Forerunner Fitness’ Division, S.O.W.A. (School of Warrior Arts), indeed teaches children how to defend themselves, but mostly how to live the WAY of the Warrior!
✴ TRAINING OF THE BODY to include flexibility, coordination, balance, speed and stamina.
✴ TRAINING OF THE MIND to include concentration, awareness, emotional discipline, confidence, and serenity.
✴ TRAINING OF THE SPIRIT to include Inspiration, Faith, Truth, Wisdom, Spiritual Discernment and gifting development.
✴ TRAINING IN SELF-DEFENSE to include timing, distancing, accuracy, techniques of blocking, counter-attacking, restraint and disarm, and psychological principles in fighting.
First, we enjoy the journey and have fun in class!
Second, we teach our students to be safe by using a common sense approach to self-defense, protection, awareness, and social skills.
! This means understanding self-defense techniques, self-defense strategy, and conflict ! resolution techniques. Our classes teach body language concepts - things related to body ! posture, eye contact, and voice. What we teach is designed to give children a confident ! appearance that communicates, “I am a nice person, not a bully,” and more importantly, “I am not ! a person who can be taken advantage of.”
Third, we emphasize physical fitness and promote living a healthy lifestyle.
! Marital Arts training is a positive and purpose-driven way to get in great shape and stay in great ! shape. The various offensive and defensive skills you learn and practice are an excellent way to ! condition your overall range of motion, all while improving your core balance, coordination and ! overall physical conditioning. When you’re working rounds of partner drills, hitting the pads ! and/or bag work, you’re also increasing your cardiovascular endurance as well as your ! confidence and skill level. Also, Martial !Fitness is a fun way to relieve stress! In addition, we ! educate proper nutrition, which will only aide in the progress of everything above mentioned.
! We also develop fundamental athletic skills, such as coordination, flexibility, speed, strength and ! balance - skills that are required for baseball, soccer, football, tennis, and golf but usually are not ! taught well; they are simply expected. If you have them, you do well; if you do not, you will be left ! behind. The fact is, those skills are teachable, and when we develop them in our training, it ! sends the students back to the fields and gyms, not only more capable, but more confident in ! their environment.
Fourth, is the heart of it all - the way we teach the ATTITUDE SKILLS & CHARACTER/VIRTUE of the Martial Arts.
! This represents our passion and primary goal in utilizing the martial arts for instruction. The ! attitude and character skills include instruction in and development of the Nine Virtues of the
! Black Belt. These virtues are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, ! Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. Academically, socially, and within the home, our ! students are empowered to perform at higher levels, AND THEY DO!
Uechi Ryu Karate
At the School of Warrior Arts we primarily u5lize Uechi Ryu, pronounced (way-‐chee roo) was originally called “Pwang-‐Gay-‐Noon,” meaning half hard, half soE. Uechi Ryu is an Okinawan tradi5onal style of karate with its origins in China.
Uechi Ryu focuses on training for the Body, the Mind, and in Self-‐Defense. It’s primarily a stand up art and a Kata (form) based system designed to be prac5cal and potent for self-‐defense, but also purposeful in developing the aRtude of heart, mind, and character of a person. Tradi5onal systems of mar5al arts is always about learning the “way” of karate which has to do with lifestyle, moral excellence, and servant hood more than being comba5ve. It’s aim was always about a way of peace, harmony, and self-‐perfec5on.
Our program is holis5c, Christ-‐centered, and commi;ed to the success of every student! The beauty of this Mar5al system is that it works for everyone!
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling, wrestling, joint-locks, and submissions from the ground. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting fundamentals.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.
Training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense or just a great work out!!
Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling") and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance or competency in relation to progress and advancement through our ranking system. Though injuries can occur Safety is our first rule of play and our culture in the dojo is governed by mutual respect, love, and Brotherhood. Violation of the culture or attitude in which we train will not be tolerated.
Our training program really translates into a way of life and our desire is to promote a positive lifestyle and a empowering community of people who want to be the best they can be while helping everyone around them to do the same!!
