2. Introduction.. Industrial engineering is one of the famous fields of engineering. Many high school graduates wish to enter this major in college. But apparently many of them do not know what exactly industrial engineering is. In fact many of them are interested in this field simply because they think this field is cool. Even for first-year industrial engineering students, many of them still do not know the meaning of this major. 3. 1. Industrial engineering is a derivative of themechanical engineering Industrial engineering has a long history. But you should knowthat actually industrial engineering is a derivative ofmechanical engineering. The father of industrial engineeringwho pioneered this science in modern history was a mechanicalengineer. The first industrial engineering program in the worldis fraction of mechanical engineering as well. Therefore it isnot strange that many current industrial engineering courses arein the same department with mechanical engineering. 4. 2. Industrial engineering is not basic engineering,but an interdisciplinary engineering Industrial engineering is usually located in the same facultywith mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, etc. Butyou should know that different from the mechanicalengineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, andelectrical engineering that is basic engineering, industrialengineering is an interdisciplinary engineering. This meansindustrial engineering involve many sciences or disciplines.These sciences include mathematics and physics (as otherengineering), physiology and even social sciences such aspsychology. Another example of interdisciplinary engineeringfields are biological engineering, nuclear engineering,petroleum engineering, agricultural engineering and so on. 5. 3. Industrial engineering involves many principles ofmanagement, but only the scientific management Industrial engineering is widely known as a blend betweenengineering and management. Industrial engineeringindeed involves many principles of management. But youshould know that management in industrial engineering isonly scientific management. In addition to management,industrial engineering is also studying other socialsciences such as psychology. However, the same asmanagement, psychology that is used is only apsychological approach that accepts scientific method.This is cognitive psychology. So in conclusion, althoughthis science involves social sciences, industrialengineering is still scientific at all. 6. 4. Industrial engineering is not only for manufacturing Industrial engineering often use manufacturing industry asa model. One reason is because industrial engineering ismuch oriented to the Toyota. But you should know thatindustrial engineering is not only for manufacturingindustry. This knowledge can be applied across all typesof industries ranging from mining industry, oil & gasindustry, transportation industry, service industry and soon. Actually, industrial engineering can also be applied inany system whether it is industrial or not. Therefore, thisfield is also often referred to as systemic engineering.Manufacturing system is most often used as a modelsystem because this system is the most concrete, visible,and palpable. 7. 5. Industrial engineering is a field of engineering withmost extensive job opportunities Many people are curious about what kind of work suitable for the industrial engineer. You should know that industrial engineering is a field of engineering with most extensive job opportunities. Many industrial engineering graduates become professional in industry, consultant, researcher, lecturer, and even entrepreneur considering industrial engineer is known for the best sense of business among engineers. Industrial engineers can work in all types of industries such as manufacturing, mining, oil & gas, construction and even services. 9. 6. Industrial engineering is a field of engineering withmost extensive job opportunities In contrast to other engineers, in industry, industrial engineers can be found in many divisions ranging from divisions that are directly related to the production such as division of production, engineering, quality control and warehousing, to divisions that only support the production such as SHE (safety), maintenance, SCM, cost planner, R & D, and purchasing, and even divisions that are not typically touched by engineer such as HR, marketing, etc. 10.
