Lafarge FrescoLafarge Fresco raised panelwallboards allow the traditionalappearance of panelled walls andceilings to be achieved economicallywith normal drylining techniques.

Lafarge Fresco panels can beinstalled on timber or Cormet metalframing in a similar way to standardplasterboard. They can also be directbonded to sound, dry backgrounds.

Lafarge CoveLafarge Cove is a simple and costeffective way of adding attractiveand distinctive features to the walland ceiling junction. Designed forinternal use Lafarge Cove cancomplement many room styles.

Lafarge ProfilesThe Lafarge Profile range ofarchitectural design products allowsfeatures once only possible with wetplaster and costly one-offcomponents to be achieved quicklyand economically.

The Lafarge Profiles range enablesthe designer to use plasterboard innew and more imaginative ways.

Lafarge Shadowline Profiles providemany opportunities for theintroduction of relief andarticulation to wall and ceilingsurfaces.

A softer approach is possible withLafarge Softform Profiles to createsmooth curves.

Contour WallsCurved wall surfaces, which oncerequired time-consuming wetplaster technology or expensivefibrous plaster mouldings, can nowbe formed with quick andinexpensive Lafarge drywall systems.Utilising the drywall advantage it isnow possible to create high qualitycurved plaster forms with standardwallboards and at the same timemeet tight time and cost restraints.

Setting out and planning

Careful planning at setting outstage can result in savings in bothtime and materials duringinstallation.

Except where the panelling is to beinstalled in simple rectangular areaswith no interruptions, it isrecommended that a detaileddimensioned layout is prepared foreach installation.

Wall layouts

Wherever possible, the location offeatures such as doors, windows, radiators etc. should be planned tosuit the setting out of the LafargeFresco panels. Fixtures, and itemssuch as electrical socket outlets, switches, television and telephoneoutlets should be positioned to fallwithin the flat surfaces of thepanels.

Where openings cannot be plannedto suit the module of the LafargeFresco panels, spacer pieces will berequired at ends of runs. Therecessed edge of Lafarge Frescopanels allows them to be jointedwith tapered edge 15mm LafargeFirecheck wallboard.

Set out framing at 400mm centres,or where direct bonded apply dabsof Lafarge Bonding Compound invertical rows at 400mm centres.

Cutting

Always support the boards toprevent flexing. Lafarge Frescoshould be cut with a fine-toothedsaw, alternatively use a sharp knifeto deeply score the face, gentlybreak the board from the back andcut the other liner. Do not cut acrossthe sculptured panels. Keep cuts atleast 25mm from the sculpturedpanel edges.

Fixings to timber/Cormet MetalFraming

Use appropriate Lafarge Screws forfixing.

Screw lengths are given in table 6.7.

Screw position

• at least 10mm in from paperbound edges of the boards

• within the flat surfaces of thesculptured panels, at least 25mmin from the pattern edges

• at least 13mm in from any cutedges of the boards

Screw spacing

• 230mm centres on ceilings and150mm centres around ceilingperimeters and cut ends of board

• 300mm centres on walls andpartitions

Spot screw heads with jointingcompounds to provide a flushsurface.

Alternatively Lafarge Fresco panelsmay be installed by direct bondingwith Lafarge Bonding Compound.

Refer to page 30 for recommendations and limitations.

Jointing

The unique recessed edge of LafargeFresco enables the panels to bejointed using similar techniques totapered edge plasterboards.

Finishing

Finish the installed panels withLafarge Universal Sealer or LafargeDrywall Sealer and as normal withemulsion paint. Spray paintingproduces the best appearance. Paintmay also be applied to the flat areasof the boards with a very finetextured roller, and to thesculptured areas with a brush.

Repairs

If localised damage to thesculptured panels should occur, repair using ornamental plastertechniques. Flat areas may berepaired in the normal way.

Stairwall Layouts

Planning

As for regular Lafarge Frescopanels, planning prior to installationis critical. For best results, includethe landing and hall in the stairlayout diagram.

• Measure the horizontal length ofthe staircase (A).

• Divide this length by 400mm togive the number of panelsrequired.

• For example A = 2500mm ÷ 400 =6 with 100mm left over. Panellingwill therefore start 50mm frombottom edge.

• Position panels as on the drawing.

• Plan hall and landing as forregular Fresco.

Panels should be cut to the stairangle (maximum 42º) passing nocloser than 40mm to the mouldedpattern, at top and bottom.

For lower angle stairs this distancemay be increased as taste dictates.

It may be preferable to place alarger filler piece at the end of thehall and landing to ensure smoothflow of panelling up the stairs.

Installation

Install panels as for regular Fresco, butting to the string of the stairs.

Alternatively Lafarge Fresco panelsmay be direct bonded to theexisting wall using Lafarge DrywallAdhesive. Secure with 60mmLafarge Nailable Plugs into masonrybackgrounds.

Ceiling layouts

Where the ceiling includes recessedor surface mounted lighting fittingsthey should be positioned in thecentres of raised panels, borders orspacer pieces.

In planning ceiling layouts use amodule of 400mm for FrescoStandard and 600mm for FrescoGrand.

Rectangular Rooms: If the overallceiling dimensions are multiples of1200mm, the entire ceiling may becovered with uncut butt-jointedboards.

If the overall ceiling dimensions aremultiples of 400mm (600mm), theceiling should be made up of fullboards plus a perimeter surround ofuniform width, made up from 15mmtaper edge Lafarge Firecheckwallboard.

Rectangular Rooms, non-modular:Prepare a dimensioned layout. Makeup perimeter areas as necessary withfiller pieces of 15mm taper edgeLafarge Firecheck wallboard makingthe border widths as uniform aspossible.

Set out framing at 400mm (300 for600mm module) centres. Provideadditional framing as required.

Handling and storage

These products require more care inhandling than Standard wallboard.Packs as delivered should be storedflat and not opened until thedetailed instruction sheet providedwith each pack has been readcarefully. Introduction

Lafarge ProfilesThe Lafarge Profile range ofarchitectural design products allowsfeatures once only possible with wet plaster and costly one-offcomponents to be achieved quicklyand economically.

The Lafarge Profile range enablesthe designer to use plasterboard innew and more imaginative ways, and to create interesting andpleasant living and workingenvironments whilst meetingmodern requirements for use ofspace and performance.

Lafarge Profiles offer two powerfuldesign solutions:

Shadowline and Softform

Lafarge Shadowline Profiles providemany opportunities for theintroduction of relief andarticulation to wall and ceilingsurfaces: expressed joints, reveals, accented junctions, recessedpanelling and stepped cornices, architraves and mouldings.

A softer approach is possible withLafarge Shadowline Profile to createsmooth curves at intersecting planes, corners, door surrounds, partitionjunctions and bullnose ends.

The Lafarge Profiles Uplighter rangeof fittings incorporate the steppedand rounded corner details of theShadowline and Softform profilesrespectively

Performance

Fire protection

Where fire resistance is required, anadditional layer of Lafarge wallboardmust be added to the basic fire-resisting partition to accommodatethe Lafarge Profile. Installations usingLafarge Profiles will maintain theClass 0 flame spread rating ofLafarge plasterboard.

Sound insulation

The acoustic performance of apartition may be compromised byusing Lafarge Profiles. To maintainacoustic performance an additionallayer of Lafarge wallboard must beadded to the basic sound resistingpartition to accommodate theLafarge Profiles.

Composition

All Lafarge Profiles are producedfrom high-strength dimensionallyprecise aluminium alloy extrusions. They are finished with a corrosion-resistant high-porosity primer whichis compatible with most materialscommonly in use in commercial anddomestic interiors, such as vinylemulsion paints and wallcoveringadhesives etc.

Shapes, sizes

All Profiles are supplied in lengths of3000mm. The full range of sectionsis shown on the following pages.

Softform ProfilesWithin the Lafarge range aresmoothly flowing profiles forcorners and bullnoses. They are aneconomical design solution forinherently safer and stronger cornertreatments.

Lafarge Softform Profiles are astylish solution to corner protectionin high traffic areas. The aluminiumalloy extrusion resists impacts betterthan conventional cornertreatments, and allows cornerprotection to be built-in to the wall,so removing the need for unsightlyexternally-applied protection.

Softform Corners

Lafarge Profile Softform Cornersallow partitions and wall linings tobe constructed with smooth curvedcorners. Both internal and external90º corners can be formed, and therobust Profile sections do notrequire any additional impactprotection.

In a 30 minute fire resistingpartition, the fire resistance can bemaintained at the curved corners bythe method shown.

Similarly, 60 minute fire resistancecan be maintained using anadditional layer of plasterboard, asshown.

Lafarge Profile Softform Corners canalso be used in many other wayswhere such smooth curved shapesare preferred, for example to createa recessed frame.

Installation

Storage

Keep materials secure, covered andaway from sources of potentialdamage, such as high traffic areas.Store on a flat surface. Verticalstorage can cause end damage andwarping.

Installation

Lafarge Profiles can be used in walls, partitions and ceilings. They aredesigned for use with single ordouble layers of plasterboard ontimber, Cormet steel studwork, orwith Cormet metal furring channels.

Lafarge Profiles require no specialtechniques, however, considerationof their location during setting outwill reduce wastage, minimise thecutting, and enable the position ofany additional framing required tosupport the Profiles to bedetermined.

Framing centres must not exceed600mm. Additional support fromextra studs or fixing channel shouldbe provided at profile joint. Alwaysfully support cut edges ofplasterboards. A double layer ofdrylining will give greater rigidity.

Fixing

Install framing etc as required, andapply plasterboards. Referenceshould be made to BS 8212: 1995Code of practice for drylining andpartitioning using gypsumplasterboard.

For the Softform Bullnose, finish theplasterboard flush with the line ofthe stud.

For other Lafarge Profiles ensurethat the Cormet metal framesupports the profile fixing fins.

Always use a drop saw (fixed powersaw) or fine toothed hand saw withmetal cutting blade to cut LafargeProfiles. Lengths of profiles areusually butt jointed. Accuracy withcuts and mitres will ensure crispjointing. Alternatively, a smoothjoint can be achieved with SoftformProfiles by filing bevels on the cutends to form a shallow v-joint; fillwith fibreglass body putty and sandsmooth.

Test fit Lafarge Profiles, and screw-fix into the framing at all profilejoints and along their entire lengthwhere they cross studs or wherethey lie along the line of theframing, at 150mm centres.

Finishing

Once all Lafarge Profiles have beenfixed, bed jointing tape withLafarge Fast Set jointing compoundalong the fixing fins, taking care toensure that the jointing tape doesnot overlap the shoulder of theprofile. Apply a finishing coat ofcompound 200mm (8in) wide usinga trowel. Run the trowel down thejoint, keeping its edge in contactwith the shoulder of the profile andwith the surface of the plasterboardto ensure a flush finish.

Clean off all jointing compoundsfrom the surface of the profiles. Donot allow the Shadowline HangingReveal (SHR12.5) to become blockedand ensure that the picture hangerswill be able to move freely inside it.

Sand smooth with 120 grit sandingpaper. Seal with Lafarge DrywallSealer or Lafarge Universal Sealerbefore decoration.

Decoration

Lafarge Profiles accept most types ofdecoration:

• emulsion or oil-based paints

• Stipples, enamels, texturedcoatings

• wallpapers

Matt finishes give the bestappearance.

Decoration should be carried out assoon as possible after the jointingcompound is thoroughly dry. Beforepainting it is important to equalisethe difference in absorptionbetween the plasterboard surface, the joint and the Lafarge Profile.Use one coat of Lafarge DrywallSealer to ensure uniformity ofcolour and texture over the entiresurface. A sealer coat is alsoessential before applying wallpaperor other wallcoverings so that thecovering can be removed forredecoration without damaging thewallboard surface.

When wall papering apply adhesiveright to the edge of the LafargeProfile, to avoid the possibility ofthe wallpaper peeling back.

Because of its 6mm thickness –Lafarge Contour wallboard isflexible enough to create curveswithout the need for specialist toolsor site practices. Lafarge Contourwallboard can be used dry to formcurves with radii down to 1000mmor, when wetted, with a radius assmall as 600mm. Standardwallboards may also be curved ifwetted, achieving a range ofcurvatures depending on theirthickness, from 2000mm for 15mmthick plasterboard down to 1000mmfor 9.5mm thick wetted plasterboard.

Tight radius two-way curves can beachieved by using two layers ofLafarge Contour wallboard to formcomplex three-dimensional shapes, without any requirement forwetting. This technology enables allsitework to be carried out quicklyand economically, without the needfor expensive prefabricated fibrousplaster panels or messy and timeconsuming wet-plaster trades.

For installation details refer topage 153.

Tight radius two-waycurves are achieved onthis feature spiralstaircase by using twolayers Lafarge Contourwallboard to form acomplex three-dimensional shape, without any requirementfor wetting.

Visitors to this five starhotel are immediatelystruck by the towering 36metre high atrium. Eachfloor has a curvedwalkway and dadoheight balustradelooking onto theentrance area.

All the balustrades andassociated wall liningsare created using Lafargestandard wallboardsfixed to Cormet DrylinerChannels and CormetMetal Studs.

Installation of thesystems called forparticularly highstandards of precision insetting out and detailingto achieve the smooth, uninterrupted flow ofthe curving balustrades.

What can go wrong

Items to check

1. Is there a detailed dimensional layout for the Lafarge Fresco panels?

Careful planning and setting out can avoid wasting time and materials duringinstallation.

2. Have the position of fixtures such as electrical sockets been planned?

Fixtures, and items such as electrical socket outlets, switches, television andtelephone outlets should be positioned to fall within the flat surfaces of the panels.

3. Is horizontal framing provided for fixing the Lafarge Fresco panels?

The Fresco panels should be supported at all four edges.

4. Has Lafarge Firecheck wallboard been used as infill around the LafargeFresco panels?

Firecheck has the same performance as the Fresco Panels.

5. When using Lafarge wallboard with Lafarge Cove, is the wallboard squareedged with bound edges outward?

It is easier to achieve a neat, straight edge with bound edges rather than cut edges.

6. Has a 12.5mm wallboard been provided behind the Lafarge Profiles?

This is necessary where the fire and acoustic performance of the partition has to bemaintained.
