5th Sunday of Easter
"Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do." What were the works that Jesus did? Miracles, sometimes,
but what were the essence of these miracles? Caring for the sick, comforting the sorrowful, feeding the hungry...
much of Jesus' ministry was spent in carrying out what we call the works of mercy. But he did more than that; he
also preached and publicly shared the good news, he fostered fellowship and community, and he prayed. All of
this makes a kind of plan of action for us as Christians. As Jesus says today, if we truly believe in him, we will
follow in his footsteps and do these same things.
What this all suggests is that belief itself--having faith, being Christian--is only part of the picture. Jesus expects
us to take this faith and put it into concrete, practical action. Apparently this goes hand in hand with real faith. If
actions don't follow, then faith is not being lived to its fullest.
This of course presents a real challenge. Our lives are busy and our plates are full, just with the tasks and demands
of daily existence. It can seem like a burden to serve others, to share the
Gospel, to be actively involved in a faith community, to find time to pray.
But these are meant to be priorities for true disciples of Christ. And as many
will testify, when we sincerely ask God to help us get our priorities in order,
he has a way of miraculously multiplying our time. Somehow, we find the
opportunities right before us to follow God's will and bring our faith to life.
That simple prayer of asking for help may be where we need to start. The
first step is not so much to fill our calendar as to fill our hearts, or just to
pray that God will fill our hearts, with the desire to "do the works" of Jesus.

Mother's Day Blessing
The Synod on the Family was last October, and we now wait for Pope Francis to release his statement on what to do to strengthen the family in the twenty-first century. Many say that the family is under attack and we need to focus more intently on family values. One thing we may all agree on is the centrality of the figure of the mother in all families. It is that primary and central role of mother that draws family together. The mother is the glue that binds all families together. As we celebrate the tradition of Mother's Day, let us pray for our mothers, both living and deceased.
Let us pray...
Good and gracious God, creator of all good things in the universe, your Son, Jesus Christ, loved his Mother and modeled for us how we should love our mothers.
Bless all the women in our lives who model for us the love of a mother. Protect them and encourage them to love as you have loved us.
Bless and protect those men in families who have no female partners and give them courage and strength to love their children in the absence of a mother.
We ask all this in your name. Amen.

NEW EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
TRAINING
A training session for anyone interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister is set for Thursday, June 1st from 7:00—8:30 PM in the church building. This session is required for all who distribute the Eucharist at Mass and to the homebound or hospitalized on a regular basis. The Church requires that Ministers of Eucharist be fully Initiated (have received Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) and in good standing with the Catholic Church. The Archdiocese of Chicago strongly recommends that ministers be at least 16 years old; we maintain this policy at St. Hubert. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY OF INITIATION
RITE OF WELCOME 2017
May 21 at the 9:00 AM Mass
Over the past several months, a number of children with their families have become a part of Children’s Ministry of Initiation (CMI). On Sunday, May 21 at the 9:00 AM Mass Anthony and Alexia Trejo, who are unbaptized, will make public their intention to the Church that they want to be a fully-initiated members of the Catholic faith. In celebrating this Rite of Welcoming, from this point on, they will be called a catechumens.
Five children in CMI are baptized Catholics and they are preparing for the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. They are Alex Christian, Michael Chudzik, Dustin Pasia, Jaikimo Plaza, and Sebastian Reivera. They will make public their intention to continue sacramental preparation in CMI. From this point on these children, who are already baptized, will be called candidates.
If you have an unbaptized child over the age of seven, or an uncatechized child over the age of 8 who is interested in receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, please contact Marie Staffa at

As part of our mission, the entire community is called upon to welcome and support these children in their formation and discernment. It will be our duty to pray for them and with them throughout the year in the liturgy — especially in the Rite of Sending for Election and Continuing Conversion, in the
early spring of 2018, and during the Rites of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil in 2018. We will be asked to help them learn about our faith in the traditions of our Church. Thanks for joining us in prayer as they make this important step on their journey of faith.

Memorial Blood Drive St. Hubert is sponsoring the 8th Annual Gayle Photikarm Memorial Blood Drive on Sunday, June 4, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the lower level of the church.
Gayle had a kind heart and a warm, giving spirit. She was a loving wife, devoted mother of two sons, and a
special, understanding teacher at St. Hubert School.
Gayle received multiple transfusions during her battle with cancer. It is in Gayle's memory that her family and friends ask you to join them in saving lives by donating blood.

Spain and France 2018
There will be a pilgrimage going to Spain and France next year, co-hosted by parish member Joseph Marco, Chaplain/Coordinator of Catholic Ministry at Northwest Community Hospital, and Fr. Allen Bratkowski, Pastor of St. Edward and St. Richard Parishes in Racine, WI. The dates are April 9 to 20, 2018 departing from O’Hare International Airport. The tour includes Barcelona and Zaragoza, Spain and then Lourdes, Carcassonne, Avignon and Nice, France. Daniel Berrigan was once asked: “Where does your faith
reside, where’s its real seat?” His answer is wonderful,
both in color and insight: “Your faith is rarely where your
head is at and rarely where your heart is at. Your faith is
where your ass is at! Inside what commitments are you
sitting? Within what reality do you anchor yourself?”
Faith, in his view, is not anchored in the head or the heart.
But how is that possible? If it isn’t in the head or the
heart, where is it?
From Aristotle, through Thomas Aquinas, through
contemporary philosophy and psychology, analysts have
generally agreed that, as human beings, we have three
major spiritual faculties: HEAD, HEART, and GUT, each
with a special function. In our heads, we think. In our
hearts, we feel. What happens in the gut? In the gut, we
know, just simply know, in a way beyond thoughts and
feelings. The gut has to do with intuition, it lets us know
what we “have to do”. It’s there that we experience the
categorical imperatives within our lives.
With that as a background, we can begin to understand
the wisdom of Berrigan’s answer: To use just one
example: There are times when each of us in the most
important commitments within our lives (faith, family,
church, morality) find ourselves in a situation where our
heads aren’t in it, our hearts aren’t in it, but we are in it!
Against the more spontaneous wisdom of our heads and
against the more natural feelings of our hearts, we are
anchored by another kind of thought and feeling which
perhaps we can’t explain to anyone, even to ourselves,
but which keeps us sitting, standing, and walking solidly
inside of a certain commitment. We are doing what “we
have to do” because at some deep level we simply
“know” that this is what we need to do, that this is what is
right. That’s faith.
Faith is manifest in our decisions, our commitments, and
our life-choices, more than in any intellectual beliefs or
passionate feelings. It shows itself in decisions, in
choosing certain commitments and in remaining within
them. It’s helpful to know this.
How do I know whether my faith is weak or strong? By
checking where my ass is at! Why am I inside certain
commitments? Why am I remaining there? That,
ultimately, is the criterion. The same holds true for
assessment of others’ faith. What’s to be said of those
among our own children, siblings, neighbors, and friends,
who no longer go to church and seem, on the surface at
least, to be rather cavalier about the faith?
How we assess their faith may not be based upon where
their heads and hearts are at, but rather upon where they
are at. Do they radiate charity, graciousness, respect,
hospitality, honesty, generosity, moral integrity, concern
for justice? To what are they giving their lives? What
commitments are they sitting and walking within and
why? Faith is judged by these things, not only by how
someone thinks, feels, or expresses herself explicitly in
the area of faith.
God, as Jesus makes clear, is a self-emptying God, and
we live in the wonder and grace of that kenosis. God, it
seems, is self-secure enough so as to not need to be
always the centre of conscious attention, the
acknowledged life of the party.
We see then that there is a real difference between the
idea of faith and its reality. Too often we confuse these.
Faith is also an idea and that idea can sometimes be very
stimulating intellectually. As well, the idea of faith can
stir and inflame the heart. The reverse is also true. As a
notion, faith can sometimes seem intellectually stifling
and can feel emotionally crippling. Feelings and thoughts
run a wide gamut and so we must be careful to not
mistake how we think and feel about God on any given
day for the reality of faith. Thoughts and feelings about
God are not necessarily faith, as we all-too-quickly learn
when our faith is challenged; either by the distractions of
everyday life, the scandals in the church, or, more deeply,
by personal tragedy, when we are cut down at our roots
by terminal illness, the loss of health through aging, and
other irreversible losses. It’s then that we find out, only
too quickly, that the idea of faith, as distinct from the
reality of faith, lacks the substance to truly let us believe
in a deeper life than what the world can give us now.
C.S. Lewis, in recounting his own journey to faith, tells
us that it was not, in the end, his thoughts or feelings that
led him to faith. Rather it was God’s grip on him, an
inchoate brand in his soul that wouldn’t go away, a
nagging burn in his gut. As he puts it: “The harshness of
God is softer than the kindness of men and God’s
compulsion is our liberation.”

BAPTISMS To register for Baptism, stop in or call the Parish Office. Parents must attend a Baptismal Preparation Meeting, which is held on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM. You may attend this parent meeting either before or after the baby is born.
Baptisms take place on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 1:30 PM or at Mass by arrangement. You will confirm the date for Baptism by attending the Baptism Preparation Meeting.
MARRIAGES Please do not reserve your banquet hall before confirming the date with the church. Set your date by calling the Parish Office as early as possible as you plan your wedding—at least 6 months before the wedding. Weddings take place on Saturdays at 2:00 PM. Weekdays and Sundays must be arranged individually.
RECONCILIATION Saturday after 4:30 PM Mass, or by appointment.
EUCHARIST FOR THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND
