Jennie-O Turkey Store barn fire in rural Dodge Center
On Friday June 15, 2012 at about 04:20 AM, the DodgeCounty Sheriff’s Office received a “911” call of a structurefire at 58184 State Highway 56, Dodge Center. An employeeat the turkey farm spotted fire in the building and called theSheriff’s Office. The West Concord Fire Department respond-ed and requested assistance from Claremont, Dodge Centerand Mantorville Fire Departments to fight the fire. The DodgeCounty Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
The fire appeared to have started in the egg building at theJennie-O Turkey Store farm. This building is connected toturkey barns by enclosed walkways. The fire rapidly spreaddown the walkway towards the turkey barns. With the rapidresponse of all the fire departments, they were able to containthe fire before it spread to the large turkey barns. Due to thehard work of the fire departments, the structural loss was heldto a minimum along with the loss of turkeys. It is estimatedthat less than 200 turkeys were lost. The approximate dollarloss caused by the fire is $250,000.00. The State Fire Marshallwas contacted and is investigating the cause of the fire. Thesheriff’s office believes that lightning was the possible causeof the fire at this time.

Dodge County recycling drop boxesare not a dump!
24 Hour recycling drop box services are provided toDodge County residents at Gate C of the recycling centerbetween Kasson and Mantorville and at other locationsaround the county. THESE SITES ARE FOR RECY-CLABLE PAPER, CARDBOARD, PLASTIC ANDGLASS BOTTLES AND TIN/ALUMINUM CANSONLY! Recently a lot of trash has been found in the “card-board only” container - items such as styrofoam, wood, sheetrock, and plastic film. Recyclables are sold at marketrate to a materials recovery facility and when loads get cont-aminated with garbage - it is harder to sort and more costlyto process for everyone. Please notify Dodge County Envi-ronmental Services with the identification of anybody drop-ping off waste materials other than recyclable items so wecan inform them of proper recycling. Continued use of recy-cling drop-off sites as a dumping location may lead to theremoval of this recycling service. For a full list of what isrecyclable and how to prepare it please read the signs at thedrop-off site and on the bins.
Another area of concern is the trash receptacle that islocated just outside the recycling center along the bike trail. It is often overflowing with household trash. This bin is forthe incidental garbage that is picked up along the trail. Allhousehold trash, if you do not have a garbage hauler, shouldbe delivered to the transfer station between regular businesshours of Monday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 8a.m. - 3 p.m., and Saturdays 8 a.m. to Noon.

Danielle Schmitz isthe second genera-tion of Daniel'sRestaurant andNorthwood's Lounge. In 1977 Danielle'sfather, Dan Gadient, purchased theBoston Cafe locatedon Main StreetKasson next to theMini Mall. In 2001Daniel's moved outto their current loca-tion in Daniel's Plazaon south MantorvilleAvenue where theycontinue their tradi-tion of serving home-made goodness.
Danielle literallygrew up in the business. A large part of theDaniel's business is selling fish and chips alongwith other offerings at area fairs and communitycelebrations. She has fond childhood memories ofattending these events which for Danielle andolder sisters Katie and Natalie were a blend ofwork and play while growing up. Filling the tartarsauce cups was followed by a ride on the Tilt-a-whirl. She even met oneof her best friends dur-ing this time period. This girl's family owneda shaved ice businessand she and Daniellebuilt their friendshipduring time spent atvarious summer events.Their families becamefriends as well sharingmany experiences both business and personal.
Danielle graduated from Kasson-MantorvilleHigh School in 2001 and attended school at NorthPark University in Chicago. Feeling like North Parkwas not the right fit, Danielle transferred to theUniversity of Wisconsin-Stout, enrolling in theirRestaurant and Tourism Management program.Having worked at Daniel’s practically her wholelife, the program felt somewhat redundant afterhaving had her dad as a real-life teacher in therestaurant business. She then enrolled atRochester Community and Technical College, lived in Rochester and worked at the OutbackSteakhouse, time Danielle says was well spent. "Idid the typical college student thing living andworking in Rochester. It was very good experiencefor me to work at a different restaurant. I learneda lot", Danielle shares reflecting on that time peri-od. She was still a bit ambivalent about her careerpath. Her "shaved ice friend" had moved toColorado to attend school and Danielle decided tomove there as well. She only lived in Boulder for a
month and a half but it was enough time forDanielle to realize she wanted to come back toMinnesota and work at Daniel's. "It seems silly butit was just the path I needed to take to realize I didwant to return", Danielle says a bit sheepishly.Nothing ventured, nothing gained and nowDanielle knew her decision.
One year after returning Danielle was engagedto Matt Schmitz who she had met at church whilein high school. Four months later the two weremarried in 2007 and are now the parents of twosons, Henry age 2, and Owen, six months old. Mattis the owner of Matthews Construction and grewup in Wasioja.
Danielle's working days are now filled with bak-ing breads and desserts along with the neededtasks to manage a restaurant. Her goal is to besuccessful in balancing the demands of a familyand a business. She strives to create a place wherepeople will want to both eat and work. "My dadand I are alike. We are both pretty relaxed as man-agers. I wouldn't want to work in a high stressenvironment and I don't think our employees doeither", Danielle says. "I want to create a placewhere people want to come".
And come they do as Daniel's has a steady sup-ply of loyal customersordering their long-time favorites from themenu. One thingDanielle would likepatrons to know is theemphasis is on home-made at Daniel'swhether it be bread, buns, pastries, soup, salad dressings, ordesserts, it is all pre-pared from scratch inthe Daniel's kitchen. They offer gluten freemenu items as well aslow-cal choices withtheir newly added sal-ads. They know better than to change their coremenu, but do keep it fresh with new menu choices.
Changing, and yet staying the same. Danielle isglad her path led her back to the restaurant herparents started before she was born. Back tohomemade goodness and a welcoming atmos-phere Danielle is happy to help make happen.Stop by on a Friday for their fish special or on aSaturday evening for prime rib or try the Sundaybrunch or for that matter any meal, any day of theweek. Homemade goodness waiting for you atDaniel's, compliments of Danielle.

Teamwork. Thisapproach has helpedAnnette to be successfulas a realtor. Annette isone half of The MeirickTeam selling real estatefor Edina Realty. Having ateam approach to buyingand selling real estatebenefits the seller, buyerand agent.
Annette has worked inreal estate full time forten years but had to wait
to pursue her career. She grew up in a small townlocated between Albany and New York City, NY. "Iblame my parents for my interest in real estate",Annette smiles. While growing up her familymoved numerous times and looking at housessparked an early interest in real estate forAnnette. Upon high school graduation Annettewas eager to become an agent only to be told by areal estate company that not being a homeownerwould prevent her from selling real estate. For thenext few years Annette spent time working at var-ious jobs. When her children got older she decidedto pursue her original interest. Living in the K-Marea she approached Faye Bigelow, then owner ofBigelow Realty, and Faye in her customary wayguided Annette through the process of becominga realtor.
Annette worked at Bigelow Realty for a fewyears and when Faye retired Annette went toColdwell Banker Burnett. At this time Tim neededan assistant and the job suited Annette. They wereboth living in the Kasson-Mantorville area and itmade sense for them to handle transactions in thisarea. This past May they marked five years withEdina Realty having started in the Kasson officeand are now working out of the Rochester office.
Generally both attend listing appointmentsso clients know both of them. They both showhomes and meet with clients on their own, butcover for each other if a schedule conflict arises.Annette handles most of the computer work and isquick to say communication is foremost. "We haveweekly meetings, a shared bulletin board andGoogle calendars linked to help us stay on top of
things", explains Annette. "It is really nice to havesomeone who can take care of things if one of us isgone or has a conflict".
Residential properties in the K-M and sur-rounding areas including Byron, Dodge Center,Hayfield, Pine Island, Oronoco, Stewartville,Rochester and West Concord are Annette's area ofexpertise. Some commercial transactions are con-ducted and Tim handles the farm properties."Often times we are dealing with people underless than ideal circumstances", shares Annette."Relocations, deaths, divorces and other life situa-tions can create the need for a property to bebought or sold. I try to make the process assmooth as possible, but it's not always easy".Annette's business has seen steady growth overthe last ten years and she now receives numerousreferrals and repeat business.
Annette especially enjoys helping peoplewith first time home purchases. "It's a huge invest-ment. The paperwork has increased in the tenyears I have been in real estate, but I do my bestto help them through the process making it as pos-itive as possible", says Annette. Annette perks upwhen asked about current rates. "Rates are greatright now. It is not always easy to get a loan, butfor those who qualify, the rates are terrific".Currently interest mortgage rates range between2.375 to 3.625 depending on the specifics of theloan. (For up to date info go to www.edinareal-ty.com/the-meirick-team )
