Thirty of the vest worn into combat wer·e hit by fragments of enemy shells and enemy ullets yet none of the men wearing the vests wera·woundad in arq spot protected by the vest. One man was hit on the vest at a~ost point blank range with a oullet from a PPsH gun L~d was not wo~~ded. Some modification should be made in either the cartridge belt or the vest so that they could be worn comfortably together. Perhaps pockets might be made in the vest to carry ammunition or a bandalesr designed to replQce the cartridge belt.

The nylon material used in making the vests has a shiny finish which makes it easy for the enemy to detect the wearer·,

It is suggested that the vests be d6signed so as to protect the kidneys and the lower abdomen,

One vary large coy reoei ved a chest wound which might have been avoided if a vest large enough for· him to wear had been available. Several other manssaid they discarded their vests in battle because they were unable to throw grenades when wearing the vest.

The mount was made from a rod from a l05MM Howitzer ammunition box and a log about four inches in di~eter and six feet long. T11e rod was cold bent to sr~pe in tha tr-un1on hole or a machine gun and buried in the earth to the mount a firm foundation. The ~~ was then secured to the rod by the wing nut which comes with the rod. (see diagram on the following page),

Although designed primarily for the A-4 and the A-6, a heavy machine gun can be mounted on this field expedient. The primary advantage of this mount other than its obtainability is the large cone of dispersion m11oh results from vibration of the rod and timber. No attachment has been devised to secure ·the L~-Xnition box to the mount. !t !s suggested that the assistant gunner hold the ammunition and move with the 2Un. A circular emPlacement a out six feet in diameter is recommended for this type mount. (see following page).
