ST PATRICK’S DAY We love a celebration here at South Perth Seniors Centre and St Patrick’s Day was the perfect time for fellowship, laughs and anything green.

ANZAC DAY ANZAC commemorations were held at the South Perth Senior Citizens Centre on April 30th. We had a very large attendance, swelled by the loyal RSL members and guests. As usual, we had the services of Barry Telfer who played the Last Post and Rouse on the bugle. This always brings out the goose bumps. After a beautiful lunch, we were entertained by 7th Heaven, who gave us all the old WW1 and WW2 songs to which we all sang along – some of us with more gusto than tune, but all enjoyed the musical tribute.

MOTHER’S DAY How very lucky we were this year to celebrate Mother’s Day together and be entertained by the very talented children from Wesley College Primary School.

BIGGEST MORNING TEA In May 2019 we held our Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council. We had an amazing response to the event with community involvement from Wesley Mums Yoga Group and South Perth Walking Group. Local businesses donated prizes to raffle, which helped us to achieve a donation to the Cancer Council of $2,290.00. Well done to everyone who helped out. The challenge for 2020 is to do even better!

60TH ANNIVERSARY – SERVING THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1959 2019 was a very special year for South Perth Senior Citizens Centre as it was our 60th year serving the community of South Perth seniors. We celebrated with two special events. The first of these was our usual Anniversary lunch in February. We enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by our cook Maria, followed by the sweet sounds of Nikki Dagostino or, as she is best known “Little Miss Squeezebox”. Nikki is a well-loved entertainer who had the members singing along with her and enjoying the old melodies. Our second celebration, known as “The Main Event”, was celebrated on October 15th at the Royal Perth Golf Club. The venue was most popular as, although members live within the South Perth council area, most had never been to the golf club. Members and guests were greeted at the front door with a complimentary drink on arrival and then directed to their tables. On each table was a spring flower arrangement from Daisy Hill Florist and a 60th memento biscuit lovingly baked by Kathlyne. The menu was a two-course alternate drop of braised lamb shoulder with pan-fried gnocchi or chorizo and pistachio stuffed chicken breast followed by a delicious ricotta baked cheesecake with mixed berry coulis. Robin Arndt gave us a history of the South Perth Senior Citizens Centre, right from its inception as the “South Perth Old People’s Welfare Committee”. Thank you Robin for doing a fantastic job in gathering information and presenting it to us. We had a great raffle with local businesses donating fabulous prizes. The main prize of a Tahitian Pearl Necklace donated by Soklich & Co was won by our very own Kathlyne. The raffle raised $1,035.00 for the Centre. To finish off the special occasion, we had Nikki Dagostino and Libby Hammer entertain us and even had some members up singing with them to music from the 50s and 60s.

THANK YOU FROM THE PRESIDENT What a busy year we have had, including the 60th year celebrations which were highly successful, and attended by over 150 guests including near-centenarian Bill Grayden. We have been lucky to receive a federal grant to fund a new piano for the hall, which will be here shortly. Our specialised lunches have been well attended and well organised. Thank you to Maria our chef for the last 18 years. Maria decided after our final Chistmas lunch it was time to hang up her apron to spend more time with her grand children and families. We wish her all the best. I would like to congratulate Patricia Evangilsta on being recognised as our Volunteer of the Year. I would also like to thank Vida Corbett for her sevices to the board over many years and for successfully getting our website up and running. I would also like to pay tribute to all my board members and to the work put in by Margaret and Leonie. We must be doing something right because, in 2019, I was selected as South Perth Citizen of the Year and this year, 2020, fellow board member Wayne Muller was selected as South Perth Senior Citizen of the Year, and South Perth Senior Citizens Centre was nominated for the Australia Day community group award for two years running. What a great reflection on our Centre.
