Allahabad:After many years, smi-les are back on the faces of potterswho are once again finding it diffi-cult to meet the increasing demandfor traditional and designer eart-hen diyas.
Traders associated with PrayagVyapar Mandal too claimed that sa-le of diyas made of clay would to-uch a new high this Deepawali asthose dealing in traditional eart-hen, designer and metallic diyashave already placed huge orders.
Potters in Naini, Manda, Bha-ratganj, Dighiya, Rajapur and adjo-ining areas have taken to makingearthen diyas on a large scale ho-ping to break all previous records.Naini and Manda potters claimed,“Traders from city have alreadyplaced their orders since citizensare choosing clay diyas over facto-ry or China-made.”
Prayag Vyapar Mandal presi-dent Vijay Arora said, “Despite av-ailability of Chinese decorativeitems, including light series, custo-mers are asking specifically for tra-ditional and designer diyas to cele-brate Diwali.” He said drive to boy-cott Chinese products has undoub-tedly made an impact on themarket as sale of Chinese decorati-ve has dipped 40%.
Traders had already stockedChinese decorative items andlights prior to the boycott but re-cently, several organisations cam-
paigned against Chinese productsand exhorted citizens to promoteindigenous decorative items, espe-cially diyas. Potter Ajeet told TOI,“Sale of earthen diyas has sufferedfor past four years since Chineselights had grabbed the market butthis year, potters hope for betterearnings as sale of diyas has pickedup and demand is pouring in fromall corners.”

There is growing resent-ment among young lead-ers at the manner in
which four sitting MLCs andfour youth wing leaders wereexpelled from the party.
Thousands of party work-ers, particularly the youngerlot, want to see them back in theparty fold,” said sitting SP MLCRajesh Yadav. “We have decidedto boycott the silver jubilee cele-brations of the party as a markof protest against their expul-
sion,” he said. Apart from Ra-kesh Yadav, MLCs Santosh Ya-dav and Udaiveer Singh and SPsitting MLA Arun Verma havealso supported the demand. Lat-er, they issued a press notesigned by 25 youth leaders to an-nounce their decision.
Last month, seven promi-nent youth leaders, all close toAkhilesh, were sacked oncharges of indiscipline afterthey allegedly protested againstthe leadership over the removalof Akhilesh as the chief of theparty’s state unit.
