Advanced Math in 5th Grade● Advanced math in 5th grade is very different from advanced in 4th.

● At the end of the year, students in advanced math will take the 6th grade SOL

instead of the 5th grade test.

● Being in advanced math in 4th grade does not guarantee placement into advanced

math. Placement is based on several criteria. Advanced math is very challenging for

students and is not recommended for students who do not genuinely enjoy math

and being challenged. Students who are struggling in 6th grade math will be placed

back into 5th grade math with extensions.

● All students will have access to extensions throughout the year!

Communication● If you know your child will be absent, please let us know.

● Please e-mail your student’s teacher, as well as calling or e-mailing Dee

Cunningham, and Valerie Mooreshead for any early pick ups, changes in dismissal or

absences so we can plan accordingly

● Thursday folders will contain fliers from PTA, information about special events, and

graded work. They need to be returned on Fridays. Student's responsibility

● Parent teacher conferences - before the end of second quarter

assigning homework in other content areas

GradesStudents are graded on their academic achievement, their effort, and their behavior.

4 – Exceeds grade level expectations

3 – Consistently meets grade level expectations

2 – Inconsistently meets grade level expectations

1 – Does not meet grade level expectations

The numbers do not correspond to the letter grades you will encounter in middle school.

A student receiving all 3’s is doing exactly what we would expect from them as a 5th

grade student!

SOL’s5th graders take three SOL tests – reading, math and science. Our science SOL is cumulative covering topics from 3rd-5th grade and tends to be one of the more challenging. Throughout the year students will bring home SOL review packets covering material from previous grade levels.

Field Trips/Classroom VisitsWe will have our first field trip to Green Springs on October

20th as part of our science landforms unit. We will need parent chaperones!

We will need a room parent volunteer(s) willing to be our middle-man with the PTA and help plan class parties and facilitate our participation with PTA events.

If you would like to visit or volunteer in other ways, please email me.

BirthdaysIf your child has something to celebrate or be excited about – let me know! It helps us foster our sense of community. If there is a birthday and you would like to bring a treat, please do so at our lunch time. If your child has an allergy, please speak with me about storing some allergy friendly treats in the room so they never have to feel left out!

We have been asked to keep birthday invitations out of school, even if the whole class is invited.

Cell Phones and TabletsWe strongly prefer that students do not bring cell phones to school (they won’t have any

reception anyway!). If your child MUST have a phone with them, it needs to be

completely off and in their backpack all day - including dismissal.

If your child wants to bring in a tablet or e-reader for independent reading, a BYOD

agreement needs to be filled out, please email your classroom teacher for more

information.
