The church phone number is 912.384.5598. From the Grapevine... Duke University, located in Durham, North Carolina, was founded by Methodists and Quakers in 1838. Today it is regarded as a premier private research university with a worldwide reputation. Recently Duke was in the news because according to WRAL.com, “The university announced plans [last] Tuesday for members of the Duke Muslim Students Association to start the three-minute weekly call or chant, known as adhan or azan, on Friday afternoon.” The broadcast of that weekly call to prayer was to be made from the Duke Chapel tower. The Duke Chapel is, of course, an historic place of Christian worship. Can you imagine a mosque in Iran or Syria playing “Amazing Grace” from one of its minarets on Sunday mornings as a gesture of kindness towards the Christian community? Of course not. No one questions the right of anyone in this nation to worship as he or she chooses. The First Amendment guarantees us of that freedom. But for Duke University to broadcast a Muslim call to prayer from the Duke Chapel tower would be a great insult to that institution’s Christian heritage and its Christian students and faculty. Quoting further from the WRAL.com article: “The [original] decision caused a national furor, with Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Rev. Billy Graham and the head of the international relief organization Samaritan’s Purse, posting on his Facebook page that followers of Islam are ‘butchering’ people who don’t share their beliefs and urging Duke alumni and supporters to withhold donations.” “In a Thursday interview with WRAL News, Graham refused to back down, even for those Muslims who have condemned radical Islamic actions.” “‘I don’t feel I owe an apology to anybody. I think Duke University, they owe an apology,’ he said. ‘They’re the ones who owe the apology to Christian students and the ones who donated money for the chapel.’” “Michael Schoenfeld, Duke’s vice president for public affairs and government relations, said Thursday that the call to prayer would take place in a quad outside the chapel.” “‘Duke remains committed to fostering an inclusive, tolerant, and welcoming campus for all of its students,’ Schoenfeld said in a statement. ‘However, it was clear that what was conceived as an effort to unify was not having the intended effect.’” Duke officials backed down. The Muslim group will still be able to exercise their religious freedom and issue their call to prayer, but not from the Duke Chapel Tower. There is a powerful message in all of this. Christians spoke up and prevailed. This was not a matter of religious freedom or intolerance. This was about an insult to the Christian faith made by a University originally established to advance the Christian faith. No thoughtful individual could come to a different conclusion. But the good news is that Christians stood up and spoke up and it made a difference. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NASB95), “Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” Let us recommit ourselves to stand up and speak up for the sake of Jesus Christ who was lifted up on a cross that we might have eternal life. Bro. Shep Join us for a Happy New Year Wishes Life is like this cider, it’s sweet, so warm and nice. But in its perfect mixture lies a bit of tart and spice.
