Forward

The National HOSA Competitive Events Report is designed to help HOSA program managers gather information about the HOSA Competitive Events Program. It is through an organized effort to analyze data and opinions from HOSA stakeholders that HOSA leaders are able to implement a process of continuous improvement. The next 77 pages of this document will demonstrate a commitment to the delivery of a “compassionate, quality” competitive events program that has something in it for all HOSA members. Some important concepts to consider when reviewing this report include: § Good news! A lot of great things happened at the 2000 NLC in Cleveland. Look for the evidence

of success throughout this report. § HOSA uses a tabulations program to mathematically balance sections in events that are highly

subjective. Once again, this process clearly recognizes the highest scoring competitors in each section. It provides a large number of students with the learning opportunities that HOSA offers – in a reasonable amount of time – at a reasonable cost.

§ It is important to know what HOSA members think about their competitive events experience. Such

feedback helps us improve the event process, and, helps us realize areas in which communication about goals and processes need to be improved.

§ Once again, there were instances of students competing in national events that did compete at the

state level. State advisors should continue to monitor students/schools for compliance with event eligibility rules.

§ The event attrition rate (number of competitors pre-registered who failed to compete) ranged from

5-10% by event.

The HOSA Competitive Events Program succeeds in providing outstanding learning opportunities for students. HOSA competitive event evaluations provide compelling evidence of HOSA’s impact – student competitors relate HOSA as EXCELLENT when asked how HOSA contributes to their health care education.

Comments and Suggestions: § I learned a lot from doing this event. § The event ran smoothly and I had enough time to work at a good pace. The room was extremely cold. § Good job Mrs. Z.! § Why is it always so cold in the exam rooms? The lady from Nebraska who ran the show was very nice and easy

going. Thanks! § I feel that secondary and postsecondary students should be separated during the exam. This helps relieve some

anxiety on the students. § Some controversial questions on the test. § Well organized, but the room was too cold! § Definitely orientations a day before the exam so competitors in the same contest can get to know each other. § The room was way too cold. The courtesy corps let delegates wear tennis shoes and canvas shoes which goes

against rules and guidelines. § The room was quiet and the helpers were nice. § There is not much you can do to improve the clarity of medical terminology. You either know it or you don’t, but

thank you for asking. § Well organized. Oregon and Virginia representatives did a good job. § Better lighting and tables. It was good overall. § Try to get more organized so you can get things moving a little faster. § Be prepared and have materials and room prepared to receive the contestants. § It was a good experience but the testing site was cold. § Maybe have an orientation of this event the day before the actual competition to give out the ID cards. Start on

time. § Everything was good. The people were very kind and helpful. Organized very well. § I would not change one thing! § Check for spelling errors on test. Personnel Evaluations: § The team worked smoothly together. § The number of helpers (3) and courtesy corps (3) was adequate to meet our needs. § Print candidates names onto cert ificates prior to the event. Computerized rosters can be used to generate nice

computer certificates rather than giving blank ones. § The room was set for 30. The hotel helped us, but they told us in no uncertain terms that they had never seen

anything indicating the need for 74 chairs.

Personnel Evaluations: § Event operated smoothly, except that our room didn’t have tables. § I don’t think there should be so many Courtesy Corps members helping out. I think they should be able to use

calculators, and I feel they should be given more time. § They should be able to use calculators. § Event facilitator gave information as we proceeded into room, advance briefing would be more beneficial – with

designated duties. § For all sessions with testing, have cards made with QUIET – TESTING IN PROGRESS – NO ADMITANCE.

Comments and Suggestions: § The pronouncer should not have an accent. It is very difficult to understand them. (5) § If the contestants could be allowed to ask for the language of origin that would help. Also being able to hear the

word more then 2 times would be more beneficial to the student in the long run.

Judge Comments: § Proofreading of spelling and definition plus pronunciations is required. § Proofreading of word lists. § Have the keys proofread at least 5 times to be free of any spelling errors. There were some significant errors. § Tape entire event, make presentations afterwards.

Personnel Evaluations: § Be sure the pronouncer is proficient in pronouncing medical terms. § Judges seemed to be uncertain of rules, even after numerous explanations of the event procedures. § The pronouncer must know how to correctly pronounce the words in this event. § The pronouncer of our 3 judges did not correctly pronounce words. Judges seemed to not understand rules. § The written rules could be more clear.

Judge Comments: § If it’s possible, would be nice to have a longer look at the list of words. § Give copies of words, maybe 30 minutes before actual competition. § Ran smoothly and professionally. Need to have some preparation for the event, but since I was last minute, it

was OK.

Personnel Evaluations: § In the directions, you need to write in that a round is the process of going through the fishbowl one time. To

someone who is not familiar with this process, it is unclear. Als o, the judges need to get a word list prior to the event so they can familiarize themselves with the terms.

§ I enjoyed helping with this. Clear pronunciation was done best they could.

Comments and Suggestions: § 8:00 in the morning is really early. Especially after HOSA Bowl went until 11:30, other then that everything went

smoothly. § Everything was very organized. All of the instructions were easy to follow. § Orientation took too long. § Good questions, it was challenging

Personnel Evaluations: § Orientation and testing time is too long when combined. Orientation takes not longer than 30 minutes and

testing 90 minutes. § Students need correct information from advisors regarding rules – bring pencils, show up at the beginning of the

time on the schedule. It is a good idea to have orientation and the event together. § Be sure to mention in orientation about devices being shut off. Include more specifics about filling out answer

sheet and test. § Numeral or alphabetical order.

Comments and Suggestions: § To please have better tables/desk surfaces on which to mark test papers. § The whole NLC was a great experience. I hope to be in Atlanta next year. Thanks. § I suggest that the tests should be changed every year. In other words they should be used only one and

discarded. Also, the students should be allowed to write on the test to eliminate the answers since there are some who are visually oriented.

§ I have really enjoyed the city and meeting new people from different states. § This was an excellent experience for em. Just placing at state was exciting and new. I felt very proud,

knowledgeable, honored, grateful and surprised. Thank you for giving me this opportunity! § HOSA rocks! § I think the advisors from my school need more information in preparing the students, because we had almost

nothing. § HOSA is a great organization for future generations. § Time management § Provide scrap paper for the select few and pencils if possible. Thank you. § Everything was very organized ad understandable. Thank you. § More organization and less wasted time would be appropriate. § Color code seats according to knowledge test to eliminate student scrambling. Call names out alphabetically to

eliminate waiting in long lines. § The test should begin after all rules and information is presented during orientation to avoid having participants

to wait to begin the test. § Don’t make the introduction so long because some people get bored real easy and their minds fall asleep. § The section managers did a good job managing four different tests. § I thought that the organization for this event was not the best. The event started late, and the advisors did not

attempt to get things done fast so that there would be ample time for test taking. No time updates were given during the test.

Comments and Suggestions: § Very good. § The times where activities exist are fun, but there is too much free time where boredom becomes rampant.

Additional activities should be added to future conferences during the day, with the subject interests of HOSA in mind.

§ Events are easier when all are held in one building where everyone can have rooms (less commuting.) § I thought this was very interesting. I studied and I feel that I studied the right material for the test. § Give all instructions before the test! No interruptions during the test. § While taking the test I was disappointed in the variety of questions. I read the books HOSA advised. I spent

hours studying, reviewing, and more reading. The question about the facelift – which book was that in? I did not have any questions on the digestive system. I encourage HOSA to really read the books you told us to. These questions did not reflect the books you recommended.

§ Improved/updated pathophysiology study materials in understandable format. § Overall, I believe this event and conference has gone very well. § A practice test might help competitors better prepare for this event. § This has been an outstanding event and wonderful experience. § Improve proofreading of tests (spelling, errors, bad grammar)

Comments and Suggestions: § Why do we have to just sit there for an hour and a half to before we take out test? I got up early and could have

slept. § In both my state and national test the rooms were freezing which causes a distraction. Also having the test so

early in the morning isn’t such a good idea. § I have been competing in the event for four years. It has been a wonderful experience. § Orientation was too long. We sat and talked until we could take the test. You shouldn’t have to wait until a

certain time to take the test. Everyone should be checked in and immediately be able to start their test once everyone is checked in.

§ I think this is a good program. § Orientation was too long. § I do not like the tables that we were given to do the testing on. They were horrible. There were too many cracks

and dents in them. § I was informed, by my advisor, that no resources were allowed near the testing site. I was upset that when I got

to the testing it was announced that we could look over the studying materials while waiting. I think our advisors should be fully informed of the regulations before they are allowed to regulate the event.

Comments and Suggestions: § I felt that the orientation was very unclear and they were hesitant to answer questions. When asking someone

for information it seemed that no one had any idea what was going on. § Although it was nerve-wracking, we did have a lot of fun. An experience I will never forget. § Better equipment. § Judges should know responses they should give. Reading off a sheet of paper takes too long. Teams should

have a room for themselves to compete in. There should be a National Chair for the event who will be able to be sure the event is run smoothly every year.

§ More skills, no ties, individual skill tests, make it paramedic level, more EMS clinics, workshops, etc., too many vague test questions, let former HOSA members write tests/scenarios.

§ I believe that it would have been more effective if we had response from a responsive patient. § I thought the judges mumbled a little. If they could speak when telling us what they needed us to do as far as

skills, other then that it was fine! § Equipment was reliable. The judges should be clearer on whom the questions should be directed to patient or

judges? § Some questions on the test were vague. Bring post-secondary contest to paramedic level. All participants at

post secondary are paramedic students this year. This would make it more challenging, more exciting for students and make it apply better to intended field. Adult basic programs aren’t even long enough in duration to allow HOSA participation.

§ Let judges see scenario prior to competition.

Judge comments: § Airway select doesn’t make sense in the scenario – I would delete 10-15. § Students should be allowed time to see equipment in scenario before time starts. § Don’t change victim – male, female, short hair, long hair, size will change time. Victims should wear scrubs and

slippers, some clothing. § Score sheet – 0 = not performed, 1 = done but out of sequence, 2 = excellent. Put victim supine only. § Should make the evaluation sheets more appropriate. For example, O2 – why switch from NRB to a nasal. Also,

one team decides not to use the traction splint – their tx was appropriate – they stabilized the leg fx and opted to load & go with the pt. This is the recommended procedure from DOT & BTLS & PHTLS standards. It is a shame the team is penalized for not applying the traction splint, maybe follow NREMT assessment standards. Great students – they all did well.

§ Scenario could have been better chosen. § Separate O2 station and splinting of long bone station.

Personnel Evaluations: § Tally score was incorrect on one procedure.

Comments and Suggestions: § Ran smoothly, but a little behind schedule. § It was a beautiful experience. § I feel that it was set up pretty good except form the holding we had no notice that we were going into the scene. § The people in charge of this event were excellent. Had fun! § It has been a wonderful/rewarding experience and I am thankful for it. § Went well. I was impressed at how fast it moved along. In state competitions we sat in the holding room for 4

hours. However, I’m concerned that the judging might not be fair because not the same judge judged everyone. Different judges use different perceptions on how to grade a situation if a question were to come up.

§ It was good that they had supplies here. They didn’t at states. § Nationals was overall good. They treated you better than in state the judges and sponsors form Florida were

very nice.

Judge Comments: § Need a demo of the actual skills prior to event with information on each piece of judge scoring. § Possibly show a demo to help understand judging process. More clarity on hazy issues to help consistency. § I would have liked it if they went through the scenario beforehand. § There was some confusion as to where to go. The written guidelines outlined (not very clearly) the whole event

and didn’t give us a clear picture of what I’d be doing. § Run through a mock event and judging in detail. § Orientation could have been clearer. Go over judging with only judges in room. § Next year, guidelines will have some changes in 2001. Update accordingly please. § Make it clear on rating sheets if the problem does not exist (examp. No serious injuries on CPR victim) how judge

should score (give points or not.) § Need copy of event guidelines for each section. § Do a full demo with 2 judges and fake participants so all judges can see how it should be done if perfect. § It was noisy in the section pre-event room. § If process not done in order, do not give partial credit. § Add section on score sheet for judge to make comments on grade given.

Personnel Evaluations: § Great judges! Sloppy l/s shirts with writing on front with khakis should NOT be considered proper attire. § Charles “T” did a great job! § Better orientation for judges to be consistent instead of the opinion of sections – people see things differently. § Continue to have Charles as event manager. Have list of participants in alphabetical order for check in during

written. Well done!

(2) § The guidelines for judging should be followed closely § Make sure everyone has guidelines § The staff working this event was very friendly and very prompt.

Personnel Evaluations: § Be sure the state coordinator communicates with managers/leaders as to orientation/meeting times. § Just call or communicate with all helpers so all helpers know when to show up, etc. COMMUNICATE! All went

well this year. The mailout of duties from State Department L Hughes was very helpful and informative. § Time frame between entrants (7 minutes) was sufficient. Be sure to write start & stop times of entrants – in case

any questions later. § Give two minute warning for the time remaining. § Great event managers and section leaders and team. Keep the same team from Oklahoma.

Comments and Suggestions: § Great learning experience for me. It gave me a lift to be involved in something so big. I’m proud to be a member of

HOSA. § Very nice facility. Could be a little better prepared.

Judge Comments: § Tour the facility with all judges before beginning the event, from beginning to end so we can answer questions. § Very well organized. § Remove outdated criteria from the event. Require candidates to bring pen to record services rendered. With only

pencils available, candidates must be hesitant to record legal documents in pencil. All candidates that I evaluated did not record services rendered.

§ Room was too cold. How many times can a student redo the work before the judge says finished? Work stations needed to be cleaned by the students.

§ Excellent job and friendly. Maybe delete rinsing of gloves.

Personnel Evaluations: § Please review guidelines as related to washing gloves and order of procedures. § Event orientation was overkill. § Fewer event personnel would result in less confusion. § Only one event person. Too many people trying to make decisions – a little confusing.

Comments and Suggestions: § I enjoyed coming to Nationals and after all is done, it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. § Very organized. Great attitude toward students. 5 star event. § No notes on bus!! § This was a great event – everybody was so nice. Doing a great job! § With all the people in the room I felt very uncomfortable and unable to perform to the best of my ability. § It was great! Too many people in room when competition took place. § The PN event was very organized. They did a great job getting us in and out of the event. § More reality – sink in room, box of gloves in rooms, etc. § Too many people wandered around in testing area. § This event was hosted very well. I had fun doing this. Have MAR sheets for medication administration. § There is no PN program in my school. Everything that I learned for this event I had to learn on my own. I

believe this had given me insight that will make my higher education easier in the future. § I wish the event didn’t have to be off site. § Location was far from hotels, people were friendly and helpful. § I feel that everything was excellent, but I was so nervous I could not enjoy the experience. § The chairs for the event did an outstanding job. They were enthusiastic and supportive. Thank you very much. § I had fun!! Thanks, I learned a lot.

Comments and Suggestions: § I was very patient but it annoyed me that I had to wait 4 hours. Why don’t you try a new method? Give the

participants two times. One of them to catch the bus and the other as an appointment time. They can be spaced out 15 to 20 minutes apart. It can go much faster that way.

§ I believe next year the event will run more smoothly and be over quicker due to the elimination round. The staff was kind a courteous. Great Job Guys!

§ I enjoyed the ladies that were my section leaders. They all worked hard to put this forth, and I appreciate it all. § All of our advisors were very helpful. And all students, event competitors, were also. The staff that worked with

us through the written and clinical test was terrific. § I am so thankful for you HOSA Advisors for donating your time and experience to students like us. You’re the

greatest. I do tend to be patient so waiting wasn’t too much of a problem. Though sometimes it isn’t the same for others.

§ I loved that hosts were some friendly and helpful. I’ve heard from other events that they were rude. But I was treated so well. I’ve made more friends and had more fun there then I have most other places this week. Everyone was so much fun and nice. I loved the whole experience.

§ It was a good experience and it was fairly easy. They need to somehow make sure we start on time. § It was fun, but nerve-wracking. The people were nice and funny. The courtesy core was nice. § It was fun! Very challenging!

Judge Comments § There are too many in this competition so we need less competitors or more judges. We had 6 for 60 people and

needed more. The people were GREAT to work with, especially Anita, Barbara and Alicia. § More judges, 10 students at a time. § Need more clarification on multi-point areas. § More judges so we don’t spend 8 hours at the site. § Maybe instructions regarding the equipment room, beds, etc., could be given in a group so students would not

have to wait so long.

Personnel Evaluations: § I would love to see the section leaders and time keepers get lunch. The time commitment is intense and it would

be a great statement of appreciation. § Schedule students further apart in traveling to site.

Comments and Suggestions: § This event was very clear. I think that there needs to be no improvement – it was great! § Overall the event was fun and enjoyable. Some of the test questions were a bit unclear but other than that,

everything was well done. § Good job courtesy corps. They were very helpful. David and Renee did a great job!! Casey was a very good

patient. Try to make the scenario less wordy. § The event was much more organized and better this year. Less waiting and easier access. § It was a good competition. The judges did their job well but were not intimidating. It was an excellent

experience. § Need more information in the area of the questions they ask. § I wish I came more prepared. § I would suggest that all of the stretches we should know should be listed in the guidelines, other than that, no

suggestions. § Fun and good. More time for thumb and arch tapes to be able to talk about it. § Need to be on time. § Possibly let competitors know what taping technique during orientation. § Run very well. Good job! (Better than last year.) § In the future, please clarify whether the stretches need to be performed on a patient or on yourself. Overall,

good job running the event. § More specifics on test materials.

Judge Comments: § Many items judged have many correct answers but only a few are acceptable. § Drop the subjection portion of test. (stretching) § Everyone was very friendly. Some confusion as to rooms and setup with judges, but overall ran smoothly. § Need more clarification on judging the same as other judges, i.e. 1 specific stretch or different stretches. § Maybe going over each event as a group so we are all clear on expectations, not just hand us the rating sheets

to read. § Could use better explanation of what to expect. May want to consider orientation to be separated from lunch.

May want to consider questions that are less controversial. § Erin Dwyer and Tiffany Meyer were excellent resources and were in constant communication with myself

regarding the NLC. Once the room assignments were made and the competition began it ran very smoothly. Mandy Wilkerson and Gerry Emmons were a great help.

§ Have more certified trainers to judge the event. HOSA reps were used to help judge. § I was originally a section leader, not a judge. Guidelines were questionable – some went by the text used for the

actual event, some did not. This needs to be more clear. Need to have enough qualified judges.

Comments and Suggestions: § The wait was too long. (2) § My experiences in HOSA this year were great! § Some students cannot perform venipuncture or get certified to do so, and do not have the resources to practice.

Students should not have to wait 4 hours to do their event. It is exhausting. § The timing was very long. Maybe the competitors could have been split up between a couple of days so it

wasn’t so long.

Judge comments: § A couple of places in 2A and 4A were unclear as to how to separate out, i.e. 2nd sticks, not correct tubes drawn,

last vein. § An actual dry run would help. Make sure that equipment at each station works. Compare how judges grade (or

talk it over) as we go through dry run. § Urines – 1. Should 3 minute time limit include handwashing and gloves? Most had trouble with time, maybe

lengthen time. § Phlebotomy - #14. 3 pts. is too much for bevel placement. #14 and #15 should be combined for 2 or 3 points total

(instead of 5 pts.)

Personnel Evaluations: § Dry run through before students start. One judge do just one skill if time comparable for skills. § Dress code for skills should be reflective of safety standards (i.e. shoes, jewelry, hair, nails.) § More judges. Perform run through prior to beginning with competitors. One judge per skill for all competitors

with comparable skills times. Dress code for clinical skills should reflect safety standards (shoes, jewelry, hair and nails.)

§ It would be helpful if there were some way students could know how they did on skills and written test to help them in the future. More judges were needed.

§ Based on the number of students, determine how many rooms to run. § More judges. § Match number of personnel with # of competitors in order to have as many sections as possible.

Comments and Suggestions: § Let us know ahead of time, what we are doing. § I think the event could have gone a little faster and been on time, other then that it was great!

Judge Comments: § Some of the staff did not get any meal or refreshments and we were away from hotels for over 7 hours. Need to

provide food for all volunteers. § It would be nice if all volunteers – Courtesy Corps, section leaders, etc. had food provided. Or if not supplied,

please let the people know so food can be brought.

Personnel Evaluations: § The Iowa people did a great job of working together – well organized. § The competitors arrived at the site at 11:45 and competition did not begin until 12:45 due to timing of judges

luncheon. I felt that the luncheon should have been earlier so students wouldn’t have to wait. § I feel that all personnel assisting should have lunch, not just the judges. Section leaders were on site @ 9 am

setting up – with no lunch – we worked the entire time and should be given the same consideration as the judges.

Comments and Suggestions: § Lots of fun! § I enjoyed the skills part if my test the best and I enjoyed the interaction with people! § Get the people who were here first to go first. I got here at 11:30 and didn’t go until 2:15, but people who got here

at 12:45 went before me! § Good management § This event needs to improve the clinical portion. The way it is run is not conducted as a PTA program. § The testing and skills should be done on the same day § Good staff! § Better instructions as to the exact place to meet for buses. § Try to find a way to make students less nervous. § It was good § Needs to be updated § I suggest having a drama student play the role, people my age tend to get tickled or don’t care how well I may

do. Also using another HOSA participant as the patient is unprofessional.

Judge Comments: § Orientation was not good. Nobody knew where we were supposed to meet and we were oriented for 10 minutes

prior to judging. § Orientation was adequate but unorganized. We waited for over an hour. § Add use of gait belt to procedures for ambulation. Use proper sequencing in ambulation, walker →sore foot,

then good foot. § Not good directions to orientation site. Took a while to find. No signs. § 1) Add gait belt 2) transfers proper 3) high-low table and 4) proper sequencing in ambulation. § Did not need to arrive at 10:30 if we didn’t begin judging until 12:30. Waited around a lot to get started. § Allow students to have access to judge comments to enhance learning. § Have gait belt available and judge on score sheet safety. § Pre-conference communication was timely but not accurate. I received guidelines for the correct event but was

instructed initially to go to the wrong place. § No leader. We became our own leaders and established our own guidelines within the realm of the checklists. § Include marking for use of gait belt, include marking for simple terminology (keep on pt. Level), include “good

rapport” marking, include marking for proper gait sequence. § Difficult to find orientation site. § Categories that would be beneficial to add: Gait belt and terminology (competitor should avoid using technical

terms such as “ambulation” and “eversion/inversion”. Should show sincere concern for patient’s well being. § Instruction in proper sequence of gait pattern.

Comments and Suggestions: § The skill that I had was positioning the patient, and I think that I did not have enough room to perform to the

very best of my ability. § The judges were nice (4) § The wait was shorter then at states. I liked that § The competing was good. I holding room was too small and there was a long wait. (2) § It was fun! § This was a good experience. It helps for is to become closer to our future § Area was not well set up. § Some of the courtesy corps were talking badly about competitors. § Great experience.

Judge Comments: § Didn’t like having to add book to scales. Confused participants. § More realistic equipment for the skills. § Staff was very professional. Very well organized and effective learning experience for the students. § Students should be taught the proper curriculum before entering the competition so that they will be better

prepared.

Personnel Evaluations: § Two different event judges were given to different locations to report to.

Comments and Suggestions: § This was a lot of fun! § This event was excellent the judges were super! (2) § Some of the questions were not given a lot of thought. The heartworm skill needs to be updated since no one

uses that technique. § The written test was not extremely hard. I think they should be a little more specific when talking about

instruments to be tested on. § Very good organization of skills event portion. Written test lacked certain topics such as radiology, hematology,

anesthesia and exotic animals. § Well run! Nicely organized! Great experience § The written exam was better then last years. It could be even better. Skills portion was excellent. The site was

adequate and very well set up. § Excellent! I fully believe this event will help me throughout my college career. § Everything was good and fun! § I felt the event went well. This has been fun § I t was a little confusing with the evaluation, or excuse me, the scenario, but it was a good teaching tool to

actually be in a hospital setting. § Good Guidelines. I would suggest a more technical practical exam. I would also suggest that HOSA provide more

specific and clear questions on the written exam.

Judge Comments: § Need consistency in the procedures tested. § If the judges knew more about the student guidelines it would help with accuracy of the judging. § Help judges know what variations are acceptable – as far as point values. § Tie down was different, needs more uniformity, confused about different types of scrubbing solutions.

Comments and Suggestions: § Allow competitors to wear scrubs. § I think we should wear comfortable clothes because in art you have to get creative and be comfortable with your

work and I really can’t be comfortable in business attire. § Need food, smoother surfaces and music. § Maybe have music playing to ease tension among competitors. § If we could bring music, such as headphones to use during competition. § I love this event because I love drawing. § Be able to listen to headphones and be able to have a few pieces of scrap paper. § Fun! It would be nice to have smooth tables to work at. It would be nice to listen to music and wear comfortable

clothes while making our poster. § I think it would be nice if competitors could bring in portable CD players and listen to them while drawing as long

as they did not bother other competitors. § The event went well in my opinion, however, I believe the topics are too involved for a poster. It’s a lot of

information. § Dress comfortably for best construction. Open toe shoes. Head phones. § I feel that HOSA should allow more creative events in the NLC. I love the ones that there are, but there could be

more in the future, maybe medical illustration. Role playing would be a nice addition. § Let us have music, we are artists! § Less difficult topics or more time. § Maybe an hour or more could be added to lower the stress factor for some people. The time now doesn’t bother

me so much as the struggle to get a little more in. § Thank you for the space and solitude. § Other than the limitations on supplies, I’m pleased with everything. Allow more professional tools (T-square,

triangle, compass, just about any drafting tool.) § I think that music should be permitted, and that our state posters should be brought and displayed during the

NLC. § I think it would be nice if students were allowed the use of music from a walkman or discman.

Judge Comments: § Identify who is the intended audience for the poster – this makes a huge difference I reality. Have someone in

lobby to direct. Time and place to arrive were wrong. I was told 2:30 – others were told 3:30. I was told Dorothy Fuldheim when I should have been up on the 6th floor.

§ Seemed very systematic. § Judging was smooth – having others tally was helpful.

Comments and Suggestions: § The interviews were excellent! § I think that they are very nice and sweet and very talkfull. They make you feel yourself § I was impressed on how organized everything was.

Judge Comments: § There seemed to be some uncertainty about certain judging criteria. § Role playing for the group would be great – it could be very general for the larger group – just give an idea. I

worry I was too lax in some cases, too rigid in others. These kids are so worried, I wanted to be even-handed. § I think all judges should interview all students. This would assure that the best student is chosen for this event. § The questions for interviewing need to clearly ask what skills the students have learned. Perhaps let the judges

write out the questions they want to ask.

Personnel Evaluations: § Holding rooms? Eligibility forms - do they or do they not need to bring them to orientation? § Great job National staff! § Make it clear what is to be done with eligibility forms. If it states on the form that the students should bring the

forms with them to nationals, then Nationals should accept and require them to do so.

Comments and Suggestions: § Thank you so much for allowing me to compete in this event. Because of HOSA we are able to achieve a higher

level of excellence. Thank you!! You are amazing. Great job! § This competition has been a big milestone in my life. The awards and recognition are so important to many of

us. I began nursing school at age 54. I have had the most wonderful support from my school, and my family. But the HOSA opportunity has given me the little extra boost of self confidence I need. I love this organization, and intend to spread the word – “HOSA is one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

§ In my opinion, this event was well organized. The lieutenants and Courtesy Corps help to take the edge off of some of the nervousness that naturally occurs in some of us. The kindness shown, the since “good luck” that was offered, made me realize that Southern Hospitality not only exists in the south. Ohio – we thank you!

§ I enjoyed the competitive events. The events strengthen HOSA members. This strength will aid them when situations arise that require action. By reflecting upon the lessons learned from the competitive events, HOSA members are more prepared to rise to the occasion.

§ Need 12 minute prep time instead of ten. § Wonderful! I felt the event ran smoothly and on time. § Make sure contestants are aware that after they give their ID# to go directly to the podium to speak. § Make sure that the local advisors keep their students well informed. § Ya’ll ran it great. Thank you very much. § Please allow separate prep rooms. Some competitors like myself hold predilection to speak out loud and we can’t

do this with others in the room. Friendly judges, yeah! § Identify that students will be put in prep room with two other students, please. § Great job! § Students waiting to speak get to keep their cards and if they have to wait prior to entering the room, they get to

practice to themselves. Others are escorted directly into the room and don’t have this time. § An easier topic.

Judge Comments: § Rating sheet was very good. Explain difference between diction and pronunciation. § Everything went very smoothly. Things were perfectly planned and executed. § I agree with your judging form. Similar to one used in Toastmasters. Semi-finals and finals might help to

separate competitors even more. § Videotaping might be helpful to personally review own and winners. Use experienced Toastmasters again.

Personnel Evaluations: § Our event box lacked pencils and judges sheets. We had to copy them.

Comments and Suggestions: § I’ve had a lot of fun at this NLC. I hope to be able to make it this far next year. Thank you for all your hard work. § Resume could be up to two pages. § I really think there should be national “finals” for this event. § Fun § I suggest that competition materials arrive on time, it delayed the competition greatly. Overall, the event

advisors were very helpful and comforting. § One of the key elements for a successful job seeking skills competition is the interviewer. Make sure all

interviewers in every section are prepared and looking for the same qualities. § Judges need to be on time. § I liked how there was more than just one judge in the room. Even though things were running late, everything

was calm and extremely organized. § Make sure people know about how many resume’s to bring. § Run on time, have more interview rooms. § This event was real fun. I learned how to interview. I had a nice time. § List of jobs would be nice. If we were able to state our name at state, why not here?

Judge Comments: § I had the wrong time on confirmation but was flexible in staying. § Question #2 should have been separate: A) Intro “first impression”, B) Appropriateness of answers, and C)

Interest shown. § I suggest you change the procedures to a 10 minute per person time limit rather than the # of questions. More

realistic. § Seemed disorganized, not ready. Organized ahead of time – check written materials for accuracy. § I, too, believe Utah did not have it together. Could not contact them and entire group was disorganized.

Personnel Evaluations: § No one (from sponsoring state) was at orientation! § As a section leader, I didn't receive any information prior to the conference - I don't feel I needed that. § Once we got the event going, we had a late start because the questions were about 20 minutes late getting here. § Instead of having people in charge of sections, have people assigned to places. This will decrease congestion in

the hallway. Since their badges have a section #, we can get them right to the interview. § Lieutenant did not get to Sheraton as early as should have! § Start one hour before students are scheduled - have a larger holding area.

Job Seeking Skills (continued) § I feel a call back interview would be very valuable to distinguish between the top interviewing students. All

back the top 15 (or so) students. Post a list 1 hour after competition. Judges eat dinner and then return and as a small panel put the finalists through a short 2-3 question interview. (All with same judges) The interviews would be short, but would give the judges a fresh look and reminder, etc. I think a second round such as this would not take too much time, and would improve the validity of the results. The kids would also have one more chance after their first interview to show their personalities and strengths.

§ Event manager did not attend orientation meeting. § On the interviewer sheet the #'s were incorrect. See the numbers that are circled. § Would be helpful to have one reception room for every interviewing room for the secondary division. § Need clearer guidelines that the interviewers need to pick a certain number of questions. § Would like to see the top 3 or 4 students in each section come back to interview with the same set of judges. § Liked the facilities, rooms, chairs, bathrooms available for students. § Nationals was "late" delivering the materials as compared to the time on the cards…Nationals delivered the

materials at 12:30 when the first job seekers were supposed to come and fill out applications. Judges then needed time to select questions and we were 1/2 hour behind time. Possible solution: Please pass out questions at the orientation lunch so judges can have this step done.

§ We need to start on time. It 's distressing to me, the event personnel, and the students to be late. § Need more pencils in the box.. § The national HOSA materials were delivered late which made the event run late. § Better orientation and preparation. Materials not at contest site when it was time to start.

more organized. § Very well run. Everything went smoothly § This was my first time competing in Extemporaneous writing, and I felt confident of myself. Although I wish I

had read the official rules so I would have known exactly what the judges were looking for.

Judge Comments: § Enjoyed! § Time required was underestimated for me, a community volunteer taking time from work that I’ll have to make up

– that was unfair.

Comments and Suggestions: § Great job guys! § I enjoyed the feeling of being challenged. I like the way they gave us a time to be there. § Great event! Orientation was well organized this year. Need less sections because of too much variety of

judging. § During the question/answer part of the judging, the judges asked opinionated questions that did not pertain to

my side of the issue. § On the rules sheet I had received prior to the event, it mentioned that the judges would ask two questions for me

to answer extemporaneously, but at state and nationals, the judges asked three questions. This was fine, but kind of surprised me. All in all, it was incredibly nerve wracking.

§ Provide a couch, a massage therapist – I was extremely nervous! § The word count for the report should be twice what it is. It is difficult to convince someone in 500 words. § Category III which I was in had only 1 overall person. I believe it would be more helpful to either have the

categories all in the same general area, or have 2 overall advisors. § HOSA is an outstanding program. More non-national attending members need to be informed about how fun

nationals can be. § I thought the questions the judges asked were less useful than at the state level. One asked if I had used

marijuana while at the state level they asked instead how marijuana helped asthma. (It’s a bronchodilator.) § This is my last year as a HOSA competitor. I have had many wonderful experiences and will carry many

wonderful memories with me. HOSA has helped to mature me and I appreciate hard work. Continue to do the same for other young high school students.

§ This event was one of the most organized events I have seen in a long time. Good job! § Make sure events run on time. § A lot of work but a lot of fun! § Judges need to make questions clearer. I feel that when the speech is given, the judges should smile. § I believe the competitors should be able to see their score sheets after the events have been completed. Overall

this event was great. § I enjoyed how the judges gave comments about your presentation. Very kind. § Increase the maximum word allowance. This makes the contestant summarize the most important parts of his or

her paper. § Absolutely great.

Judge Comments: § Timer was excellent. Kept speakers on time. § Just invite us again.

§ Food – ask for diet needs. § A little slow between the meal and starting contest. § Would be good to see written part early. Would like to know how student finished. § Use a chairman to introduce the contestant to the judges. Such a feature would tend to make the speaker feel

more relaxed. § Thank you for having me, and to give me the opportunity to judge these wonderful students. They are all

winners. Keep up the good work. § Build in restroom breaks for staff and judges. You’ve got some bright students here. Congratulations! § Have someone introduce the students before they speak. § Better room conditions – it was freezing!! Stress strongly the written paper length. Are students told that the

oral presentation can be different from the written paper. It would have been helpful on the judging form to add under persuasiveness: Strong personal beliefs as well as oral persuasiveness. Sometimes we know students have strong beliefs but did not convince us by tone of voice.

§ Add conviction on the oral presentation evaluation item.

Personnel Evaluations: § Kept very well informed of changes and event information. Very well organized. This was my first time at HOSA

Nationals and very impressed with organization and flow of competitors. There was a problem with noise in the hallways and outside the room from other students. Maybe it should be noted in the guidelines or criteria or student information to enforce during ALL competitions there be no noise - (Ex. Post "hospital" signs.) This was very distracting to all candidates waiting and during reading/calculating time. Note: Noise was from business meeting at 3 pm. I asked constantly for the group to be quiet and advisors as well as delegates ignored me.

§ Count all words. Why are some one and two letter words not counted but others are? § Word count is still vague. Are abbreviations counted? Example: Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 4 words

or one? § Excellent event - better each year. Please start event earlier. § Mark all judges copies @ the 500 word mark so each judge knows where to stop reading. Do you preview judge

questions for appropriateness? One judge was asking students if they smoked marijuana to support their research. (irrelevant and inappropriate)

§ Clip boards for students to do evaluations on. Count all words and up to 550. (2) § Room too cold. Asked to be turned down twice and never improved. § The area was very busy, noisy, and had a lot of traffic. Hard to concentrate on adding and counting. Could

have oriented the judges in the area with the starting time at 11.

Comments and Suggestions: § Everything went smoothly! § The competitive aspect of the competition is very suitable and remains a highly regarded event that should

continue to be one that exercises and develops skills vital to students if they are to succeed in and contribute to the health care field.

§ Happier Judges! It was Fun! § I thought this event was too stressful. It wasn’t as fun, but I did learn something that I should be prepared. § I was just happy to take part in this event. Making it to nationals was a great experience. § Very good outline. Good specking room. Judges placed well. § The judges we nice and friendly § Organization was wonderful. Advis ors and others involved are wonderful to work with and very helpful. § I felt very good up there and really appreciate the hospitality of everyone. It was overall great § I don’t like the idea of having different judges, cause someone could do worse then me and get better

scores…Because judges have different standards. § This organization is great. I am glad that it is nationally known because this is an occupation that is needed.

Judge Comments: § Perhaps clarify the judging criteria. Not too critical because each person does have their own perspective.

Everything was run well. § Better than a few other organizations we have judged. § All timers should have stopwatches. Green card at 3 minutes – yellow card at 4 minutes – red card at 5 minutes

with 15 or 20 seconds overage allowed. § Your form is very comprehensive and easier to work with than some other organization judging competitions. § Tiffany Myers was most helpful providing necessary information. Hold back sheets for possible number

changes at end of session. § Since I was not able to revise previous speakers forms, I questioned whether I was being fair to some of the late

speakers. Perhaps a judging summary sheet might be helpful so that you can compare and possibly change the scores of previous competitors.

Personnel Evaluations: § Speak to the judges about being more timely. We had a backlog of students waiting. § Many years ago I was involved in this event. I feel it was greatly improved. § Still some confusion regarding competition roster, boxes missing items. Rosemarie does a wonderful job! § Allow event manager to have the box the day before. § All section leaders should have a divider folder to organize items. Need to evaluate time if it's required.

Comments and Suggestions: § This has been a very enjoyable and memorable experience. We had Fun! § It was fun, but a little confusing. § It was fun, but the time was a little behind. I did not mind the delay too much. § Everything was good the judges were very nice. § I would like it if next year we could not schedule any event on a holiday. § I wish we didn’t have to wait so long. § This was a very exciting experience, I really enjoyed myself. § Very worth while experience, I enjoyed meeting new people. § Everyone involved in holding this event was very courteous. § I really liked competing it was fun and I would like to compete more next year. Thanks for making this happen. § Props should have been used at Nationals. § I think that props should be allowed to be used at the national level. It should be considered a very important

part for the non-electronic competitors. § This event was pretty organized, except for the time appointments. § At orientation there should be one of the people that train the judges to answer our questions. § At orientation, the orientator did not know the answers to all of our questions. I think that one the judge trainers

should have spoken. § I believe that if orientation is held in the morning then the competitors should compete no more then 2 hours

after. The appointment times should be more accurate. § The orienation was not conducted correctly. The managers were unfamiliar with HOSA rules and were incapable

of answering important questions. The events should be timed out in allotted times to prevent competitors from being backed up.

§ Please make it so that everyone has the same judge. We think that it was not very fair. § Same judges. More clarity in guidelines § Need more understanding on what can and cannot be used as a prop. § The event was good but there was a lot of confusion about rules regarding props. Also the holding room was

not nearly large enough and we were more then one hour behind schedule. § Get more organized the event will run smoothly § More organization is needed because there was a lot of waiting and served clearly answered about competition.

(4) § If an event is going to take the time schedule certain times for the competitors times for competitors to compete,

then they need to follow them. The one-hour delay was ridicules. § The judges for the competition were great!

Community Awareness (continued) Personnel Evaluations: § Need food and drink for long event. § Prop questions were not clear. § Students mentioned schools. § Brenda did an excellent job. § Guidelines clear but somehow confusing. Please see that the guidelines are addressed prior to competition. § Have advisors start early to get ready for the event. § Need clearer instructions regarding props.

Judge Comments: § Actual experience in judging would help. This was my first time. § Teams should follow instructions and not bring extraneous materials into the presentation room. Flag protocol:

Flag should be placed to the right of the podium. § Guidelines were clear to us judges but not to the students overall. Do not bring all items (purses, RONR, papers

besides reports) in the room. Have note paper for judges. § Teams should be advised as to what they can carry into event room. Should they memorize or read except for

committee reports. (members) Not officers. § In the future, have a demo instruction. Have competitors a longer time for their presentation. § The organization was superb. Materials on hand, rooms adequate, set up appropriate, movement of teams

timely, assistance from HOSA staff excellent. § Have you ever shown a videotape of a team in competition so that new judges could see the event beforehand? § Judges must be either RP or PRP status. Teams must come with having met the highest of criteria. There were

several teams so poor that we wondered how they came to a national competition. § I was helped by the phone calls and materials. The dinner was much appreciated since I came from a teaching

assignment. § I appreciated receiving guidelines in advance of the conference because it helped me to focus on what was

required. § Instruct teams to speak audibly and clearly. The rating on the judging sheet should be higher for the skill and

knowledge of the presiding officer. This is a critical part of the overall ability of the team.

Personnel Evaluations: § Miscommunication among our section with the guidelines. The "formula" should rectify outcome. § Keep smiling. Keep the kids in mind. Thank you for working with us. § The event ran smoothly after we finally got started. § Let one state do the event or have a joint meeting of the managing states. § Need more sections. § Guidelines need clarity on what materials are allowed in the delivery room. § I feel proceedings should be consistent, examp. If some of students bring in agenda then all should be able to. § Problems arose because of communication problems. Everything worked out OK but a lot of confusion existed

at first and between different sections. § There was confusion about the number of agendas that could be taken into the delivery rooms. I thought only

the chair could. § All participants (event personnel) should re required to meet for orientation. Consistency is a MUST!! Some

students were NOT allowed to take agendas (with no writing on them) in the delivery rooms, while others were allowed.

Comments and Suggestions: § Give a little more prep time for the preliminary question. § Less complex question. § I feel that a longer time allowance should be given to each speaker, and perhaps more rounds should be given to

determine the winner. I had fun! § More debate rounds and longer speech times. (2) § Make regulations more clear. § Keep the rules from year to year and give states prior notice of the changes. § Well organized and very structured planning. § Give more information about the event and how things will take place. § Great organization. § Less tight schedule. § Fun, well organized, great experience I would normally not experience. § The debate counselors should learn to debate. § Rewrite the rules and stick to them. § Give a little longer for prep time in the preliminary round. § The prelim competition should have more time for preparation and speech. I also was unclear that we could not

have written notes. § In the rules, one thing is stated and in the holding room, another thing is stated, which makes it unfair since we

tend to prepare in one manner and not the other. Make sure the people running the events follow the rules. § Don’t change the rules! § It is absolutely ridiculous to change the rules and NOT tell anyone that they can’t bring in their own material

until the second we go in to compete. § The rules changed since our state competition, and in state we were allowed to bring in printed materials and at

nationals we couldn’t. Even in orientation it was said that we were allowed to use printed materials. § A chance to debate without being eliminated would be great. Have whoever participates (judges and organizers)

actually know what the rules and the way it goes is all about. § Don’t change the rules!! We weren’t allowed to use our prepared speeches. They said we could but now we

can’t. § Event ran smoothly. Appointment was a little late. § Better than state. § This has been a very fun and educational experience for me. I hope that other young people will benefit as much

as I have from HOSA. Keep up the good work. § The people answering our questions didn’t know exact answers. § Time schedule needs to be followed.

Biomedical Debate (continued) § I absolutely love HOSA. It has been a contributing factor in my career goals and has fostered my leadership

skills. My organizational skills have improved too. Event needs to be more punctual. § I feel this event is done fairly and is well prepared for by all. § I think the rules should be more clear because A LOT of students were confused. § The use of internet sources not being allowed. § Great job – had a blast!! Specify the materials (ref.) to use. § I feel this was a great opportunity to learn.

Personnel Evaluations: § We knew we had to monitor this but we received no biomed guidelines at all. Mail guidelines much earlier. § There were changes from state to nationals in prelim rules. § Some ambiguities in the preliminary round regulations. § Make sure all students are clear about rules and especially timing regulations. I feel a one minute time warning

should be given as well as separate preparation and presentation rooms. § Rules changed from what was at state. During orientation, questions not heard by all with answers. § Need clarification of #9 - printed materials? § Pre-conference communication excellent. It was very well organized. § Information packet very informative - had never judged this event. § Spokesperson thoroughly explained event.

Comments and Suggestions: § Very unprepared. People running this event were not ready for us to set up or compete. § The judges smiles made us feel relaxed and comfortable § I would like to say the event manager in our event were very inconsiderate and rude. When setting up the

project, they rushed us out under the time limit specified.

Judge Comments: § I never saw written event guidelines. Need to give each judge a description of the judging categories. § Written guidelines might help just a bit so that the judges know what to expect more. § Somewhat disorganized. All computer displays should be in the same category.

Personnel Evaluations: § Ran behind schedule. Chairs had to be rearranged, as well as tables. § Each section needs a medical professional (judge). One section had a secretary and a graduate student. § On judge’s rating sheet, #3 – evidence of prior knowledge – judges not sure how to judge this question. The

purpose of the event is not to have “prior knowledge” (according to the guidelines) but to encourage HOE students to improve their ability to present themselves and communicate career information to others.

§ Judges should be 1 of a health profession and 1 other (art or English).

Comments and Suggestions: § This was a very exciting conference. Remember to let students know that the importance is to have fun and

learn. § Events should start ON TIME!! § HOSA is an organization that has taught me plenty to use in everyday life and my future career. This event

involved a lot of research, which has also taught me much about the health field. Overall, I think this event and HOSA in general is an excellent organization.

§ This event gave an excellent overview of a specific career chosen. It took preparation and dedication at the actual event, organization was present, just not prompt.

§ Well organized. Fun to participate in. § Well organized organization and very fun to participate in. And you also meet a lot of friends from different

places. § I really enjoyed being in this event. It was a little delayed but that was no problem. I had a great time. § Be punctual – at least try to. § I know it is tough – but everything needs to start on time!! § This event is very exciting and I believe it is a wonderful way of educating people. The only suggestion is the

check and double-check the numbers for competition with the names to avoid confusion. § People were using electronic devices in the non-electronic portion. Judges were nice. § I felt the judges were fair. I had fun. § For all electronic events, battery operated or not to compete together, because battery or not it is still a computer

(laptop). I feel this is not fair towards non-electronic competitors. § I believe that when you are divided into two separate groups it should be fair because I was non-electronic and

there was someone with a lap top. Just because it was with a battery pack does not mean it is not electric. § NLC HOSA is really fun. It could maybe be a little more organized so it could start on time. § I’m glad that HOSA gives many different categories to compete in. I was surprised at the wide variety of choices

for all different kinds of people and their careers. Thank you for making HOSA so much fun to be a part of. § Better time management and organization. § I think the time limit should be raised to 10 minutes because competitors will be able to give more detailed

information about their career. § I did not feel it was fair – people using laptops and discmans in the non-electronic. Judges were very nice and

very relaxed.

Personnel Evaluations: § If only all of the Texas advisors showed up. § Please send tape, stop watches, pencils in CD box.

Comments and Suggestions: § We were only given 2 pencils to write with. This doesn’t seem practical when there are 4 in a group. We were

also given 3 notecards and 4 would have been more helpful. § Change judges regularly so they judge fairly. Keep within time guidelines. § Have potential questions before the NLC to give method of preparation. § Divide room when students are preparing for presentation. § Provide separate rooms for preparation. (4) § I don’t’ think we should have to walk that far. By the time we made it we were out of breath. § I had a lot of fun coming down to Cleveland, Ohio to get this wonderful experience and to meet many people who

have the desire to work in the health field. § Need to return scores to participants. (3) § State should send sample problem. § Sample problem from state or nationals for practice. § Closed prep rooms. § More prep time. § Be on time. § Less people in room to prepare. Time better so won’t be backed up. § Less noise and people in room. (2) § More poster paper would help. Colored markers. § Have a more clear way to present time remaining. A larger paper (poster) would be clearly visible to all. Thanx! § “Time” somehow managed a little differently. § It’s hard to get an actual winner for the events if there are different judges. But at the same time using one judge

won’t take to long. § Be able to see the time warnings. § Didn’t like the topic. Not enough to debate over. Come up with a better subject. § I didn’t feel comfortable with other students in the prep room. Hotels are nice. § People with prep room was not appropriate. § Have tables farther apart for the 45 minute prep § More time. The time is pressuring and hard to finish within also more time will allow practice for the

presentation. § 45 minute prep too short. Need 55 or 60 minutes. § I think that HOSA really prepares us students for the health careers that we’re choosing to go into. HOSA lets

us meet new people, and gives us knowledge that we might not have gotten without HOSA. Thank you for listening to my opinions.

§ Had fun!! Thanks!

§ Much better than last year. It’s all good!! (2) § More organized! Would have preferred more poster paper and colored markers. § I think HOSA is slightly going downhill. More organized last year. More fun and I had better experiences with

other HOSA members last year. § The event should be monitored by age. I understand that there is the postsecondary and secondary groups but

I hate for the event questions to be the same. I believe that the questions should be relevant to the ages. § I think that this event was run very well. There were adequate materials and working area to do a complete run

through of the question we had. It was run very well. § This is a great event. Need more diversity of supplies, different colors of pens. More time. Include more

background. § Timekeeper and larger time cards. § At least 15 more minutes to prepare. Problems with many solutions take more time. § At least an hour to prepare for this competition.

Judge Comments: § Need problem in advance. § Check to be sure the judges have experience in the career area related to the problem. Provide calculators for

tabulation. Have “problem” in judge room prior to event start. § This is a particularly difficult event to judge. If anything, earlier dissemination of the problem might help.

Perhaps some suggested questions might make it a little easier. § A little better explanation to first time judges. § Tiffany is thorough, helpful and pleasant. Advance notice of expectations and suggestions to bring along a

calculator. Thank you for allowing me to participate. § All HOSA staff were friendly, helpful and made my involvement a very pleasant experience! § Very enjoyable – a lot of very bright and imaginative young people. § My first time – was an enjoyable experience – nice to see kids on the right track. § Have panel discuss what rating means to them to get a bit more agreement up front. § Make room smaller for students are already nervous and such a large room doesn’t help.

Personnel Evaluations: § Try to have more help – courtesy corps. § I’d like to see appointments at 20 minute intervals to allow for judges conferring – this largely accounted for our

section running 50-55 min late. § It went as smooth as you could expect. But plans never go exact. The judges were very good at keeping in a

flow – just sometimes it takes a little longer to calculate points and get things set up. § Make sure we are told, not judge what event, but what section and room ahead of time, if possible. § State advisor did not give us pre-conference notice of what role would be. It would be helpful to have a copy of

the event guidelines for the event before arriving. § New rating sheet – confusing columns. § Have possible judge questions. I enjoyed it! § More time in this section because I feel it would take at least 30 minutes to make an excellent presentation. § Need to give all event helpers guidelines. § Some of the event materials were not ready. This appeared to come from the headquarters site, no the

chairperson. § Have orientation after opening session instead of morning before event. Try not to spread sections out so far

from prep room with other sections. Extra prep room to move event smoother. § There was a lot of stopping and starting. It didn’t seem to flow along. § My orientation was great, I know exactly what to do.

Creative Problem Solving (continued) § The time between the prep rooms and the sections was really spread out. There were long periods of time

between the teams coming and going.

§ Need more supplies for students – more markers, index cards, etc. § Immediately after opening remarks in orientation, remind “helper” teachers they need to stay for debriefing. § Organized management! § A little miscommunication with one section but otherwise went well. Need stopwatches for timekeepers. § 81 teams to check in – could be smoothed out some to reduce the orientation, perhaps by section. § Guidelines clear however I didn’t receive anything in writing. Make sure stop watches are operational and

supplies in order. This was a great experience.

Comments and Suggestions: § War of buzzers! Not knowledge. § Faster reading judge! Monotone judge not necessary! § My main complaints about my own competitive event was the temperature in the room and the line of judges

(who apparently were missing)? The room was extremely cold which made competing difficult. My main concern was that hands were not called in a tiebreaker game and my team lost due to this. Line judges in the future need to be there and active.

§ The judges in my room did not pay attention to the rules regarding hands. Other than that, things were fine. § Written test was inappropriately easy! § Judge who reads at the quicker pace and not in a monotone voice. When a judge speaks slowly, it impairs the

team who is behind. § Get a faster speaking judge!!! § Competition moved too slowly. The waiting time at one point exceeded on hour between rounds. Also, the

waiting room was not well monitored, and several teams either conversed about questions asked or with other teams.

§ CD players and food should be allowed because they do not affect other people and a person gets very bored after four hours of not talking.

§ I think that ice water should be provided in the holding rooms. I think CD players should be allowed. § Refreshments and snacks should be provided as we do have to sit still for four hours if we advance. The lack of

glucose is detrimental to our performance. § Let people put test number on scantron to ensure test security. Inform moderator about information. § Everything at the conference was great. § The buzzer would not buzz when we hit them. § Bigger buttons on the buzzer. § I loved competing in this event and I hope I did well in competition. I hope I win and get to a chance to go to

nationals next year.

Judge Comments: § Everyone kept it together and did a great job! § There were several questions that were not grammatically incorrect. Packets 1 or 2 had an incorrect answer.

Packet 3-4 had a question in which the answer was systolic but the question did not match the answer. § Add the fact that a competitor can finish an answer if the 5-second buzzer buzzes during an answer. § Review the concept of “penalty” for conferring until recognized. § Possibly reference text or source as to answer to question. Typo errors on questions must be eliminated. Review

wording of questions. § Have dinner at 4 pm “optional” – orientation started at 5:30, the “extra” 1 ½ hours added to the day. § Everything went very well.

Page 64: 6021 Morriss Road, Suite 111 Flower Mound, TX 75028 972 ...n National HOSA Event Report 2000 1 Health Occupations Students of America 6021 Morriss Road, Suite 111 Flower Mound, TX

HOSA Bowl (continued) § Someone needs to proof the questions before disseminating – several misspelled words, grammatical errors

which can make a difference when heard auditorially. § Dinner should be optional. Allow people to arrive at orientation at an appointed time and location. § I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. I was paired with experienced persons. § There has to be better quality control on answers to questions. There were several questions where answers

were wrong. We corrected most, but missed one – and students knew the correct answer and we had to refuse it because the incorrect answer was on the sheet.

§ Some of the questions needed better answers.

Personnel Evaluations: § Good working team relationship. Good rapport! Arrange to have water in holding rooms if possible. § There was a good amount of time to practice with the buzzer system. Many of the specifics had to be clarified,

such as dress bonus points and amount of time for answering questions. § Have all supplies necessary on hand and on site. § Have people who know HOSA Bowl work it. Mistakes made but they always are. Team can finish question after

buzzer, and moderator should stop when team buzzes in. § Not all jobs were covered and orientation was rushed. § Better communication to all helpers concerning the number of rounds to be done in your room. § Need more human resources. Too many rounds done in a single room. § Too, too many grammatical errors in questions. I spent a lot of time reading over and correcting the errors. It

would have been a disaster if I had to read them for the first time during the competition. There must not have been time to proof read?

§ Have some sort of drinks or snacks available. (Goodie bag was wonderful but water would have been nice.) § Jeanette Allsbrook did wonderful as moderator and Marla Whaley was a fantastic section leader. All members

worked together great! § Food for workers! Very long event and no food available at convention center. § Orientation excellent. A few questions were grammatically incorrect and some questions had various problems

with phrasing. § See guidelines: Timekeeper starts time after 5 seconds. § Check test questions. § Be sure answers are all correct before the round begins. § Accuracy of test answers was a concern. Use a closer monitoring of answers in the future. § Please make sure all questions are correct - not questionable.

Comments and Suggestions: § Get more interesting books or less books and more team members. § Books easier to obtain. There was an alteration in the room for the event and there could have been some type

of sign to direct us to the correct room. The judges were very welcoming and that eased my nervousness. § They could have had a better source of notifying the participants about the last minute changes. § It would be better if you didn’t have to sit so close to the judges. § Books should pertain solely to healthcare. § Very good. Don’t let contestants see the score. § Multiple choice on medical reading. § Much better than last year. § Don’t use books about other things than health. (i.e. Born to Play) Some of us may be understand baseball,

football, softball, etc. Don’t let us see the scores. § More questions should be opinionated and rated because anyone could read a book and get the facts, but only

could discussions about the book can tell if you read it or not. § I think the judges need to read the books before judging us on them. I didn’t like the 60 second time limit. § The questions from the book should be asked to A, B , C and then together, and them move on to the next book.

Maybe give us 90 seconds. § More interesting books. § The people shouldn’t sit so close, it makes me nervous. The score pad should be out of view of the competitors.

More time should be given. § The judges were really nice and they seemed to know what they were doing. They didn’t make you feel

pressured. § Tell which book each question is from for clarity. Alternate questions from each team member. Do questions

from each book separately. § More notice of room scheduling. § The judges were very nice and make me feel very comfortable when I had to express my answers. Thanks for

that!! You did a great job! This was a great experience. § State which book the question is from and which competitor is to answer the question before reading it. § I had fun! I felt there was a nice atmosphere in the testing area. The judges didn’t make me feel pressured or

intimidated. I feel HOSA is a wonderful competition. § Tell which competitor is being asked the question, alternate questions from player to player, do questions from

each book separately. § Don’t have as many people waiting outside, they create distractions. § I really had a lot of fun at this leadership conference, and I hope to have the opportunity to experience it again

next year. § The books have GREATLY improved from last year. Good job!

Medical Reading (continued) § Great fun! § Orientation of event could have been better organized. § I’d rather not look at the judges because I get nervous. The judges were good. § Enjoyed book topics. § The books were great and the judges were really relaxing. § These were a good book choice.

Judge Comments: § I would leave it like it is. § Questions on index cards. Omit judge selection of questions. Maybe have a reader only? § The questions should be pre-programmed and already picked out. Maybe have them on index cards to flip

through instead of having to find the question. Maybe have a reader who is not a judge. § Need reader. Set criteria for rating scales. Cards for questions that can be ordered. § Needed more time to review questions before first group.

Comments and Suggestions: § I would have loved it if the judges appreciated the book more, not just counted materials. § Nice judges! § This is my first time competing in this event, and I think it’s wonderful. It’s great to be able to see what my

chapter has done throughout the year, and collecting the memories is a great idea. § I really enjoyed the judging process. My judge was very helpful and nice. I received many valuable

suggestions to help me in the future. § The ID #’s became a bit of a problem but I realize that it was not the orientation instructors fault. Maybe a better

system for this is the only suggestion I have. § Explain the projects and make them more understandable. § A little more organized. (3) § It was a nice experience for me, but I would love to talk more with the judges. In my opinion, they are concerned

more about the chapter book scores instead of getting to know the activities. § It was a fun experience. I enjoyed making the book and showing it to others. § Prepare the cards with identification numbers before the event. § When judging is done with the outstanding HOSA chapter, I feel concentration should be taken on the number

of HOSA members in the chapter and geologic setting of chapter. Example: 0-25 members = A category, 26-50 members = B category, etc.

§ Make sure of all the names and numbers match up. It took way too much time.

Judge Comments: § Enjoyed! This was my first opportunity to work with this event as we haven’t had interest in our state for

Outstanding HOSA Chapter. A suggestion: Caution judges about spending too much time. The first book I reviewed I found myself to be too thorough, time ticks away. I was very impressed with the work and effort that the chapters put forth.

§ Judge sheets need to have place for student ID#, Section # and the judge name to be printed on the top of the first page. Judge and helper needs a place to sign at the end.

§ On the first two contestants, I mistakenly counted off points for incorrect order. The problem was fixed. I thought the judging ran fairly smoothly.

§ Everything went great! § Advisors need to make sure if the Internet registration is used in their scrapbook they need to make sure their

student representative is aware of their actual class percentage affiliated with HOSA and it should be typed and placed in their book.

§ I would have liked to look through the judging criteria (grading sheet) before I started judging. I was only able to look through the first few pages. I thought the whole event ran very smoothly.

§ This was a great way to track the activities of each chapter. The contest overall ran smoothly. Judges should double-check the contestant’s number. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.
