1.0 CONSULTINGBRIEF

DayDesignPtyLtdwasengagedbyDincelConstructionSystemtoprovideAcousticOpinionsontheRwandRw+CtrratingsforarangeofwallsconstructedusingtheirDCS110wallsystem.Theobjectiveistoprovideacousticaldatausefultobuildingdesignersforinclusionintechnicalpublications.

ScopeofWork:

Review the results of systems incorporating the DCS110 wall tested at CSIRO, HighettprovidedbyDincel.

Modelbasicwallsystemsusingacousticmodellingsoftware.

ComparetheRwandRw+Ctrpredictionswithtestresults.

ProvideAcousticOpinionsontheRwandRw+CtrratingsforarangeofDCS110systemstomeettheDeemed‐to‐SatisfyProvisionsintheBCA.

PrepareanAcousticalOpinionReport.

2.0 PREDICTIONOFRWANDCTR

Rw (weightedsoundreduction index)providesanacoustic ratingof thesound insulationofwallsandpartitionsduetoairbornesoundofthehumanvoice.Soundinsulationvarieswithfrequency and is dependent on the type of wall construction, however, the Rw provides aconvenientmethodofratingsoundinsulationusingasinglenumber.ThehighertheRwratingthebetterthesoundinsulationprovidedbythepartition.

Ctr is a correction factor to account for the sound insulation performance in the lowerfrequencies.TheCtrfactorisaddedtotheRwratingtogetanoverallRw+Ctrairbornerating.Formasonrywalls,theCtrfactoristypicallybetween–5and–3whileforplasterboardwallsthefactormayoftenbeaslowas–12,dependingontheconstructiontype.

TheAcousticOpinionsexpressedinthisreportarebasedfirstlyoncalculationsmadeusingtheMarshall Day Acoustics Acousti‐Max software and secondly by comparison with SoundTransmission Loss tests for similar plasterboard constructions. Acoustic opinions are thenprovided in the light of our general acoustic experience. Factors taken into account in ourcalculations include: the surface mass of the plasterboard, Young’s Modulus, the criticalfrequencyandspeedofsoundinplasterboard,theeffectofaircavitiesandacousticinsulationbetweenstuds.

WeareoftheopinionthatusingtheAcousti‐Maxsoftwareandmakingcorrectionsbasedoncomparisonwithtestresultsthatourpredictionaccuracyisintheorderof±2dB.

Becauseofthecomplexityofsuchcalculations,approvedlaboratorytestresults(inaccordancewithAustralianStandardAS1191:2002andAS/NZS1276.1:1999)arealwayspreferred.

4.0 BUILDINGCODEOFAUSTRALIA–ACOUSTICREQUIREMENTS

TheinformationinthissectionisextractedfromtheBuildingCodeofAustralia(BCA),whichisnow part of the National Construction Code (NCC), Part F5 “Sound Transmission andInsulation”.TheacousticrequirementsandthebuildingsolutionsinthisreportarebasedontheDeemed‐to‐SatisfyProvisionsoftheBCA.

TheObjectiveofthisPartistosafeguardoccupantsfromillnessorlossofamenityasaresultofunduesoundbeingtransmitted‐

(a) betweenadjoiningsole‐occupancyunits;and

(b) fromcommonspacestosole‐occupancyunits;and

(c) frompartsofdifferentclassificationstosole‐occupancyunits.

TheObjectiveonlyappliestoaClass2or3buildingoraClass9cagedcarebuilding.

(ii) forotherthanmasonry,thereisnomechanicallinkagebetweenleavesexceptattheperiphery.
