BY ALAN J. COHEN City Manager We live in an environ- ment that lends itself to mosquito infestation. Mosquito control is crucial, as they can transmit dis- eases such as West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever, Encephalitis, Malaria and dog heartworm. The Mosquito Control Division was creat- ed over 75 years ago to serve the residents of Miami-Dade County. As a part of the county, City of Sunny Isles Beach residents can call 3-1-1 to report a mosquito nuisance(s). Complaints are typically serviced in one of two ways, depending upon the location and the season of the year: Inspectors are dispatched to resident’s property when a call comes through the 311 information line. The property and adjacent properties are hand-sprayed with insecti- cides, if they determine it is needed. Trucks equipped with sprayers are dis- patched if numerous calls are received with- in one concentrated area. In addition to these services, Miami Dade County conducts surveillance (Landing Rate Count) on areas deemed significant to mosquito increase. You can also help with mosquito control by removing breeding sources around your proper- ty. Water holding containers such as bird baths, pet water dishes, plant saucers, small children’s pools, boats, and junk such as old tires are ideal breeding spots. Swimming pools that are proper- ly treated as per Miami-Dade Health Department regulations are not a source of mosquitoes. How many times have you heard theexpression “what will people think?”

I’ve talked to many a couple who havebeen involved with one another butbecause of age differences, reli-gion and cultural differencesseem worried about what otherswould think about their situation.

My question really is who arethese people that are doing thethinking in these situations?

Do these people meet every sooften where they discuss anddecide how to “think?” Are theythe ones who are thinking relativeto what they could to deride anything theythink is taboo?

Really who are these people who aredoing all this thinking that others are soworried about?

I personallyl believe that you and I haveenough of our own realities and thoughts ofour own to suddenly begin the thinking thatothers are so worried about and maybe Iforget that these “other are more focusedon their own realities to spend their time

thinking about our personal problems. I guess I think I am important to me so

everyone else must feel as I do.A couple I know have been married for

about 10 years. He is 30 yearsolder than she is.

She told me that at the begin-ning of her marriage she won-dered what others would think. She has now been married longerthan half her girl friends andeven has two children he doteson.

Yet way back when she firstgot married it was those same

friends that she worried about as to howthey thought about her elder husband. Ifshe had backed off because of what they allthought then, 10 years of would have beenlost.

She knew what she wanted and didn’tcare about what “they” thought.

I guess the hardest thing we have to faceis how to stop worrying about what “they”think because in reality exactly who are“they”?

JUNE 2012CALENDAR OF MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Page 5: 6.18.2012 Sunny Isles Sun

June 18, 2012 COMMUNITYNEWSPAPERS.COM Page 5

Every season has its own theme andpresents its own challenges and opportuni-ties. The social events of the season dictatethe behaviors of the season. The summer isfull of major life events; graduations, wed-dings, family reunions and vacations. Thetheme that unites these events is the desireto look good. The desire to look good moti-vates people to go on a diet and work out.

Humans are creatures of habit. So, toaccomplish your new goals you have tobreak some of your current habits. This canbe a daunting task. To be successful youcannot rely on willpower alone. You willneed a more concentrated approach.

The best way to free yourself from anunwanted behavior is to eliminate the needand the reason for that behavior. Ask your-self why you engage in it. How do you feeljust before you engage in it? Perhaps, youare bored, anxious, fearful, discouraged,

guilty or full of self-loathing. Examine thepurpose that the behavior serves. Whatdoes it do for you? Is it to comfort you orsoothe you or make you numb? What hap-pened that you need to be comforted orsoothed?

It is possible that nothing significanthappened. Maybe you can’t even remem-ber what happened. You might be carryingsome emotion and engaging in certainbehaviors that may no longer be relevant. As you matured you might have healed andnot even realized it. Behaviors can live onlong after the need for them has dissipated.

You cannot accomplish anything newwith habitual behaviors. In order to estab-lish new behaviors you will need to findthings to substitute in your current situationuntil you can eliminate the need for thebehavior completely. Be creative. Exploreand try new things until you find the rightcombination. Because of the effortinvolved you have to really want to breakfree from the restrictions of your habit.Break free and you will break out into a“New and Improved” version of yourself.

BY RICHARD SCHULMANCity Historian

July 4th is an Americanholiday of supremeimportance to us, but itdoes not stand alone inhuman history. July 4th,1776, was one of the gold-en milestones in man’sprogress. Benjamin

Franklin delighted to point out the strikingparallels in the history of ancient Israel andof the America of his day. OurIndependence Day had its prototype in theexperience of the Israelites. It was thedarkest of their experience, in the culmina-tion of their degradation and despair, thatJehovah gave his divine command toMoses: “Speak unto the children Israel, that they go forward.” That is the mostpotent command in human history, and in itlays the secret of all human progress, whether national or individual. Every greatleader through history has heard it asMoses heard it. The day of obedience hasalways been the day of emancipation, theday of independence.

The birth of our Nation was not on thebattlefield. The real struggle, however, which brought forth the new Government, was in the Hall of Legislature. That is

where the Nation came to life. Every trueAmerican citizen can, if he will, come tohis Country’s aid. He can perform theduties that citizenship imposes. He canobey the law, and by example, influence hisneighbor the same way. He can go to thepolls and vote for those candidates for highoffice whom he knows to be men or womenof integrity and of high moral value. Hecan implant in his children a respect for theflag, and in many ways, prove his or herright to the title of “loyal AmericanCitizen.”

The government of the United States ofAmerica was set up for the people and bythe people. The people were not createdfor the government. That is a fact that gov-erning powers must not forget in the opera-tion of the laws which have been writtenupon the statute books. There is no harm inloving our Country, maybe a little bit morethan other Countries, and pledge allegianceto our Flag to honor our native land.

Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to bepurchased at the price of chains and slav-ery? Forbid it, almighty powers! I know notwhat course others may take; but as for me,give me liberty or give me death!

During tough economic times, it’s onlynatural that consumers would be wary aboutspending money on leisure activities, forcingthem to take fewer vacations and to look forgreater values.

While marketing tourism may seem like anon-essential expense in a recession, it isimportant for leisure travel destinations andsuppliers to continue to market their servic-es in order to receive repeat business andattract new visitors.

Florida tourism was down long before theGulf oil spill. Florida’s hotels, theme parksand restaurants all suffered as out-of-statetravelers chose to take their vacations closerto home, and to spend less time and moneyon trips to the Sunshine State.

With tourism generating as much as 15percent of total state tax revenue, andbeing responsible for as many as one mil-lion jobs, many see the tepid summer sea-son as evidence that good times are still along way off.

“It’s terrible,” said one local travel expert.“You’ve got the engine of the Florida econ-omy getting to a real breaking point.”

The more tourists buy, the better off thelocal economy is. But when visitors don’tcome, there are fewer opportunities for localmerchants to make a living. Tourism is likethe export business. You get money comingin from another region, and then it circulatesthroughout your area. When you exportgoods, you get the money for it and itbecomes part of your local economy; it’s thesame with tourism. Money comes in, but it’snot going out.

Localities compete for tourist dollars so

that projects may be approved to improveland for the purpose of attracting tourism.Tax rates may be lowered to attract compa-nies that provide tourist services (like hotels, car rental companies, restaurants, amuse-ment parks, etc.).

Community cooperation and understand-ing the benefits of tourism are essential todevelopment of the industry. Are they will-ing to commit financial and humanresources to assist in developing the destina-tion? Political will of local politicians to taketourism seriously is essential. So many com-munities see tourism as a “last resort” andare still chasing other priorities rather thandedicating time and energy to developingtourism.

Tourism declines due to a lack of spend-ing. Some places such as Rome andBarcelona always will have a marketbecause they have an attractive history, but ifplaces are not advertised and do not haveattractive points of entry, then hotels andtourist attractions will start to suffer, andtourism levels will fall accordingly.

Robert Cruz, the chief economist forMiami-Dade County’s Office of StrategicBusiness Management, recently told com-missioners that the local economy is beinghammered by the same pressures as the restof the nation. Declining residential propertyvalues, tighter access to credit, higher pricesfor food and fuel, and a decline in consumerconfidence are among the culprits.

There were 5,000 fewer payroll jobs inMiami-Dade County between February andApril than there were during the same peri-od last year, Cruz said. Most of the statis-tics in Cruz’s June 11 report, “CurrentEconomic Conditions and Short-termOutlook,” were made through April —before the Miami-Dade School Boardannounced it would eliminate 445 morejobs (bringing the total to 2,000) and beforethe Miami Herald announced it will chop250 positions through erasing vacancies, buyouts and layoffs.

This will be the 32nd nesting season forthe Miami-Dade County Parks Sea TurtlePatrol that started up in 1980 by BeachSupervisor Mr. Jim Hoover. Since 1994 Ihave been on the beaches learning and hon-ing my skills of tracking female sea turtleson the historic nesting beaches ofSoutheast Florida.

There are three different types of sea tur-tles or marine turtles that nest on SunnyIsles Beach historic beaches. TheLoggerhead will be 3 to 4 feet long weigh-ing about 300 to 400 pounds & eat crabs, lobster, puffer fish to jellyfish; the critical-ly endangered Green sea turtle is 4 to 5 feetlong weighing 400 to 500 pounds. It is avegetarian & eats plant life & a lot of seagrasses. Finally, the mighty Leatherback isextremely endangered & will be from 6 to10 feet long & weigh up to 1,000 pounds! The Leatherback feed on soft marine lifewith the food of choice being jellyfish.

Sea Turtles go back in time 150 millionyears. If the turtles vanish from the face ofMother Earth then who will be eating thejellyfish? Who will be cleaning the seaweed from the sea so light can propagatethe sea floor? So you see not only do us

humans have a job to perform but our seaturtles have jobs as well. And so it goes inthe 21st century. Our sea turtle and theirfuture hatchlings need your help.

In the past, most nests located were relo-cated to a safe hatchery system. Butthrough the years we have made contactwith many Sunny Isles Beach residents &formed an informal group of TurtleWalkers. Most residents are on their earlymorning exercise walk. Some for pleasure& finding a moment to reflect & relax, butfor other it’s a business of keeping inshape. It is a medical fact that walking foryour health can trim you down and alsoextend your life.

This is the point of this little story. Themore beach goers & beach residents whoknow about endangered sea turtles, the bet-ter they can survive. Only one percent willmake it to maturity. In the 2011 nestingseason The City of Sunny Isles Beach had53 endangered Loggerhead nests & fourcritically endangered Green sea turtle nestsdocumented on your shores. Out of the 57nests 2,063 eggs were yielded. Not all eggshatch, some may be infertile. But 1,655 seaturtle hatchlings did make their way to thesea. Each sea turtle nest will have 50 to 180eggs deposited in the nest. This is called aclutch of eggs.

A sea turtle nest will take 55to 60 days to unfold baby seaturtles, known as hatchlings. The first nest is historically inmid May. June & July are veryhigh nesting months & knownas the Peak Nesting Time.Nesting will continue until midSeptember. The last baby tur-tles will leave about the end ofOctober. May 1st to October31st is the nesting season inMiami-Dade.

The Sunny Isles Beach firstsea turtle nest of the season

was located on May 14th behind the OceanI on 193rd street. Nest two & three werelocated on May 15th. One at SamsonOceanfront Park & the other is behind TheTurnberry Ocean Colony. This 2012 seasonwe are making plans to have a CommunitySea Turtle Hatchling Release in midAugust. Details to follow, as MotherNature provides new life on an AncientNesting Beach.

WE ALL CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY:

• Helping Beach Maintenance pick upplastic products before they become a sea-faring menace to sea life.

• Keep watch from July to October forwayward sea turtle hatchlings.

• Never approach turtles emerging fromthe sea or disturb or harass nesting turtles.

• No matter how quiet, humans willoften - and unknowingly - frighten nestingsea turtles back into the sea.

• Use caution while boating to avoid col-lision with turtles.

• Stay clear of marked sea turtle nests onthe beach.

• Keep bright lights from shining ontothe beach. If you have security or safetylights near the beach, build shades aroundthe light so the beach is not directly illumi-nated.

• Other issues that diminish sea turtle pop-ulations are oil spills, & discarded fish line.

• Call the Florida Fish & WildlifeConservation Commission (FFWC) toreport someone disturbing a sea turtle nestor an injured, dead, or harassed sea turtle,or wayward sea turtle hatchlings. Call: 1-888-404-FWCC or from your cell phone:*FWC or #FWC.

MAs schools get ready tolet out for the summer, families will be spendingmore time outdoors andon the move. June isNational Safety Month, and whether you’re a par-ent, grandparent or family

friend, it’s important that you know how tomake sure children stay safe.

I recently read a disheartening factfrom the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC) - one child dies from apreventable injury ever hour. Leadingcauses of accidental injuries includedrowning, suffocation, poisoning, burns, falls, and car accidents. The CDC is com-mitted to helping protect children fromthese injuries and has developed a numberof resources to educate parents and kidsabout how to prevent injuries.

Whatt cann youu doo too preventt childinjuries?Be Alert – Store any prescription medica-tions, cleaning products and other toxicproducts away from a child’s reach. Selecta car seat based on your child's age, height, and weight. Ensure that your child wears aproperly fitted helmet when riding a bicy-cle. Install a smoke alarm in your house.Do not leave your child unattended whenswimming or near water.Educate Your Children - Use the Color MeSafe coloring book with your children toteach them about safety at home and on thego. Find it both in English athttp://www.cdc.gov/injury/pdfs/ColorMeSafe_eng-a.pdf and in Spanish athttp://www.cdc.gov/injury/pdfs/ColorMeSafe_spa-a.pdf.

Pool safety in particular has been animportant issue to me throughout my leg-islative career. I sponsored and passed thefirst federal pool and spa safety legislation

signed into law in our nation’s history inDecember 2007 - the Virginia GraemeBaker Pool and Spa Safety Act. The lawrequires all public pools and spas to havesafety drain covers, and in certain circum-stances, an anti-entrapment system. Thegoal of the law is to improve the safety ofall pools and spas by increasing the layersof protection and promoting uninterruptedsupervision to prevent child drowning andentrapment. Learn more about how to pre-vent drowning and keep your kids safe byvisiting http://poolsafely.gov/

Rep. Wasserman Schultz talks to agroup of 6-year-olds in Hollywood whojust received a water safety lesson as partof the Red Cross' new "Big Splash 1-2-3"program.

Talk with your teen drivers about safedriving practices in order to reduce drivinginjuries. For more helpful tips, check outthe CDC’s Parents are the Key campaign athttp://www.cdc.gov/ParentsAreTheKey/about/index.html.

Congratulations are in order to theMiami Beach Chamber for presenting yetanother fabulous Gala event. By a chanceoccurrence, I was seated next to a wonder-ful woman who used to live in Louisville,Kentucky and she quickly recognized andremembered me from my years (1990-1993) as a news reporter in Louisville.Wow - what a small and inter-connectedworld!

That incident got me thinking about myrecent trip to Nairobi, Kenya and theincredible individuals I met, especially thewomen. My work to produce a video aboutthe GE Solar Powered Water KioskSolution by The HabiHut took me toAfrica for what turned out to be an enlight-ening experience. The HabiHut, installedin one of the city’s slums, is a projectwhich is training women to use the waterfiltration system inside The HabiHut, giv-ing the women access to clean, safe drink-ing water. The program is also providingthem with practical business training. Thewomen will be able to sell the filteredwater, providing them with a much- need-ed source of income.

What impressed me most about thesewomen? Well, for starters these ladies arefaced with living conditions most of uscould never even comprehend! No elec-tricity, no running water and in many

cases, make-shift homes with mud and dirtflooring. Yet, despite this reality, thewomen I met possessed a positive spiritand attitude. Each day we were greetedwith warm smiles, heartfelt hugs and agenuine enthusiasm to be involved withThe HabiHut project. One woman, Mary, told me she had suffered typhoid fourtimes and somehow, she still had a positivedisposition!

And just when I thought my admirationfor my new Kenyan sisters couldn’tincrease, I learned more about a compan-ion business program called the NewTuenedelee Women Group. A handful ofladies are producing wares to sell for prof-it. The collection includes hand- madejewelry, beaded baskets, greeting cards, silk wraps, aprons and quilted ladies’ handbags. In honor of the perseverance of thesewomen, I have challenged myself to helpbring their products to a larger, world-con-nected audience. This is a shameless plug, but contact me for information on how toorder items direct from the amazingwomen in Nairobi!

It truly is a small and inter-connectedworld and I am honored to help make evenmore connections!

FLASHBACK TO OCT. 11, 2002It was a warm, starry night in October of

2002 when legendary developer Donald J.Trump along with partners Michael andGil Dezer invited hundreds of guests towitness the largest foundation pouring instate history for the magnificent TrumpPalace, destined to grace the east side ofCollins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach.

Just before more than 8.8 million pounds ofcement thundered into the ground for a non-stop 24 hour period, the first Mayor of SunnyIsles Beach, the late David Samson, alongwith other city leaders joined in the ceremoni-al placement of a “Moment in Time” timecapsule containing historically significantitems and letters written by many communityleaders responsible for the growth and devel-opment of Sunny Isles Beach.

“Fifty years ago, Miami Beach enjoyeda golden era and now we’re looking for-ward to a ‘platinum’ era launched byDonald Trump’s extraordinary vision forthe future of resort living in SouthFlorida,” Samson said.

FAST FORWARD TO 2047Applause will ring out as a future Mayor

opens the “Moment in Time” time capsule. The precious memories inside document alegacy of vision, dedication and determina-tion to forge a city where citizens couldtake control of their own destiny; live theAmerican dream; and enjoy the highestquality of life in Sunny Isles Beach.

Here’s a sneak preview of the time cap-sule’s “historic” contents:

CURRENT MAYOR NORMAN S. EDELCUP“The redevelopment of the old motel

strip identifying the Sunny Isles Beacharea prior to incorporation, into a luxuriousoceanfront residential, friendly communityhas been the top priority in the city’s initialfirst five years. Current plans to redevelopthe west side of Collins Avenue and Sunny

Isles Beach Boulevard into a new ‘TownCenter’ is the next exciting phase ofgrowth…This has been my home for thepast 33 years. I have enjoyed everymoment living here and I’m motivated toserve in city government in order to giveback to the community.”

A LETTER FROM THE LATE MAYOR DAVID SAMSON

“Since incorporation, this city has builtthe best police department in the country;started a shuttle bus service; increasedbeach access; maintained a cleaner citythat is code compliant; installed trash cansand bus benches; and received its own postoffice. Drainage improvement programsare ongoing and will continue as sched-uled… I’m proud to say our elected offi-cials and staff have worked together tomake great strides in the quality of life forresidents and visitors alike.”

THE LATE NORMAN M. GILLER, FAMEDARCHITECT; FOUNDER OF THE FIRST COMMERCIAL BANK IN SUNNY ISLESBEACH; FIRST PRESIDENT OF CONCERNEDCITIZENS OF NORTHEAST DADE

“My first recollection of Sunny IslesBeach dates back to the early 1930’s, when Iwas a teenager…At that time, Sunny Isleswas considered ‘way out in the country.’ In1949, I designed the first two-story motel inthe U.S. on the ocean near 157th Street. As aresult of this successful project, I designedmany more motels on Collins Avenue andaround the country…With more than 70years of personal involvement, I have a veryclose feeling for the City of Sunny IslesBeach and look forward to the next 50 yearsas one of further great achievements.”

BOB LILIENFELD, CHARTER COMMISSION CHAIR

““When I came to Sunny Isles Beach andlooked out from the 12th floor of my con-dominium, all you saw were pine trees andocean. Slowly, as Oceania was built andOcean One, I began to appreciate thatgreater control at the local level was need-ed. Now we have a wonderful police force,

the streets are safe and development hascontinued at a rapid rate.”

FORMER COMM. ROSLYN BREZIN, MEMBER OF THE CHARTER COMMISSION

“I visualize the residents of Sunny IslesBeach enjoying a feeling of unity, sharingthe knowledge that this beautiful and safecity is a model for others.”

THE LATE ELLEN MOONEY WYNNE, SUNNY ISLES BEACH RESIDENT FOR OVER 50 YEARS

“In 1924, Harvey B. Graves purchasedmiles of oceanfront property. This waslocated at the east end of 163rd Street. Henamed the strip of land Sunny Isles - the‘Venice of America.’…Sunny Isles joinedFulford by the Sea in 1924.

“Sunny Isles was a quiet village until1936. At this time, Thomas Pancoast andIrvin G. Collins built the Sunny Isles Pierat 163rd Street…In 1936, the MiamianMagazine pronounced it as ‘Florida’sgreatest contribution to Sports Fishing.’ In1947, a hurricane destroyed the end of thepier. However, it was rebuilt with steel sup-ports in 1953. In 1982, the Sunny Islesfishing pier was designated a historic siteby the Metro-Dade County HistoricPreservation Board.

“In February, 1964, the Beatles visitedthe Deauville Hotel. They spent most oftheir time at the Peppermint Lounge and atthe Castaway Wreck Bar…The media wasforever photographing them under thename of Sunny Isles and placing this namein the limelight throughout the world.

I could go on with history, such as thedrug store on the corner of 163rd andCollins with the big sign advertisingCoppertone and the cute little blondgirl…There is so much history in SunnyIsles. I know. I have lived it from 1952until now. I don’t plan on leaving.”

FORMER COMM. DANNY IGLESIAS“I may not be around when this [time

capsule] is opened, but I believe our visionwill be strong and alive. I worked alongwith Mayor David Samson to incorporate

this city so we could rule our own destiny. In just five years, we [established] the bestpolice force, proven by one of our officerswinning the nation’s ‘Top Cop Award.’

“[Our city’s] zoning code has led to theredevelopment of this city with the emer-gence of a beautiful skyline on the east sideof Collins Avenue – replacing the oldmotels. We have built four new parks, which this area never had before, and we’reworking on more. I hope on the city’s 50thanniversary, families can still enjoy theseparks and that the beauty of Sunny IslesBeach, along with our most valued asset -our citizens - continue to flourish.”

FORMER COMM. GERRY GOODMAN“I ran for City Commissioner and on

Sept. 11, 2001, I was elected to a four-yearterm representing the Winston Towers dis-trict. As a Commissioner, I am working tomake Sunny Isles Beach the ‘jewel ofMiami-Dade County.’ When the time cap-sule is opened, they will judge our success.I am also giving my grandchildren a letternotifying them to try and be in Sunny IslesBeach when the time capsule is opened onthe 50th birthday of the City.”

SEN. DAN GELBER’S ‘SUNNY PREDICTIONS’

“It has been 50 years since the City ofSunny Isles Beach was born. In the last 50years, so much has happened. Most of thoseold luxury condominiums built at the turn ofthe century have been replaced with newluxury condominiums. The Congress hasdeclared our world-class City Hall built in2004 an ‘historic building.’ Our PerformingArts Center has become the envy of theregion and the Sunny Isles Beach balletcompanies just made its premier at theKennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

“Researchers at Sunny Isles BeachHospital have made incredible advance-ments in cancer prevention, perhapsexplaining why Sunny Isles Beach resi-dents have an average life expectancy of112. All in all, life is good and it has beena pretty good 50 years…Can’t wait for theyear 3,000!”
