradition and involves the buddies making a costume piece
and then racing each other in heats. Families are welcome to attend and racing begins
between 2:15 and 2:30pm.
Also on Tuesday, Debbie Dowell our Literacy Leader is holding a Parent forum from 7pm in
her classroom. The presentation will be focussed on the Sounds Write approach to teaching
phonics and phonemic awareness.
Finally, I will be taking Long Service Leave for a week from Thursday 8th to Wednesday 14th
of November. Following this, I am attending a principal conference in Lorne on the 15th and
16th of November. During my absence members of the Executive Leadership team; Cyn-
thia, Dean and Debbie will be in charge.

Next Tuesday we will be having our annual run of the Port Fairy Cup. Foun-
dation students will race with their Grade Six buddy. In Reading we are
learning how to read the pictures to improve our comprehension. In Writing
we are finishing our focus on information reports and in Maths we are contin-
uing our focus on time.
Grade 3/4’s
We have been having a great time following up our Camp in class with gra-
phing of the most popular activities in Maths and thank you letters in writing.
In Reading we have been focusing on figurative language such as ‘pull up
your socks!’ Runners/walkers is well and truly on the way with laps building
up fast. Not to mention fitness!
Weather is also warming up so please remind your children to be sunsmart!
Grade 5/6’s
We have put the word out for some help with transportation to Surf Groms,
however before it can happen there is paperwork that must be completed
regarding consent and insurance. We will notify you next week. Therefore,
we will be walking to East Beach this week (2nd) and aim to have helpers for
the 9th Nov. The 5/6 Expo is a new initiative, so we hope that you support it
by coming along and celebrating your child’s work. Sovereign Hill letters
have been completed and will be sent next week. The 5/6 staff were ex-
tremely pleased with the quality and effort that students put into their letter.

CURRICULUM DAY—NO SCHOOL
Please note that there will be Curriculum Day on Tuesday 27th November, and
therefore students will not be required to attend school on this day.
Remembrance Day Poppies The poppy has a long association with Remembrance Day. ... Once the conflict was
over the poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the otherwise barren
battlefields. The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol to the fallen
was realised by the Canadian surgeon John McCrae in his poem In Flanders Fields.
This year poppies will be for sale at the School Office. $1, $2, $5.
Please refer to the entry form on the reverse side.
If you wish to pre-order your child/ren’s lunches for Term 4, please collect a Menu from
the office.
Orders can be placed on a casual basis by sending $6 in an envelope that is clearly
marked with “Café Lunch” and the child’s name.
Next week’s menu:
Tuesday: Sausage Rolls (DF, GF, V)
Wednesday: Spaghetti Bolognaise (DF, GF)
Thursday: Cheese burgers
SAKGP Cooking Classes: Please also note that when your child is participating in the
SAKGP cooking classes each fortnight they will be sharing a small lunch together. This
consists of a taste from each of the dishes prepared during the session. You may wish to
pack a snack and a small lunch to suit your child's needs.
FRESH FRUIT FRIDAY
Thank you to those people who have offered to help with the
preparation of our fresh fruit each Friday morning.
We are looking for parent helpers for just a short time each Friday
morning (up to an hour at the most) preparing fruit platters and
taking them to classrooms.
Please let Ally or Jenni know of your preferred day/s or write your name down on the
