Classification/Taxonomy of Logos by Per Mollerup

First Project

The first project was to go out and collect 100+ logos from local sources. After collecting these logos we are to create a system of classification, then narrow them down to 20 that are of most interest. Logos are visual signs. A sign is something that stands for something else. Semantics is a study of signs and how they function. A sign can function in three ways to convey meaning: Icon, Index and Symbol.

Iconically - a sign that bears a direct similarity to resemblance to the thing it represents. Literal description of reality Indexically - a sign that arises by virtue of some sort of factual or causal connection with its object. Implies a connection to something elseSymbolically - a sign that operates within an agreed set of conventions or rules. Based on personal and cultural experience
