HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL FLYBALLERS.2002 was another good year for Flyball withthe largest ever entry in the BFA SummerChampionship and as usual it had hard andclose fought Tournaments throughout. Ourcongratulations to the winners, the BarkshireBandits and thanks to everyone who made itsuch a grand event with the results going to the‘wire’ at the last competition. There are somedissenting voices against the format of theChampionship but they are more than made upby the thanks received at the Awards Ceremony, with one Team thanking the BFA for a muchneeded boost after some tough times.

Being involved as I was in the Multibreed Teamof the Year (a new Award), I was gutted for myown team who came second. Just twenty onepoints behind, one good run from one dog, oneless light, that’s how close it was. Having workedso hard to beat them, I have nothing butadmiration for the winners, the Fylde Coasters, well deserving of the accolade. I am glad to seethe first ever Award go to them, a very goodyear for the Team who also gained other AnnualAwards for individual dogs. Well done!

I cannot mention the Multibreed without againsaying ‘Well Done’ to the Pennant’s Pack on theirfastest ever UK Multibreed time. I would also liketo thank Neil Meeking, who, at Manchester, judged the two Divisions of Multibreed with apassion, humour and such animation even whenthe going got a bit tough (as it does at times). An example to all of us on how to judge well, earning respect in difficult circumstances. What aneleventh hour win for the Greetland Grasshoppersin the ‘John Beswick’ Championship!

Well done to the Team of the Year, The WolfPack, well deserved. With Ray & Edith gettingtheir Gold Awards in Wales, they have had agood year’s racing. I have really enjoyedcompeting against them, in the end theyhave the accolade they deserve.

The PODS Anglesey week was a resoundingsuccess, well done and thanks for the first everweek long meeting. We appreciate all your hardwork (if not the SUMMER weather)!! As indeed,we are grateful to all the Teams and Memberswho put so much effort into our sport. The PODShave won the 2002 BFA Special Award, a justreward for all the time and energy they put into Flyball.

We are currently in negotiations with ‘Butcher’s’to sponsor the Summer Championship for 2003.So look out for opportunities that may come yourway this year.

The BFA Committee would like to CONGRATULATEall those gaining Trophies etc. in the AnnualAwards and say Thank You very much to thosewho did not, but keep on trying.

When I first accepted the position of Chairmanit was a turbulent time for Flyball and it wasmuted that no-one should hold the position forlonger than four years and as I will soon becompleting my fourth year this will be my last‘Chairman’s Slot’. I would like to thank everyone who has helped the Committee and myselfduring this period, it has not been easy at times.Too many to name, but much gratitude is owed.

I wish the next Chairperson all the best and believethey will find the BFA in a very good position fromwhich to take the BFA further on, although,as usual, there is still much work to be done.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONEYou are being greeted by a very happy Editor. When I received the results of the 2002 AnnualAwards to enter into this issue, I was ‘over themoon’ to discover my Rogan was ‘Flyball Dog ofthe Year’. A complete surprise, (I’m too busy toperuse our ‘points site’ on the web, sorry Mo).

Another reason to feel pleased was a letterreceived via Graham (our Secretary). Whenapplying for renewal membership, these fewkind words accompanied the fee – "Just wantedto say that this is the best value I’ve ever hadin my life. Most of us members do value andappreciate our hard-working Committee and Idon’t know anyone who doesn’t devour theirFlyball Record with great relish the minute itlands! "Thank you for a terrific organisation with ever improving facilities."

Thanks for your thanks Maria, (Maria Brennan,Flying Colours), makes it all seem worthwhile.

Something you will already be noticing is thatthe PODS, together with the Committee, are innegotiation with Butcher’s Pet Food for theirSponsorship.

This joint venture begins with a special editionof the Flyball Record. We are hoping this will be the beginning of a long and rewardingassociation, combining together to promote bothour growing sport of flyball and an established, successful, British company who are launchinga new and exciting product range.

Looking forward to all parties getting greatbenefit from this partnership.

ED.

As I sit here on this January day, looking at thegrey sky and rain, it reminds me of happier dayslast year in Anglesey.

The Shooting Stars left Folkestone and venturednorth. The scouting party left on Tuesday andbegan to prepare the ground for those who wereto follow. Jason cut the grass, Keith and Rogerplumbed in the water. They painstakingly spenthours painting white crosses on the ground toindicate the correct spacing and positioning forthe tent and caravan pitches...they were ignored! The rest of us followed a few days later, arrivingjust in time to see who won Big Brother.Amongst our group were six children under six,and three babies.

On the Saturday, we took the children and dogsto the beautiful beach nearby. That evening a fewdrinks were had and a few Mad Mutts andShooting Stars stayed up to the early hours to putthe world to rights.

The next day was our first day of racing, what wehad all come for. It was a fantastic day, we hadthe chance to learn some of the ring party skillsand Keith was even brave enough to Judge. Someof our younger members learnt how far washingup liquid and crisps could be spread around a tentand some of our older members just nursedhangovers, but nothing got in the way of awonderful day of Flyball.

Allegedly a Mad Mutt hid one of our dogs thatDebbie was looking after whilst she visited thefabulous portaloos...Debbie still hasn’t got overthinking she’d lost someone else’s dog!

Monday was a day of rest, rain and recuperation.A lovely BBQ was provided and it was a greatchance to socialise. I believe a gazebo nearlyblew away that night, but the wet weather couldnot dampen the Flyball spirit and racingcontinued over the next few days.

Some of our party decided to leave onWednesday night and two of their children gotimpatient whilst their parents packed. Thechildren decided to start the car themselves witha plastic chip fork. Unfortunately it got stuck inthe ignition.…. Their parents, to put it mildlywere not happy, the steering wheel wasdismantled, reassembled and the fork waseventually melted out.

The rest of our party left before the rain becametoo torrential, although Keith stayed and towedsome vehicles out of the mud before he headedfor home.

Everyone had a wonderful time and it was afantastic experience, but it was good to see blueskies when we made it back "down south".

We read in the last Flyball Record that there isanother team called Shooting Stars fromFelixstowe, apparently they were in Wales butmust have avoided us! If you see them tell themwere looking for them as they’ve nicked ourname!!

JUDGES REPORTDUNDEE 17TH & 18TH AUGUST 2002

JOHN IRVINGIt was with deep regret that we received the tragic news of the death of John Irving. His wife Ann and daughter Joanne are BFA members and run with the Crazy Cannons.

Our sincere sympathy goes to them both at this very sad time.

Lady - 25/08/97 - 01/01/03On a sad note. Tina & Andy Foster had to make the difficult decision on having Lady put to

sleep after a short illness. Although scatty and hard working, Lady will be remembered for herenthusiasm at both Flyball and Agility. From All the Bassett Allsorts

As part of the ‘Clatto Clangers’ Flyball Club, AlisonMoyes and I were very nervous at holding our firstever Tournament at Camperdown Park, Dundee inAugust. Needless to say, neither of us slept thenight before the event and forgot ‘WeightWatchers’ as the stress of hosting a Tournament isa great way to lose weight quickly!

Fortunately however, we need not have worriedas the event went fairly smoothly and even thesun shone on us throughout the Saturday, whichwas an achievement in itself given the wetsummer we had this year.

A total of seven teams entered the show – onebeing our own ‘Junior’ team, consisting entirely ofour younger members who ran their cotton socksoff and put up strong opposition for some of theadult teams. Watch out for them next year (weare so proud of them)!

We’d like to say a special Big Thank You to everyone

who helped at the show, especially to those whojourneyed from south of the border, namely, TheNorthern Bytes and Wakefield Tykes. They gave usthe wealth of their knowledge and experience andwithout their help things wouldn’t have run assmoothly and efficiently as they did. Theseaforementioned clubs were also a big help to ourjunior team, especially with regard to training underthe ‘traffic light’ system which was all new to them.

The Tournament was run as a two day event withan Open Class on Saturday and Starters on Sunday.

Finally, we must thank our Head Judge, ‘Alison Booth’who gave us help and support throughout the wholeweekend and guided me through my first judgingappointment – again Alison, many thanks.

To those Teams who didn’t attend this year – welook forward to meeting you all at our summershow 2003 as it will be bigger and better.

4.4 LayoutThe minimum area required for two regulationlanes is approximately 30’x 90’. There shall betwo racing lanes set not less than 12’ and notmore than 20’ apart from centre line to centreline. In cases of racing lanes being placed on hardsurfaces or carpet (such as indoor/outdoor carpetwhere rug burns are possible) each racing laneshall be matted at a minimum 4 _’ on either sideof the racing lane centre line, for the length ofthe racing lane leading up to the first jump andan area from the last jump to the backstops.

Where sod, dirt, grass or similar surfaces areavailable matting shall not be required. The lengthof the racing lane shall include an area not lessthan 29’ leading up to the start/finish line and anarea behind the Flyball box and in front of thebackstops of not less than 7’ beyond the frontedge of the Flyball box. Tournament Organisersshould endeavour to find flat ground. If the groundhas an obvious incline, the Tournament Organisermust arrange racing lanes to ensure that the dogsrun ‘uphill’ to the box rather than ‘downhill’.

4.5 SeedingTeams should be seeded based on theinformation supplied by the Records and StatisticsCo-ordinator. Seeding times for a tournament willbe based on the fastest time recorded by a teamduring the last 3 sanctioned events prior to theclosing date for entries. Any time recorded more

than 4 months before this date is null & void.A declared time, to be used as the seeding time, may be submitted by the Team Captain at least10 days prior to the Tournament, to beaccompanied by a written justification for thechange which may be referred to the committee.

NOTE: Only BFA Registered Teams will be officiallyseeded. Non BFA Registered Teams may enter aSanctioned Tournament at the discretion of theTournament Organiser if there are placesavailable not filled by Registered Teams and beseeded by declared time. Any such non-registered teams shall run ‘Not for Competition’.

Apologies to all those that know the rule bookoff by heart, the following poser is just for you.

Question: What is the maximum number of legs(with feet or paws on) that you can have in aFlyball Ring??

Answer: Too many to count, I’m thinking of prizegiving time when everyone and their dogs are allover the place.

If you’re disappointed with this because you’vejust spent half an hour working out your answer, put it on a piece of paper with an explanationand give it to me next time you see me. If weget some interesting variations we’ll put themin the next issue.

NEIL MEEKING (PODS)

RULES TO REMEMBER –WE WILL BE TESTING YOU LATER.

Hi there fellow Flyball fans, I’ll start by introducingmyself. I’m Ellie and I live with Cracker who wroteabout me last year as ‘that black thing’ or somethingequally uncomplimentary! I thought one of us hadbetter put pen to paper as Cracker hasn’t writtenanything for six months. Mind you, she was poorlyin the summer with surgery to her throat and she isalmost six and three quarters so maybe she thinksshe’s past it. Anyway you’ve got me instead.

Before I came to live here I had another home, but one day I was taken to some kennels and putinto quite a small area with bars round it and twohuge dogs for company. I waited and waited butmy owners never came back. I did wonder whythey made so much fuss of me when they left.Anyway Mum as I now know her walked pastwith Aunty Jane and they took me out to get aproper look. Aunty Jane was looking for ahousemate for Spud and Mum had gone along forthe ride - ha, ha. Even though I put everythinginto that first impression they left and Aunty Janepicked Tatty from an R.S.P.C.A. kennel.

However, I willed Mum to come back for me andshe did and took me to my new home. This wasliving. I had two big sisters Cracker and Tess, whoare quite old and three humans, Sue, Carrie andJamie. Carrie doesn’t live here much becauseshe’s joined the Air Force, whatever that is andJamie uses the house like a hotel or so Mum says.I love them all and I just know they love me.

Within a few days their secure enclosed gardenhad to have height extensions to the fence – byreason of yours truly. I’ve joined in at Flyball andcompeted as a starter but I’m sorry guys I think Iprefer Agility. The joy of whizzing through tunnelsand the feeling as I survey the world from thetop of an A Frame, bliss!

Now look at me rambling on, I’ll close but watchthis space……… I’ll be back.

ELLIE (Sue Blyth, Flying Colours)

Practice Ring for dogs who are not running.Flyball & Agility Equipment available for practice.(Dogs new to kit under trainers supervision only.)

Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd August are the dates of the Northern Bytes TournamentTeams may wish to travel to that venue on the Friday afternoon.

When people enquired about training and keptsaying things like "I would really like to try flyball butit is only for collies" something had to be done. Sincethe maximum jump height had been lowered therewere more and more teams of collies and the heightdogs appeared to be redundant. So it was decided totry and create more interest and more competitionswhere breeds other than collies would be welcome(and of course they are a necessity in multibreed).

There were not many Multibreed competitionsbut what if there was a new championship ????

So the John Beswick Multibreed Championship wasborn. There were many discussions about how toencourage teams to enter and make sure it wasnot just a one race wonder. Encouragement wasalso given to try and produce the fastest possiblecompetitive racing. The decision was made – a setof three tournaments in a year where teams thattook part received points for entering (30), places(100 for 1st , 95 for 2nd , etc) and times (50 forfastest, 48 next fastest etc). The pinnacle ofwinning the Championship each year was a mostmagnificent trophy and everyone who took part

received a John Beswick medal.

The John Beswick Championship set to run for threeyears beginning 2001 and the final one being 2003.In 2002 each heat was held by different teams, onein Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Cheshire.

The competition has produced over the last twoyears, extremely competitive racing but with avery friendly atmosphere. As the heats progressedmore teams entered with the last heat of 2002being split into two divisions. This is what thechampionship was all about – getting more teamsactively looking for and training other breeds totake part in our exciting sport. Now thanks tooffers of host teams, the heats will be in thenorth, midlands and south of England.

In 2003 the first heat will be held at Selby GameFair in April, thanks to the Yorkshire Bouncers andthe subsequent heats hopefully in Essex (May)and Leicestershire hosted by the Mad Mutts andNuneaton Flyers (final confirmation awaited –Pam if you are reading this please confirm)!

Just when we thought our season was over forthe year, the Nuneaton Flyers came up with thisTournament within our travelling limits. Yes, ofcourse we will go, and being a limited event wevery quickly entered two teams. A phone callcame from Pam asking me to judge.

Newark Showground, the venue and a brandspanking new toilet block within 100 yards ofthe indoor arena, a great improvement.

Such was the popularity of this event that Iunderstand lots of entries had to be turnedaway. As it was an extra Division was put on,making it Five Divisions in all. Six teams in thefirst three and five teams in the last two.

Racing got started at 9.30am with Division Fivethen Four, Three, Two and One. The lights startedplaying up a little which was unusual for indoors, this led to delays and racing finished around6.30pm.

I was asked to Judge Division Two which thePODlings took by storm, only losing one heat totheir nearest rivals the Dodgers. Most of thisDivision’s racing ended up with one teamwinning all three heats, there were no, what Icall close races. Nuneaton Bees finished third, followed by the Lincolnshire Leapers who hadVanessa and Roo as their lead dog. The dog had

no problems but Vanessa is in need of somestart light practice as she invariably got severalreds (keeps your dog fit Vanessa). Bringing upthe rear were the Northern Bytes and belowthem the only team they managed to beat, the Sheffield Sprinters.

Thanks to the Nuneaton Flyers for another greatTournament, we appreciate all the hard workthat goes into the organising and we all lookforward to attending your events in the future.

Neil Meeking was Head Judge and before theAwards were presented he said a few words andasked for a ‘two minutes’ silence to remembereveryone’s friend, Claire (Mad Mutts), who hadsadly passed away the previous evening.

On a personal note I would like to say on behalfof Jackie, myself and all the GreetlandGrasshopper Flyball Club that Claire became adear friend to us all and would often visit our‘camp’ for a chat at Tournaments. Claire was agreat ambassador to the sport of Flyball with herenthusiasm and zest and she made a brilliantbox loader. She will be sadly missed by all whoshe came into contact with. Our hearts go out toMo, Roy, Sue, Rob and the rest of their family atthis sad time.

Possibly the nearest most of us will ever get to racing our American (NAFA) cousins. The venue isacross the water and to the west of England.

It’s always icy cold, it may not be snowing but there is always the threat of snow in the sky. If you couldsee the mountain, usually impossible because of the low cloud base, it’s called Snow---.

They speak a strange language on these far away shores, with villages called Gwyliwchy Stepiau, andCatalog Ar Gael Yn Swyddfa’r Sioe-80c.

Guessed it yet

There is a strange collection of people there, well that’s what non-flyballers usually think, but theseare wearing elf like head gear.

Yes! It was the PODs Christmas Tournament at the Anglesey Showground

Thanks from the PODs and our friends at Butchers Pet Food, to all the helpers & competitors. Hope youall had a really good Christmas.

Rub me the right wayand watch me respond. I will be at the front door

when you get home from work, wearing onlywhat nature gave me. Kiss me and I’m yours.

Call XXX-XXXXXXX and ask for Daisy.

MARKET HARBOROUGH RESULTS – 18TH JANUARY 2003

MARKET HARBOROUGH RESULTS –19TH JANUARY 2003

I kept seeing Christmas trees and with the brightblue from the Butchers Banners it reminded me ofthe festive season and you almost wore out thesprings on the yellow pegs – that’s how fierce thecompetition was. By the second half everyone hadsettled down to some really great racing withgasping change-overs, without so many lights.

Congratulations to the Melton Rovers forsweeping the board and going into First Placewith the PODsters a creditable Second. NuneatonFlyers win the prize for the least number of lightsin the whole competition (and normally get theprize for the most) a great Third position. Bristol

Ball-istics ran some good races, entertaining us asalways and well done to the PODlings a credibleFifth with a couple of very nervous handlers. Lastbut no way least was the up and coming Snatch‘n’ Grab, still on the learning curve. A specialmention to their young Box Loader, "You did yourbest to tell Jeff that Tilly had a ball in her mouthas the race was about to start, (but being TeamCaptain – he wasn’t listening) and what chaosthat caused!!

Thanks to you all for a great competition.

What a start to the new year. The Teams in thisDivision were well behaved, courteous and full ofexcitement. The Barkshire Bandidos were in topform winning all their heats. Yorkshire Bouncersmoved from sixth seed to second place onlylosing to the Bandidos. Excellent teamwork inaction, they kept their nerve and were the teamof the Division for me.

The Killa Bytes held their own in third place tothe new dogs in PODextras who gave fun andexcitement to the day. Extra Pack and Wolverinesworked hard to run two teams in one Division, but still managed to have a good day introducingnew dogs to their successful teams.

The morning session went through very smoothly,so feeling relaxed and confident we started theafternoon racing. However, during their breaksome of the dogs had developed a strangeaffinity to the ‘inside’ tower of the lights on thered lane, which caused some stoppages for re-alignment. My thanks to the teams for theirpatience and cheerfulness whilst waiting.

The Break Aways managed a steep learningcurve, improving all the time and coming throughto win their first red rosette by beating the Giga

Bytes (who had the fastest time of the day) intosecond place. Nova Next Generation had someunexpected running order problems with theirdogs and a reluctant runner, but remaining calm, the handlers finally got it all together. TheYorkshire Racers very fast last dog was impressivebut wasn’t always quite able to catch up.

All in all a good, fun days racing. I certainlyenjoyed judging, thank you everyone.

Butcher’s have teamed up with WarwickshireCountry Parks to encourage dog owners to adopta healthy lifestyle in 2003.

The new partnership is designed to promoteexercise and fitness as part of a responsible dogownership programme.

To launch the partnership, a new informationleaflet has been produced, which gives details ondog walking in Warwickshire’s eight country parks

and picnic areas, as well as fitness tips for pets.

Northamptonshire are planning something similarand a number of other regions are expected tofollow on.

As part of this new relationship, WarwickshireParks are happy to host flyball events, which they feel is another positive way ofencouraging fitness. All ideas are welcome.

Watch out for a new Flyball game, whichButcher’s are launching at Crufts.

The fast paced, interactive game is aimed atchildren and adults alike, putting you in control ofa team of Butcher’s sponsored dogs, relay racingagainst the clock.

The idea is to control your dog along the courseand over the four hurdles – drop the quoits andyou’ll lose crucial points and seconds, run over or

jump to catch cans and your dog will get a bionicburst of speed or super-spring jump.

You can record your best score, forward the gameonto friends to challenge them to beat your timeand even set up your own leagues.

The game will be available from the Butcher’swebsite – www.butcherspetcare.com -from 6 March. Watch this space for more details.
