Bob has been influenced by divorces allhis life. No... not his, but everyone elses. His parents were divorced when he waseight. It was a mess. He lived with an auntfor a year till the courts decidedwhere he should go. Stayed withhis mother for a few years till themother remarried and the newhusband brought in two of hisown children to the new family. He now shifted between moth-er’s new family group and hisfather who had also remarriedand had a child from his newwife. As he grew he would bounce fromone family group to another depending onhow the marriages were going.

He survived somehow through schooland emerged as a computer analyst. He hasfound it soothing to work with computerproblems that made more sense than hishuman problems. He is now in his late 30sand has been in love many times.

Bob needs the comfort of sharing his lifebut he hasn’t yet gotten married. He haslived with three women and enjoyed relat-

ing until the word marriage came up. At that point the arrangements went from

living-in to living-out very quickly since“marriage” was not in his vocabulary. He

has always been glad that henever married any of his live-ins.They shared for awhile and arestill friends, no hassles, norecriminations... just parted asfriends.

A new record has been set withFrancine, his latest live-in.

They have been together a fewyears and now the thought of

marriage is starting to show up. He caresfor her and he might actually marry her. Then when the inevitable break up willcome, the divorce will most likely be a bigmess and no such thing as a friendlydivorce. And no pleasant parting.

Bob wants nice finishes. He wantsfriends, not enemies. Once again he wouldlose another friend.

After all he has seen, what other endingwould it be.

Just a horrible thought.

A Pilgrim is a person who travels toa sacred place.

A Pilgrimage is the journey the pil-grim makes. It is a journey to a nostalgicor sentimental place. It is a journey withemotional significance. It is undertakenfor a specific purpose. A considerableamount of time and distance is usuallyinvolved. It is a journey the individualfeels compelled to make accompanied bya very strong yearning.

There are ancillary benefits from apilgrimage to your past. It often brings amature understanding of who you wereand who you are now. You can see withadult eyes, your life and your relation-ships. You can see if your memories, your perceptions and your feelings holdup and whether or not they are true.Reliving and re-experiencing happy timescan confirm your identity and validatethose memories that it was a happy time

and place and you were happy. It is agood idea if you are feeling sad or disori-ented in life, to go back and look for pasthappiness. Things may not be as youremember them. The place may be goneor drastically changed but there is stillvalue in making the trip.

After a loss a pilgrimage can makethe bereaved feel closer to the departed.Part of your departed’s essence is stillthere. You are walking the streets thatyou walked together. You are seeing thepeople and places that you saw together. It can help the survivor to accept theirloss on a different level. It can bring clo-sure of a sort and serve as a final farewell.Although, temporarily, there may beincreased feelings of longing for theloved one and for the good times it can bepsychologically very healing.

People do not usually return to placesthat were unhappy or painful. However, these journeys can also bring closure andhealing. Sometimes, such a trip will allowthe individual to finally leave the pastbehind them and move forward.

According to historian Robert A. Caro(The Passage of Power), when LyndonJohnson became president on the assassi-nation of Kennedy on November 22, 1963,civil rights leaders had serious doubtsabout Johnson. Aside from his southernroots, was his “twenty-year record thatbegan with his arrival in Congress in 1937and lasted through 1956: a perfect 100%record of voting against every civil rightsbill that had ever made it to the floor, evenbills aimed at ending lynching.”

In 1957, however, Senate MajorityLeader Johnson had “rammed through thefirst civil rights bill since 1875 and anotherin 1960, however, both bills were weak, made meager advances toward social jus-tice and were regarded by liberals as merepolitical opportunism; an attempt to lessennorthern opposition to his presidential can-didacy.” Suddenly, President Johnson hadmore power and “it did not take him longto reveal what he wanted to do with it.”

As he prepared to deliver his firstmajor address as President beforeCongress on November 27, his close advi-sors warned not to emphasize civil rights,as “it would antagonize the southernerswho controlled Congress, whose supporthe needed for the rest of his presidency anda civil rights bill had no chance of passageanyway.” Kennedy’s effort in 1963 to passa civil rights act was totally blocked in a“logjam” by both a southern Democrat-Republican coalition and a conservativecoalition. Johnson “not only broke the con-gressional logjam, he broke it on civilrights.”

In his speech before Congress,Johnson invoked Kennedy’s name, stating,“No memorial oration or eulogy couldmore eloquently honor PresidentKennedy’s memory than the earliest possi-ble passage of the civil rights bill for whichhe fought so long. We have talked for onehundred years or more about equal rights. It is time now to write it in the books oflaw.” Johnson used every bit of strategy aswell tactics of which he was a master.

After a half year of struggle, led byJohnson, the civil rights bill was passed in1964. Johnson had demonstrated the “prag-matic potential in the American presidency.”

Cañas Tennis announces new program

for local Tennis enthusiastsMost people who buy houses in a home-

owners’ association understand the restric-tions in the community’s covenants andrestrictions, which allow associations tomaintain uniformity among the variousparcels. What some homeowners don’tknow is that if these covenants and restric-tions aren’t renewed within thirty years ofrecording, they may expire and becomeunenforceable.

The Marketable Record Title Act(“MRTA”) provides that a person who holdstitle to land for thirty (30) years or more hasrecord title to the land free and clear ofrestrictions and covenants. This means thatif homeowners’ associations do not takesteps to preserve their covenants and noother reinstatement of the restrictions andcovenants occur, homeowners can argue thatthe covenants are no longer enforceable.

According to Joshua Krut, a partner withWeiss Serota Helfman Pastoriza Cole &Boniske, MRTA creates potential problemsfor homeowners’ associations whose govern-ing documents are more than 30 years old.“Essentially, the homeowners’ associationcan be faced with the situation of homeown-

ers arguing that the association’s covenantsare no longer enforceable and have expired ifthe association does not take the appropriatesteps to protect their covenants ,” he said.

To preserve its covenants, Krut encour-ages associations to file a statutory “Noticeto Preserve” in the public records before thecovenants expire in accordance with Chapter720 of the Florida Statutes. If an associationfails to pursue the process described abovebefore the Covenant expires, the preserva-tion of the association’s covenants andrestrictions has the potential to become muchmore difficult.

It is important that homeowners’ associa-tions review the dates on their governingdocuments and amendments with their attor-neys in order to determine whether MRTApresents and issue for their association, saysKrut.

Joshua Krut is a Partner at Weiss SerotaHelfman Cole & Boniske, P.L., where heserves as Chairperson of the CommunityAssociation, Club & Resort Practice Group. The Firm has offices in Fort Lauderdale andCoral Gables and Mr. Krut can be reachedat 954.763.4242 or [email protected].

A new report by gerontologist KenDychtwald PhD, challenges the popularmyth that one’s current home is the bestoption to continue an active social life andstay connected during retirement years.

“The reality is that remaining in yourhome can result in growing isolation andloneliness in later life,” said Dychtwald, bestselling author of Age Wave. “Seniorliving options, like a continuing care retire-ment community (CCRC), offer opportuni-ties to create new friendships and socialconnections.”

Titled “Five Myths and Realities ofContinuing Care RetirementCommunities,” Age Wave’s report andresearch were commissioned by Vi, adeveloper of older adult living communi-ties, including Vi Aventura.

The Report stated, friendships and closesocial connections are an essential sourceof happiness, and people age 60 and overare most likely to cite “living family andfriends” as extremely important to theirhappiness – more important than money oreven health.

Yet, it is not uncommon for people whostay in their current home during retirementto find that their friends and family moveaway, and many can feel increasingly lonelyor isolated in their current home. Studiesshow that having low social interaction is asbad for your health as smoking fifteen ciga-rettes a day, is as dangerous as being analcoholic, is as harmful as never exercisingand is twice as dangerous as obesity.

Residents of CCRCs like Vi Aventurasay that it is the opportunity to meet, learnfrom, and engage in new activities withpositive, stimulating, like-minded peoplethat can make life brighter and fuller.

One interviewee said “the no. 1 benefit isthat you’re surrounded by successful, inter-esting people. You have a pretty goodchance of finding people who may make animpact on your life.”

CCRCs like Vi Aventura offer independ-ent living with a combination of a privateresidence, services, amenities and care.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque is agood-looking sport utility vehicle that isselling like those proverbial hotcakes in theU.S. market. American consumers appar-ently like this fuel-efficient SUV, the small-est and lightest one the company has everproduced.

Dubbed a premium compact, the Evoqueis a stylish vehicle with sporting looks andtypical Range Rover craftsmanship, luxury, performance, along with the legendary multi-terrain capability. It is offered in two models— coupe and five door — and in three trimlines — Pure, Prestige and Dynamic.

Evoque has bold exterior styling with asloping roofline and a relatively compactfootprint. On the inside, there’s a lot ofroom in both models and the five-door for-mat offers even more rear-seat space andpracticality.

Under the hood, there is a smooth andresponsive, four-cylinder gasoline engine.

Also available is an optional state-of-the-art240 bhp, 2.0-liter Si4 turbocharged engine. With twin variable valve timing and directinjection technology, it has six-cylinderpower and performance, but with four-cylinder fuel economy. With permanent all-wheel drive and an updated six-speed auto-matic transmission it delivers a 0-60 mphclocking in 7.1 seconds.

On the road, Evoque handles with agilityin any situation and, with AdaptiveDynamics with MagneRide, it has all-weather, multi-terrain capability. And thereis generous ground clearance, aggressivebreakover and departure angles to makeoff-road driving an enjoyable experience, enhanced by the latest version of RangeRover’s signature Terrain Response systemfor steep hill climbs or descents.

On the inside, the roomy interior of thefive-door Evoque was achieved withoutenlarging the footprint of the coupe; theoverall length and width are the same. Summer is really heatingup! As the temperaturesstart to rise, customerssometimes notice theirelectric bill rise as well.Fact is, the two are linked, but there are simple thingsyou can do to keep yourbill low during the summermonths.Weather is themain cause ofhigher electric billsAs outside temperatures

go up, your air conditionerworks longer to get the in-side temperature down to acomfortable temperature, causing an increase in en-ergy costs. In the summertime, air conditioning can account for half or more of electric bills, with outsidetemperatures directly affecting how often and how long systems must run tocool homes. How to keep your summer electric bill lowFPL customers have the lowest electric bill out of all 55 utilities in the state,

but it’s nice to know that you can make your bill even lower by using someenergy efficiency tricks to counter the effects of warmer weather. For example, did you know that for every one degree higher you set your indoor temperature, you can save about 5 percent on your monthly cooling costs?Check out these additional tips to help keep out excess light and heat:Shade window and glass doors that face east and west, as they are the most

prone to letting unwanted heat into your home. Consider shading those areaswith mature size plants (with proper distance away from power lines), awningsand window coverings.Weather stripping is an inexpensive solution to help reduce the amount of

air that enters or escapes your home through doors and windows. Types ofweather stripping include V-shaped vinyl, adhesive-backed foam, spring metaland door sweep.Caulking is another way to reduce unwanted airflow. It is only worthwhile

when done as part of another project. Use silicone or siliconized-acrylic caulkbecause they have the longest life span, work well on most surfaces and willmaintain their elasticity.Adding insulation to your home can help reduce heating and cooling costs.

Homes built after 1982 are required to have R-19 insulation, which is the levelwe recommend. However, if your home was built before 1982, you may benefitfrom adding insulation. For more tips and programs to help manage energy costs this summer, visit

It’s that time of yearagain – school’s out, nomore homework and chil-dren have lots of free timeto have fun.

But during summer, withthe constant outdoor play –

including water activities and, of course, the hot weather – parents should be extracautious about the hazards to their chil-dren’s safety. Here are some importantsafety tips that can help keep your childrenout of danger, and out of the emergencyroom.

WATER SAFETY• Never leave a child alone in the water

or near the water, not even for a minute toanswer the telephone. Children shouldswim only with adult supervision – even ifthey are good swimmers.

• Floatation devices and inflatable toysare just that – toys. They do not replaceadult supervision in the swimming pool, akiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes sec-onds for a child to drown. If you have abackyard pool or live on the water, youneed to have layers of protection to protectyour children. These include: window ordoor locks/alarms, self-latching pool fenc-ing; a Shepherd’s Crook or rescue ringshould be available, have a telephone near-by and post emergency numbers and youraddress by that telephone.

• No diving into the water – always go infeet first to protect the head and neck.

• Select swimming sites that have life-guards available. Never swim in unguardedlakes or canals because there may be manydangers lurking just beneath the surface ofthe water.

• Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR). Due to the time it may take forparamedics to arrive, CPR skills can makethe difference between life and death.

• If you see someone in trouble in thewater, “Throw Don’t Go.” Do not jump inany body of water to rescue someonebecause they may pull you under. Throwthem a rope or rescue ring.

BIKE SAFETY• Always wear a helmet when bike rid-

ing. It’s the law, and it can prevent headinjuries and even death from a bicycle acci-dent. Helmets and other safety gear shouldalso be worn when skateboarding, skating, riding scooters and ATVs.

• Stay in control, be predictable and do

not let more than one person ride a bike; notowing!

• Watch out for hazards, such as loosegravel, potholes, broken glass and stray dogs.

• Make sure your children wear brightcolors when biking. Teach them that justbecause they see the driver, that does notmean the driver sees them.

• Observe all signs, traffic lights andstreet and sidewalk markings; ride singlefile; and use a steady front white light, asteady red rear light as well as reflectorswhen riding after dark.

SUN PROTECTION • The sun is strongest between 11 a.m.

and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children outof direct sunlight during this time of day.

• Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 orhigher to all children over six months old –and reapply it every two hours or more ifswimming. Use sunscreen even whenyou’re in the shade.

• Children should drink plenty of fluids;they are susceptible to heat exhaustion anddehydration.

BUG BITE SAFETY • Keep your children safe from bug bites

by applying safe and effective insect repel-lents, such as those with DEET, citronellaand soybean oil to the outside of clothingand exposed skin.

• Never apply the repellent directly tochildren’s hands and faces. Rub it into theirnecks and ears, staying away from theirmouths and ears.

• Dusk and dawn are the worst times forbugs, so stay indoors during these times orwear long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Atlantic |Pacific Management (APM),one of South Florida’s premiere anddynamic property management companiescontinues to ensure its team of highlymotivated managers is kept abreast of thelatest industry operational trends to pro-vide optimum and productive levels ofexpertise and service to its clients.

For many Community AssociationBoard Members, the competitive bidsprocess with its detailed specifications forcompletion of large projects can be daunt-ing; especially with budget constraints.

APM property managers evaluate manyproject factors and are equipped to facili-tate the bidding process. The objective isto have a transparent and cost effective bidselection process with a clearly definedscope of work.

State law requires competitive biddingfor condominium projects that exceed 5%of the annual budget (including reserves).HOA requirements are the same, exceptthe threshold is 10%. State law does notmandate the Board accepts the lowest bidor the number of bids required for review.

APM managers understand the impor-tance of harnessing the expertise and skillof industry professionals when requiredfor significant construction or repair proj-ects as the scope of work may be highlycomplex and technical. Items for consid-eration are government requirements, project expenditure, scope of work, proj-ect completion time, and licenses, insur-ance and warranties.

Request for Proposals (RFPs) for smallprojects could be a simple letter. Morecomplex jobs with extensive specifica-tions require clearly defined details on theRFP, site meetings and a bids receipt dead-line, etc. Bids evaluation process requiresverification bids conform to the scope of

work, checking references for work suc-cess and complaints, comparison specifi-cations spreadsheet, projected completiontime and price, written recommendation ofthe successful bidder for final decision andNegotiation and preparation of contract.

If you’re trying to get in bet-ter shape, you probably alreadyknow what you should be doing –but here are some “Just Don’t DoIt!” pitfalls you definitely don’twant to derail your success: Don’t Bring Home the Bacon:Before indulging in BK’s new“Bacon Sundae” with a whopping510 calories, 61 g. sugar and 18 g.fat, try less fattening treats likeSkinny Cow ice creams, frozenyogurt or fruit pops – and if yousimply have to bring home thebacon, make it turkey bacon – amore healthful choice! Don’t Buy a Better Body: It’snot a lie that lipo and extremeweight loss programs are only“quick fix” solutions – but to achieve long-lasting fitness goals, “knowledge ispower.” Once you know how to keep yourmetabolism revving and get lean by eatinghealthful meals and snacks every three tofour hours; and start exercising at least afew times a week, instead of helping to payfor the surgeon’s Mercedes, the real payoffcan be becoming “fit for life!”Don’t Twist & Shout: Did you knowtwisting and side-bend motions holdingweights can develop your obliques andactually make your waist appear wider? And did you know that if you’re lifting soheavy that your shout-outs can be heardthroughout the city, you’re risking injury? To maximize your efforts in the gym, it’simportant to ensure you’re following themost effective fitness plan for your bodytype; not overdeveloping muscle groupsthat will detract rather than add to the aes-thetics of your physique; and lifting withproper form, which may require loweringweights to attain greater results. Don’t Go it Alone: Around New Year’s,gym memberships always increase – butthen motivation to keep coming back usu-ally decreases in just a few weeks. To helpmake the most of workouts, consider hiringa personal trainer and splitting the cost

with a friend who needs a little extra moti-vation too. You can also take group classeswith an inspiring instructor and lots ofother people with high-energy levels thatcan also help keep you going strong. Don’t Give Up: If you haven’t been ableto reach your goal weight and maintain it,it could be due to this triple whammy:Starvation, deprivation, and lack of moti-vation. According to Jorge Cruise, authorof The 3-Hour Diet – the book about eatingthe right foods every three hours to achieveweight loss goals - the biggest mistake youcan make when trying to lose weight is toskip meals.

“When you skip meals throughout theday your blood sugar plummets, causingyou to overeat - and when you overeat, yougain weight,” Cruise explains. “When youeat the right foods every three hours youwill not feel hungry. Why? Because you’llkeep your blood sugar level stable andkeep your appetite under control. Whenyou’re in control of your appetite, you’re incontrol of your weight.”

When you start liking the numbersyou’re seeing on the scale, odds are you’llbe motivated to keep on avoiding “JustDon’t Do It!” obstacles that just won’t stopyour fitness progress ever again!

BY DEBBIE MARTINEZDivorce Coach

I’ve been divorced forfour years and have ateenage son. I work free-lance, but my support ismy alimony. My con-cern is, should I go backto work during this diffi-

cult teenage time or should I stay home andtake advantage of my situation until I haveno other choice financially?

Returning to the work force “when youhave no other choice” will be too late. Ifyou are relying on alimony with no othermeans of support, I would invite you tocome up with a serious financial plan. Yes,teenage years can be challenging, but thoseyears also free you up because your child isbecoming independent. I do believe youcan be a responsible mom and continue toguide your son even if you work. You willhave some restructuring to do, but in theend you will have financial security. Onething to look at is whether your alimony ismodifiable. If you go back to work, canyour ex take you back to court to loweryour alimony and/or child support? If so,calculate if it is financially in your favor towork outside the home. Factor in what youwill make, what if anything you will lose ifthe alimony is modified, taxes, etc. Asmoms our priority is always our children, but you also have to take your future intoaccount. You’re not being selfish, you arebeing smart.

Financially, I am a disaster; I can’t seemto get a handle on my finances. I can’t fig-ure out why it’s so hard for me since I tookcare of all the finances when I was married.Any suggestions?

Since you managed the finances

before, it’s not a matter of knowing whatto pay or organizing your bills, it’s amatter of mindset; you are still living inthe old one. Maybe when you were mar-ried you could get manicures every twoweeks and belong to the country club orgo out to dinner twice a week. You needto step back and look at your budgetnow. Women get into trouble with theirfinances for many reasons. Perhaps theydon’t want to adjust their lifestyle ortheir kids put pressure on them to con-tinue with vacations as before and guiltsets in. Or, quite simply, they don’tknow how to live on a budget. The fig-ures you see in front of you are exactlywhat you have. No checkbook gremlinsare going to come at night and add zerosto your balance. Be honest about yoursituation now, as painful as reality maybe. It will save you tons of stress latercaused by debt.

NOTE TO SELFI am willing to let go of old ways that are

no longer to my benefit.

First and only radioactive diagnostic agentapproved for PET Imaging of a living brain

BY JOANNA PALMER

The Wien Center for Alzheimer’sDisease and Memory Disorders at MountSinai Medical Center in Miami Beach,Florida, was one of a select few sitesthroughout the country chosen to partici-pate in a clinical trial that resulted in theFDA approval of Amyvid. It is the first andonly diagnostic agent approved for PETimaging of a living brain in adults underevaluation for Alzheimer’s disease (AD)and other causes of cognitive decline.

Currently, only a brain autopsy at thetime of death can provide confirmation thatan individual suffered from Alzheimer’sdisease. However, Amyvid enables doctorsto make a more definitive diagnosis in liv-ing patients.

Amyvid, which is given through aninjection, binds to amyloid plaques – a hall-mark characteristic of Alzheimer’s – allow-ing the plaques to be detected using PETscan images of the brain. Amyloid plaquesare abnormal clumps of brain cells mixedwith beta-amyloid protein. A negativeAmyvid scan allows physicians to concludethat no amyloid plaques are present and, thus, rule out a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.

“This tool is extremely helpful tophysicians in ruling out AD as nationallyone in five patients who are initially diag-nosed with Alzheimer’s ultimately show nosigns of the disease in a brain autopsy,”stated Dr. Ranjan Duara, medical directorof The Wien Center at Mount Sinai. Dr.Duara, the principal site investigator for theclinical trial at Mount Sinai, served as thenational advisor for the design and interpre-tation of the overall study. The Wien Centeris also the home of the State of FloridaBrain Bank. As such, Dr. Duara’s team atMount Sinai also analyzed and processedall the brains in South Florida that were partof the clinical trial.

A positive scan indicates moderate tofrequent plaques are present, but does notestablish a diagnosis of AD; however, itdoes help physicians assess their patients by

serving as an adjunct to other diagnosticevaluations.

“As many as 30 percent of cognitivelynormal elderly people over the age of 70may have a positive scan. This means theymay be at an increased risk for developingAlzheimer’s disease,” said Duara. “That iswhy the development of Amyvid is a majoradvance in the battle against Alzheimer’s. Itallows us to potentially intervene beforesymptoms of the disease surface.”

Beginning June of 2012, a limitednumber of radiopharmacies will be distrib-uting Amyvid with increased distributiontoward the end of the year. Mount Sinaiwill potentially be one of the South Floridasites that will have Amyvid available as adiagnostic agent.
