The Nottingham has awarded over £25,000 of grants to local groups across the region (South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Leicesterhire) in the Autumn 2012. This grant is for Southey and Owlerton Area Regeneration (SOAR), Sheffield (grant of £4803) - SOAR support and enable local people by working in partnership with them, thereby increasing access to economic opportunities through engagement and assessment. They also provide referral to job clubs, employability training, vocational training and volunteering as well as other health, social and lifestyle issues. The project will provide them with access to debt advice peer support groups, employability programmes and volunteering.

Sandra Brammall, branch manager at The Nottingham’s Firth Park branch said: ”SOAR states that its mission is to enable and support local people through partnership working, to improve the quality of life for North Sheffield residents. Here at the Nottingham we recognise the importance to the work that groups such as SOAR do in our community and because of this we are delighted to be able to support this worthy group.”

Visitors to the Learning Zone on the morning of Saturday 29th September were treated to a feast of music and dancing on Chaucer Square. The sun shone, as local dance groups strutted their stuff, along with some guest dance groups from other parts of the city. Members of the public joined in enthusiastically with a Zumba taster session run by Adele Louise, with class members from her sessions at Chaucer and Foxhill Forum. There were also performances by the Jay Love School of Dancing, AllStarz Dance, and dance students from Longley College. Guest dance groups Belrobics and the Ashay Dance Troupe brought belly dancing, salsa and bollywood to Parson Cross. There was also the chance for local people to view the new banners and sculptures destined for the Square.

Dance On! was the first event in the ‘Square Dance Project’ - an exciting programme of dance, funded by the Council, coming to Parson Cross over the next 12 months and more dance performances are planned for Chaucer Square for next spring and summer.

For more information on how to get involved or learn more about the Square Dance project email: [email protected] or call or text Project Manager, Maire McCarthy on 07941 883 276.

Work is nearing completion on 2 new health centres for North Sheffield in the Flowers and Foxhill neighbourhoods.

The Flowers Health Centre on Wincobank Avenue is due for completion at the end of November 2012 and the Foxhill Medical Centre on Foxhill Road at the beginning of January 2013. We hope to be able to invite the local community in to view each new centre soon after each of the completion/occupation dates. Please look out for the community launch dates! The construction work is being undertaken by Mansell on behalf of Community 1st Sheffield - NHS Sheffield’s local estate management partner. The new centres will provide local health and community services in their neighbourhoods. An exciting feature of these new centres is a design brief that lays importance on sustainability, not only by promoting low carbon buildings and services but also by focussing on the health and well being of their users and visitors. If you require any further information about the launch dates then please contact: Jill Lancaster, Health Improvement Practitioner for the North East Community Assembly area by email: [email protected]. The practices will accept new patients residing within their boundary.

I Come From…By Rebecca Compson

I come from tears, Silence, bottled up emotions & a fake smile.I come from Tattoo’s ink in my skin, a permanent reminder of who I believe in.I come from vest tops and joggy bottoms.I come from UB40, passed down the generation, from my dad, to me and now to you.I come from bars, gates, high prison walls, from seeing my dad every day to not seeing him at all.I come from bad memories, been left behind, been welcomed to the world then having to say bye.I come from secrets, lying and spite, thinking to myself it just needs to come out.I come from early mornings, late nights, sleep tight don’t let the bed bugs bite.I come from choosing between two parents.I come from a childhood, adulthood a rough neighbourhood.I come from two lives, I split myself in half.I come from steel, a city of white roses.I come from a corner a person who cries.I come from NEETS, a label of who I am.I come from old and new.I come from loss of hair, cancer in the brain, worries she will never be the same.I come from Blue, Brown and Green eye’s, but I never realised how time without you flies.I come from a Grave stone, another tear; I will never be the same without you here. Its never too late to live happily ever after.

Rebecca Compson is one of the learners on SOAR’s NEETs programme for 16-18 year olds.

The next project starts early Jan 2013 (TBC) at the Learning Zone, Parson Cross. For further information please call Janice on 07956 605 618 or 0114 213 4065.

‘Challenge Ian’

Parson Cross signed up for the Pedal Ready BikeBoost Challenge and it has seen some fantastic results with 23 people signing up to rediscover the joys of cycling, including staff from SOAR.

The 6 week commuting challenge (bikes and relevant equipment provided) is a great opportunity or anyone to give cycling to work a go.

Pedal Ready are on hand to show you great routes to work, cycle maintenance skills, boost your cycling skills or even teach you to ride if you’ve never ridden before.

“I love my bike! I’ve cycled to work and back for the past 3 weeks. I had forgotten how much fun it was, riding a bike and the best thing is that I’m losing weight and getting fit. I’d recommend it to anyone.” — Ruth Richards, SOAR Works Assistant Centre Administrator

For more information: www.bikeboost.org www.pedalready.co.uk

Pedal Ready’s professional and friendly cycling instructors are back in Parson Cross with free absolute beginners and wobbly returners cycling sessions!

• Fridays 10am-12pm - Learn to Ride at Parson Cross Forum (Margetson Crescent) - for adults of any age who never learned to ride or who haven’t cycled for many years.

• Fridays 1-3pm - Cycling Confidence Course from SOAR (Knutton Rd) to Colley Park and possibly local trails - for beginners or people wanting to return to cycling in an easy going supportive group.

• Bespoke Sessions - for cyclists who want to feel more confident on roads or trails - for 2 people of similar ability, families or small groups - at a time and place to suit you with your own bikes, or meet at SOAR if you need to borrow bikes.

Bikes provided, and all sessions free thanks to Sheffield Council - but places MUST be booked. Contact Pedal Ready for more info or to book: Call: 0114 241 2775 or email: [email protected]

The BikeBoost Challenge comes to SOAR and Parson CrossChallenge Period: 2nd October — 1st November

The Bike Boost Challenge became ‘Challenge Ian’, because I had not ridden a bike for over 20 years and back then I was much, much fitter!

I own a mountain bike, but rarely use it and the thought of struggling up hills, arriving at work hot and sweaty was not particularly appealing. So when I found out I could borrow an electric assist bicycle for free, I was up for it.

The day arrived to pick up my loan bike and it was a beauty and it promised 30 miles use between charges. Ideal, as my daily round trip commute was just 6 miles.

I was hooked and had forgotten how good it felt to ride a bike, taking a short cut through the park, using cycle paths, making the journey more enjoyable and it took me just five minutes longer to commute than on my motorbike.

The electric assist was great, it eliminated the concern of arriving at work hot and uncomfortable and flattened out the tough hills. I began to use the electric assist less throughout the challenge, as my fitness increased and by the time I handed the bike back I had decided to invest a little money in my mountain bike by fitting mud guards and a pannier rack, so I can continue to cycle to work.

How has this challenge changed me? I feel much more alert, arriving at work ready for the day and when I get home, any of the days stress has gone. I have started road cycling for leisure and try to get out for a ride at least once a week.

Would I recommend Bike Boost? Absolutely, give it a go there is absolutely nothing to pay and nothing to lose, with a whole new world of bikes as an alternative commuting vehicle and leisure activity if the bug really gets hold of you.

The Cabinet made their second visit to our local area to answer resident’s questions.

Cllr Harry Harpham opened the meeting by summarising the housing issues in the area and explained what the Council is doing. Questions from the local community included:

• Carriage of bicycle on the new tram-trains • Safety of pedestrians outside Tescos at Herries Road • Welfare reforms affecting benefit claimants in Sheffield • Housing issues such as supply of housing land, bringing back empty homes into use, demolition of Skinnerthorpe Road housing • Resurfacing of the roads in Shiregreen • Climate change and its impact on health and wellbeing

A group of young people from different schools and youth clubs gave a presentation at the Assembly meeting which followed. The North East Youth Forum is keen to make a positive difference within their community and has already taken part in local consultation, designed their own logo, and planned a launch event. They questioned the Councillors on road safety and engagement with young people.

Local groups have been planting their free daffodils and crocuses, provided by the Community Assembly. Green Estates helped the Brushes Busy Kids plant their bulbs in the dragon planters on Merlin Way. The Neighbourhood Environmental Action Team also helped the community plant bulbs on sites in Wincobank and on Kyle and Emmerson Crescent with Lindsay TARA.

The Community Involvement Plan 2012/3 was adopted by Councillors as a basis for involving local residents across the area in the work of the North East Community Assembly and other local issues over the next twelve months.

The Consultation Vehicle was booked out for 22 days in the last financial year raising an income of over £6000. This year there is also plenty of interest – it was even in the prime spot for Fright Night and a provisional booking has been made for the next year’s event!

All the reports and presentations from these meetings can be viewed on the NECA blog and website.

Community Plan 2013These are the priorities that the North East Community Assembly has identified for the area in consultation with the community:

• Clean, tidy, greener ‘streets to be proud of’ • Improved Parks and open spaces • Community support and people getting on together • More things for children and young people to do • Neighbourhoods where people feel safe • Improved roads and transport

• Improved housing and the built environment • Reducing health inequalities ‘adding years to life and life to years’ • Getting people into work and out of poverty • Raising educational attainment, aspiration, and reducing school exclusions

Thinking of these priorities are there any issues in your area you would like to tell us about?

Have you got any good ideas that would help us to deal with these issues?

Please tell us your answers and include your post code and road or complete this simple survey — http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KXQKSS9. We do really appreciate your help and support.

Be Cancer Aware It might make all the difference

Symptoms anywhere on your body: • Women: An unusual lump or swelling (including breast, neck, armpit, groin or abdomen) • Men: An unusual lump or swelling (including neck, armpit, abdomen, groin, testicle or breast area) • A change in the size, shape and colour of a mole • A sore that won’t heal after several weeks • Unexplained weight loss or heavy night sweats • Unexplained pain or ache that lasts longer than 4 weeks

Symptoms in specific places of the body: • A mouth or tongue ulcer that lasts longer than 3 weeks • A cough or croaky voice that lasts longer than 3 weeks • Persistent difficulty swallowing or indigestion • Blood in your bowel motions • A change to more frequent and looser bowel motions that last longer than 4-6 weeks • Blood in your urine • Problems passing urine

Cancer is still a taboo illness for many and there is a lot of fear surrounding the disease. But the fact is: the earlier you are treated the much better your chance of making a full recovery.

Anyone of any age can get cancer, but your risk increases with age. For example, 9 out of 10 cases of cancer are found in people aged over 50. Lung, breast, bowel, and prostate are the four most common cancers.

The Good News More and more people are surviving cancer due to better treatment. But it is vital that people don’t ignore symptoms and that they seek treatment early. For example, 9 out of 10 people diagnosed with bowel cancer at the early stage make a good recovery and live for many more years.

Know the Warning Signs Be aware of the early warning signs for cancer and don’t delay, get them checked out by your doctor. If you are not happy with your GP’s response, ask for another opinion. Cancer is easier to treat and cure if diagnosed early. Remember, however, that the cancer symptoms shown below can often be due to other, much less serious illnesses. So if you spot something unusual, it doesn’t mean that you’ve definitely got cancer.

Cancer Screening There are three national cancer screening programmes designed to detect cancer in its very early stages:

1. Bowel Screening Both men and women aged 60 to 74 receive a home screening kit through the post every two years (so long as you are registered with a GP). If you’ve lost your screening kit, you can call the helpline number to request another. If you are 75 or over you can still do a test – simply call the Bowel Screening helpline on 0800 707 6060 and ask for a kit to be sent to you.

2. Breast Screening All women aged 50-70 are invited every 3 years for screening. If you have missed your appointment, you can request another by telephoning the screening service.Women over 70 can still take part in screening but have to make their own appointment by calling the Sheffield Breast Screening service on 0114 271 1920.

3. Cervical Screening (Smear Tests) Women between 25 and 64 are invited for screening; (every 3 years for women aged 25-49 and every 5 years for those aged 50 and over). Provided they have regularly taken part in screening, women aged over 64 have very little risk of developing cervical cancer.

Make an appointment today at your local GP surgery if you are due for your test and tell your friends to. Smear tests can pick up cell changes long before cancer even develops so you can avoid getting cancer altogether.

Reduce your Risk of Cancer There is a lot you can do to reduce your risk of getting cancer: • Maintain a healthy balanced diet and weight • Keep as active as you can • Moderate your alcohol intake and • If you smoke, STOP. Stopping Smoking is the single biggest thing you can do to reduce your risk.

Cancer Awareness Project at SOAR SOAR are working with local GP practices and local communities to raise public awareness of cancer signs and symptoms and the importance of seeking help early. This work is led by Chris McCartney and she will be talking to groups, visiting GP practices to talk to patients and staff, and making sure that there is plenty of information around the area.

To find out more, contact Chris on 0114 213 4065 or email [email protected]

Health and Wellbeing This page is funded by NHS Sheffield as part of the Healthy Communities Programme

The project runs a wide range of groups and workshops in 5 different Healthy Community programme areas across Sheffield. The activities include: anger management, healthy lifestyle, emotional wellbeing, beating stress and anxiety, exercise and mental wellbeing, women’s wellbeing, Zumba, and Tai Chi.

“Attending the course has made me determined to take up more exercise by walking rather than getting in the car.”The courses set out to help people make the link between physical and mental wellbeing. Some activities are more focused around physical activity, such as Zumba and Tai Chi, and these can be effective in engaging with people who would not otherwise attend activities around mental health. The course leaders facilitate informal discussions about how physical wellbeing can improve mental wellbeing, and help participants identify changes they can make to live healthier lives. Other activities concentrate directly on mental health but usually include a practical element, such as cook and eat sessions.

“I never realised how unhealthy my diet was until I attended the workshop. I have also learnt how to cook healthy meals at home for me and the family.”All activities are held in community venues, often in partnership with other organisations. A free crèche is provided for many of the activities.

“I am constantly trying to make healthier choices; I no longer think about going on a diet. I am more aware of what foods I eat and the impact my food has on the way I feel.”People have also told us about other benefits of taking part in the activities, such as giving them a reason to leave the house, making new friends and getting to know their community.

“I no longer feel isolated. I used I used to think that I was the only person who experienced the feelings I had. Through the exercises we did, I learned to think more positively about myself... I can deal with feelings of low self esteem much better.”For more information or to request a programme, please email [email protected] or phone us on 0114 258 4489.

PX Story is work of fiction inspired by Parson Cross (stories heard, situations seen, found objects, collected pictures) and collated by Ania Bas, artist in residence in Parson Cross in 2012.

Commissioned by Yorkshire Artspace and funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Arts Council England

This is just the start of the Parson X Exchange; the scrapbook brings together some ideas for linking local shops, a way of exchanging skills or a place to get in touch with things going on in the neighbourhood. You will find a copy of the scrapbook in the Learning Zone and in SOAR Works. They are filled with ideas and drawings, opinions and comments to provoke dialogue across the community. Some of the ideas may be taken up by SOAR, others offer opportunities for the community to organise themselves. This is your chance to grab hold of these ideas, twist and turn them, make links and contacts and get involved in the neighbourhood.

There is loads of space for your comments and drawings in the scrapbooks: speech bubbles, ‘like’ stickers, pens, paper and doodles allow everyone to add and explore even more ideas. This is just the beginning of the exchange.

Parson X Exchange: A Scrapbook of Ideas for the Neighbourhood

What could SOAR Works offer the community? How can it and the Learning Zone engage more in the local area?

In September SOAR initiated a Live Project with Sheffield University School of Architecture, to ask ‘where are we now?’ and in conjunction with Yorkshire Artspace explore the future potential of two new buildings in Parson Cross: the Learning Zone and SOAR Works.

Out of the Live Project, Parson X Exchange has been set up as a community network for exchanging ideas, aspirations and dreams for the continued regeneration of Parson Cross. It explores ideas for SOAR Works, the Learning Zone and the Parson Cross community through a collaborative scrapbook. All the ideas and proposals so far have been generated among local community groups developed through dialogue and presented on facebook and at the Parson X Exchange in SOAR Works.

Grow Sheffield’s Abundance initiative is a volunteer run, Sheffield-based project, which helps communities to harvest the seasonal glut of unwanted and unpicked fruit in their area. The excess fruit is then re-distributed amongst the local community on a not-for-profit basis. Abundance also aims to reconnect communities with their local food resources and to provide skills, training and practical advice in order to utilise and develop these for the benefit of everyone.

We’re looking for someone to coordinate Abundance activities in the S5 region, building on two years of Abundancing in the area, working closely with LEAF community allotment and the PXI Food Bank at Mt Tabor Methodist Church to develop the network that has already been established.

As part of Grow Sheffield’s volunteer programme you’ll have access to regular training opportunities and have the chance to develop skills working alongside experienced, like-minded people. Please contact Tom Sutton at [email protected] for more information.

The Abundance project is managed by Grow Sheffield:

Daniele Rinaudo, Abundance Project Leader, said:

“There’s just so much fruit in Sheffield! Most of it is in peoples’ back gardens and they just can’t use it all. Just yesterday we spoke to a lady in Greenhill who has 3 apple trees in her garden and if we hadn’t knocked on her door she would have had to just throw the fruit into the bin because she doesn’t know what to do with it. We’ll pick the fruit and then share it within the community through various distribution points. We don’t assume ‘ownership’ of the fruit so this is all done free of charge. We believe trees like these are a community resource that local people should get the benefit of.”
