Stats Tracking A Waste If Time?6 yrs ago I wrote a post: Stats Tracking On Twitter Is A Waste Of Time

Here is a snip from that post.

“You write a monster post, detailed, researched, images, grammar and spelling looking pretty good, it’s clean and easy to read.

Now your excited to share that gold with all your followers on Twitter, you decide when you will tweet it, you decide on the headline you will use on your tweet and you send it out and sit back for all the love you will get.

One –Three – Six hours go by and you only have 3 RTs and no traffic to your blog.

Your first thought is…What happened? What did I do wrong? Was my post garbage? When in reality, it has nothing to do with any of that. With all the variables that go into getting your tweets clicked and shared, you control maybe 2-3 of them.

So why waste your time tracking and see proof in things you don’t fully control? To me, there are a few ways I look at Twitter to see if my efforts are working and they have nothing to do with click counts or tweet tracking or anything like that.”

6 Twitter Stats You Should Focus On

I still agree with this 100%, but now that Twitter makes it so easy to check your stats, it makes sense to do some research on a weekly basis.

You can only control what you can control on Twitter, knowing that, there are a few Twitter statistics you should be looking at to see if your efforts are paying off.

6 Twitter Stats You SHOULD Be Focusing On

Here are the 6 tweet stats I think you should focus on to quickly see if the activity you are doing for your blog, small business and brand are WORKING and HELPING you on Twitter.

1. Retweets

1. Retweets

For me, Retweets are the #1 signal to tell me if my content is being seen and enjoyed.

Think of it as your followers giving you a “high 5” and saying I like what your sharing, I find it helpful and I want “my” followers to see it also.

2. Favorites

2. Favorites

Favorites are a softer stat than a Retweet, but it is still a helpful stat for you to see what type of content your followers enjoy.

For me, on the front end favorites are not that big a deal, I would much rather get a post reweeted than favorited, but on the backend monitoring your favorites is very helpful twitter stat to focus on.

A quick and simple way to see the type content you’re followers like or dislike.

3. Replies 3. Replies

Focus on the engagement, if you are busier, you are doing something right to attract all that busyness.

Replies occur when someone specifically responds to one of your Twitter posts.

That can be a comment, a question etc… anything that comes to you from another follower would be included here.

For me, I reply to it all, positive or negative. As far as negative, if it is just someone who disagrees with me, I reply, if it is someone just being an asshole, then I ignore.

You will learn to see the difference and choose the right action, sometimes on Twitter, No Reply is better than a Bad or Angry Reply.

4. Impressions 4. Impressions

Impressions are simply the number of unique people who saw your Tweet.

For me, impressions is a great way to see when you should be tweeting. If you notice that you get more impressions at 9 am than at 11 am.

I would start tweeting my MOST important stuff at 9 am.

The more impressions you get, the better chance you have of people clicking and visiting the link in your tweet.

5. Engagements 5. Engagements

The engagement stat basically includes anything a person does to you or your brand, including, if they click anywhere on the Tweet, including Retweets, replies, follows, likes, links, cards, hashtags, embedded media, username, profile photo, or Tweet expansion.

This is basically all I looked at years ago when I wrote that older post I shared above.

Page 10: 6 Twitter Statistics You SHOULD Be Monitoring Now

5. Engagements I just did it manually, I saw my activity “engagement” getting busier, I was busier, more and more people were coming to me for advice, help or to offer a pat on the back, and I was getting more traffic to my blog.

All that told me what I was doing on Twitter was working and working very well.

Today we can get a little more scientific by using Twitter statistics, but scientific or manual, if you find yourself getting busier and you see more and more traffic coming to your blog each week, then there is a VERY good chance you are doing things right.

6. Links Clicks 6. Link and Permalink Clicks

This ties in with the Impressions above,

Step 1, get people to see your tweet.

Step 2, get them to click the url IN your tweet.

That click can be an someone opening your image, clicking a link you shared in your tweet.

John Paul Aguiar | @JohnAguiar | JohnPaulAguiar.com

For me, it all comes down to the CLICK on my url.

6. Links Clicks Yes getting retweets, favorites, replies etc… are all nice, yes getting more engagement and building relationships are all nice and important but…

At the end of the day as a marketer, entrepreneur, blogger…

I am on Twitter to get people to my blog.

John Paul Aguiar | @JohnAguiar | JohnPaulAguiar.com

Monitoring the clicks my tweets are getting is a VERY good idea if you are here to drive Twitter traffic to your blog or website.

Use Stats Tracking Correctly

Use The Stats Don’t Let The Stats Use You

I say that because it is very easy to get so caught up in the stats that you lose focus on the work.

Some days your stats will make you happy and some days your stats will make you sad or even angry, but that’s normal.

John Paul Aguiar | @JohnAguiar | JohnPaulAguiar.com

So take a quick look weekly or monthly to see if things are going in the right direction, and make small changes if needed.

The Wrap

If you’re getting more followers, if you are having more conversations, if you are getting more people reaching out to you for help or advice and finally if you’re getting more traffic to your blog each week.

THAN WHAT YOU ARE DOING ON TWITTER IS WORKING!

Now to bump up your results even more, take a few minutes each week and look thru your Twitter stats to see if things can be tweaked and improved upon.
