Secure Fiber NetworkFiber optic cabling provides a greater level of security than copper cabling and istherefore used extensively for military and other data sensitive networks. In thisexample, Fast Ethernet clients are connected to the core over a pure fiber networkusing Layer 2 and Layer 3 fiber switches. The Layer 2 edge switches provide additionalsecurity through the use of Access Control List (ACL) functionality and IEEE 802.1xthat limits access to unauthorized users.

IP Voice,Video and Data using Power over Ethernet (PoE) In this retail store example, each Point-of-Sale (PoS) counter is connected to the localserver over a 54Mbps IEEE 802.11g wireless connection. The store’s wireless accesspoints are powered by an Allied Telesis 8600 series PoE switch that also deliverspower to IP phones and IP security cameras. Per port QoS capability on the 8600series switch enables voice packet prioritization.

Enterprise Resilience in the SMB In this example a small to medium sized business network provides connectivity toworkstations with the 8000S family of stacking switches. A resilient stacking ringtopology connects 24 port and 48 port PoE and non-PoE switches. Each 8000S alsoutilizes a Gigabit uplink to a 9400 series switch in the SMB core. The uplinks areaggregated together to create a higher performance uplink that spans all switches inthe stack. The result is enterprise class resiliency in the SMB network. Failure of anytwo links whether they are stacking links, uplinks, or one of each will not result infailed connectivity between the switches and the core.

Traffic SegmentationIn order to isolate network traffic between different workgroups, a network can besegmented into Virtual LANs (VLANs).These VLANs provide all the benefits ofseparate physical networks allowing secure connectivity for multiple departmentsover a common physical infrastructure.Within the IEEE standard, Allied Telesis hasdesigned a range of switches with appropriate VLAN support for specific applicationsfrom the edge to the core of the network.

Quality of Service (QoS)In converged voice, video and data networks or in networks where data trafficincludes time critical application data, packet prioritization becomes a key factor inefficient network operations. Packet prioritization can be achieved by having a switchdefine the Quality of Service (QoS) required by different data streams.Voice packets, for example, must be given the highest priority in a converged network in order toproduce high-quality, unbroken audio reproduction.Voice packets can be given ahigher priority and will therefore be forwarded by network devices ahead of lessimportant time-sensitive traffic such as email. The IEEE standard for QoS allows up toeight different levels of prioritization.

Network ResilienceMany business critical networks deploy devices that are resilient to power and othernetwork-related failures. Redundant power supplies and cooling fans enhance theavailability of individual network devices, while UPS and back-up generators protectagainst power outages.

Advanced software features protect against device, port, or cable failures byintelligently re-routing data flows via redundant paths. These features include SpanningTree, Rapid Spanning Tree, Multiple Spanning Tree and VRRP.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)Power over Ethernet is a mechanism to allow a copper Ethernet cable to providepower as well as data connectivity to a remote device. This device could be a VoIPtelephone, a security camera, or a wireless access point. Allied Telesis offer a range of PoE derivatives of our switch products delivering all the switching functionalityneeded for the nework plus power to PoE capable connected devices. Using PoEdevices alleviates the need to provide power at the remote end of the data link.

Product Features

Allied Telesis switches support a wide range of features. Many of these featuresprovide functionality, whilst others provide network resilience and manageability.

Network ManagementThe Allied Telesis switch range supports everything from unmanaged to fullymanageable switches.

Full SNMP Management - fully managed switches provide a range of managementcapabilities that allow network inspection and monitoring from a central location.SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) enabled switches can be routinelyinterrogated by management software. SNMP can also provide alarms to the network administrator when errors or specific events occur. In addition, themanagement software can provide useful statistics on the performance andthroughput of the network.

Websmart - these switches support a web browser interface that allows the networkadministrator to configure the switch for QoS or other management functions, yet provides an economical solution where full SNMP management is not required.

Unmanaged - these switches are simple ‘Plug & Play’ devices. The LED indicatorsprovide visual status of the network and connected devices. These switches are idealfor small offices and workgroups.

IEEE 802.1x AuthenticationThis protocol uses an authentication server to store details of each user who hasbeen granted access to the network. The authentication criteria can be a computerMAC address, but can also include IP address, Username and Password etc. Initially, the switch port will be blocked, but when a computer connects, it will be connectedonly to the authentication server. If the request to access the network is granted, thenthe switch will be programmed with the necessary details, such as VLAN membership. This type of security simplifies the task of the network administrator, by allowing themto keep all of their security data on a server and not have to program each switch. Ithas the added benefit of allowing the users to connect to any port on the network.

Denial of Service AttackA DoS attack is a hacker’s way of by-passing security on a network. The basic premiseis to overload the CPU inside the switch, causing the switch to fail in the tasks that itneeds to perform. In this vulnerable state, it is then easier for the hacker to gain entryonto the network. Switches that support DoS protection can identify when an attackis taking place, and can then cut off the offending traffic. This maintains the integrity ofthe remainder of the network.

Guest VLANsSwitches with Guest VLAN functionality provide a highly effective means of providingDMZ-like functionality on a Layer 2 network by separating private and publicresources. Access to private resources requires successful IEEE 802.1x authentication, but access to public resources (like Internet access) is available to guests who will notsuccessfully authenticate or do not have an IEEE 802.1x client. This allowsorganizations to provide hospitable connectivity to visitors without letting them freelyroam the network.

86 | Switches

Product Features

Security Method Application

MAC Address Intrusion Only allow specific computers to have access to the network. Othercomputers connected to the network will be blocked.

IEEE 802.1x Only allow specific computers or users to have access to thenetwork by comparing the computer/user against known informationin an authentication database.

Denial of Service Attack Switches have a limited amount of computing power, so bombardingthe switch with requests for information can overload a switch, thusgiving un-authorized users the chance to by-pass the switchessecurity measures. With DoS protection, a switch can survive theseattacks and take appropriate action.

Guest VLANs Guest VLANs allow organizations to provide hospitable connectivity tovisitors without letting them freely roam the network.

MAC Address IntrusionEvery computer and peripheral connected to an Ethernet network has a uniqueMAC address. Switches that support this level of basic security can be pre-programmed with a list of MAC addresses, and will then only allow computers withMAC addresses which match to an entry in the list to have access to the network. Inmany cases, the switch can even define which switch port the computer has to beconnected to for it to be granted permission to transmit and receive traffic. This type of protection is useful in networks that do not have any remote users, whomay change computer, or connect to different switch ports.

■ Any use of the word 'clustering' means phony stacking

■ Phony stacking is when you have to give up your uplink port in order to ‘stack’

■ Phony stacking is the daisy chain 'stack' configuration

■ Phony stacking is having to log in to each switch in the 'stack' to configure features

■ Phony stacking is being unable to extend features across all units in the ‘stack’

■ Phony stacking means your stacking interfaces operate at the same speed asyour main ports

■ Phony stacking will result in 'stack' downtime if the master switch experiences a problem

■ Phony stacking will not allow you to hot-swap a switch into the 'stack' and have the network configuration automatically loaded
