DISSERTATION PROJECT

1. Project Title -

5S implementation at the Toybank’s Storehouse

2. Need & Significance :

About Toybank:

Toybank is a Non-profit organization that has been setup with the aim of providing toys to poor children. The toy shapes the psyche of the children, so utmost care is taken to give only unbiased and morally correct toys to children.

As of now, toys are collected, segregated and gift-wrapped and then gifted on a one-on-one basis to the kids from all over Mumbai.

What is 5S? 5S is the name of a workplace organization methodology that uses a list of five Japanese words which are seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke. The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. In short:1) Sort (Seiri): Eliminate all unnecessary tools, parts, and instructions.2) Set In order (Seiton): There should be a place for everything and everything should

be in its place.3) Shine (Seiso): Clean the workspace and all equipment, and keep it clean, tidy and

organized.4) Standardizing (Seiketsu): To make sure first 3 S are always implemented5) Sustain (Shitsuke): To make habit of properly maintaining correct procedures

Need & Significance of 5S: 1) As of now toys collected are not sorted and are lying on the floor in unsorted condition.

So, these toys need to be sorted so that identification of toys will be easy.2) There is lot of junk material (toys in bad condition) present is store house which needs to

be removed from storing area. 3) There is no space allocation for each type of toy.4) There is no proper utilization of Space in the Storehouse. Because of messy storage of

toys there is no free space to navigate in the store area. 5) Volunteers and Toybanker’s find it difficult to find right type of toys while packing them

for distribution drives.

To have an idea, pictures showing current state of store house are shown:
