Introduction
My name is Tammy Trayer. I am an author, writer, radioshow host at Mountain Woman Radio, blogger atTrayerWilderness.com and educator atTrayerWildernessAcademy.com.
My family and I embraced our off-grid, homesteading lifein 2010. We lived in a canvas wall tent on raw wildernessland in northern Idaho for 8 1/2 months while we built ourhome and homestead. We are 100% solar and love a life ofpreparedness and teach the traditional, primitive andwilderness survival skills that we use on our YouTubechannel as well as at TrayerWildernessAcademy.com.

I'd like to share my views on preparedness and what I feelis most important in today's class.
Before we dive into the 5 steps, I would like to share a littletestimony as to why preparedness is important. Rememberthe unexpected will always happen - whether it is a naturaldisaster, a man-made disaster, something breaks on thehomestead or even sickness or illness may set in, things willhappen and usually when you least expect them.
Over the last 5 years, for unknown reasons, my healthbegan to decline. October of 2015, after helping my sondeliver 4 cords of Firewood I ended up with neuropathy inboth my legs and arms. I was unable to pick up a canningjar that was a 1/4 full of oatmeal when I was previously lifting85 lbs on my weight bench. It wasn't long before it wasrevealed to us what was causing my illness (you can find outmore at TrayerWilderness.com/ourhealthjourney). Januaryof 2016 I had life saving surgery which took us to GA fornearly 20 days and because I ended up flat on my back fromJan to June my husband's and son's life changed to takingcare of me. We went 6 1/2 months without an income on ourhomestead with $9.99 in our checking account and veryblessed with a rather large food cache and a full wood shedbecause those were two areas of our focus on our homestead.Had we not focused on preparedness we would have had toforage and harvest from the wild, but because our mainfocuses were a full pantry & wood shed we breezed through avery rough time.
So I can't express enough to start incorporatingpreparedness into your life.

5 Ways To Cultivate A PreparednessMindset
1. First and foremost it is extremely important thatpreparedness is a heart thing and a lifestyle choice vssomething you view as a whim or a temporary time ofaccumulating things!
2. When you learn to do something each day to helpincrease your level of preparedness for tomorrow youare creating a lifestyle of preparedness. Thinking out ofthe box helps in this area and elongating your thinking.A simple example of preparedness is having an electriccan opener along with a manual can opener. If you losepower for days and all you have is canned food to eatand you don't have a manual can opener things willbecome much more complicated than it needs to be.Food is another area that should be well thought out. Imake everything from scratch including buying spices tobe able to make my own chili powder, season salts, etc.Our location warrants stocking up heavily in August onall our food needs for the winter months and into thethaw of spring to be sure that we have enough flours, sugars, rice, legumes, etc. We harvest our meats from thewild during hunting season. We always consider whatwe would do if our nations food supply would no longerbe available. Just suppose that something were tohappen to our food supply as we know it and grocery

stores would not be available - having seeds available toplant your own food and knowing how to garden, can, preserve and ferment food along with harvesting, butchering and even preserving your meats areimportant traditional skills that we recommend everyoneto know. This was what I meant when saying that youneed to think out of the box and you need to follow thethought process passed modern conveniences.
3. Everything on our homestead is based around our faithand our budget. God plays a very important role in ourhome and he leads the way. We also feel thateverything you do on the homestead should be focusedaround your budget. The biggest part of preparednessis staying out of debt or lowering your debt. I feel it isvery important for every family to read The Total MoneyMakeover By Dave Ramsey. His process is sound and heoffers worksheets to keep yourself in check. I feel theworksheets are very good, but they did not work for meas well as I would have liked as my needs are different. We us YNAB (You Need A Budget) which works verywell for us which you can find by going toTrayerWilderness.com/ynab.
4. A To Do or Preparedness list is important. Keepingtrack of the things you want to attain or do is importantto help keep things organized and prioritized.Additionally, this is another area that your budgetshould be a consideration. Each item on your To Do orPreparedness list should have a value recorded so you

know how to work that into your budget. Doing thingsas you can afford to is important.
5. No matter where and how you live, everyone should trytheir best to be prepared. Dependent on how & wherewe live, we all have different things to be prepared forand often times different needs, but the categories aretypically the same food, water, shelter and heat arealways the first things to consider. I'd like to give youan example: if the power were to go out in your houseright now and it would be out for 3 days - what are somethings you are going to need: Water (drinking, toiletsand hygiene) food, a possible means of heating yourfood (such as gas grill, gas camp stove (do you haveextra propane), auxiliary heat, lighting - lanterns, headlamps. Now just to test you - along this thoughtprocess did you think out of the box and consider extralamp fluid or batteries for your lighting?
