Bartender of the MonthMy bartender of the month for May is an absolute doll laden with a quirky sense of

humor, style and most of all a sexy cool demeanor that serves him very well. He is alsothe first bartender of the month from the uniquely New Orleans Double Play. I am talkingabout none other than Philip Smowers who has been with the bar for approximately fiveyears.

I recently got to see Philip’s extraordi-nary skills behind the bar over the Easterfestivities when the Purple Party was heldat the Double Play. He managed a fullhouse making sure everyone was servedquickly, never missing a beat. It is easy tosee why so many locals love coming to TheDouble Play. Bartenders like Philip are theepitome of what makes this city so great. His personable approach and conversa-tional attitude makes him very popular.

His devilish smile and charming south-ern demeanor also adds to his appeal. Buthis winning attributes are his ability to makea good cocktail at a fast pace. His gregari-ous personality combined with a profes-sional work ethic makes him a top at hiscraft. He also likes to have fun and get intothe spirit of the holiday; during the PurpleParty he donned a furry colored hat which

5th Bunnies In The BigEasy Brings in $6,886for Gay Easter Parade

The 5th Annual Bunnies In The BigEasy: Putting The Good Back In Friday

Editor, Ambush MagazineThank you for the story by Frank Perez

on the Lesbian Herstory Program presentedat the Newcomb College Institute last month.I appreciate the support from Ambush inhighlighting this segment of LGBT historyin New Orleans.

The panel presentation was an out-growth of several years of research onfeminist history by Janet Allured, Ph.D. inpreparation for the publication of her bookabout the history of the women’s movementduring the 70s and 80s in Louisiana.

It has been my pleasure to support thisproject by providing information to her aboutthat period, but I am not a co-author of themanuscript in preparation. Dr. Allured hasinterviewed and collected manuscript ma-terials from dozens of women activists, myself included, of the 1970s and 1980s.These manuscript materials, which will bedeposited in Newcomb Archives, will beavailable for others conducting researchon this topic in the future. Allured’s bookshould be available for purchase from theUniversity of Georgia Press in 2015.

I am pleased that Ambush chose tocover this important part of our GLBT past, and that the magazine will continue toinclude information about the lesbian com-munity, past and present, in its publication.

Julian SandsVisits NOLA

I am so excited that Julian Sands will becoming to the Crescent City this month in acelebration of the late dramatist HaroldPinter. I have thought Julian was the hottestthing ever since I saw him in that 80’s horrormovie Warlock. I am sure he would dieknowing that out of all his great films, thatis the one I found most memorable. Oh,well, I am shallow, what can I say. Sands willbe in New Orleans at the ContemporaryArts Center’s Freeport-McMoRan Theaterfor three shows on May 9 and 10. The CACpresents an intimate staging with the mas-ter of human mysteries, as channeled withaffection, humor and insight through Sands. While sharing Pinter’s little-known poetry,he touches on the playwright’s thoughtsand writings about art, truth, politics and hislove for his second wife, writer-historianAntonia Fraser.

Showtimes are Friday, May 9 at 7:30pmand Saturday, May 10 at 2:30pm and7:30pm. Tickets are $35 for general admis-sion and $25 for CAC Members.

The late Harold Pinter’s writing careerspanned more than fifty years. One of themost influential and controversial moderndramatists, Pinter wrote more than twenty-nine plays and some twenty-one screen-plays. His plays include Betrayal, No Man’sLand, Old Times, The Caretaker, TheBirthday Party, A Kind of Alaska, and theTony Award-winning The Homecoming.Pinter was also a noted director, actor, poet, and political activist.
