1) Write the polynomial in standard form including any terms that have a zero coefficient.

2) Write the coefficients of the terms (including any that are zero). 3) Reverse the sign of the constant in the divisor.

4) Bring down the first coefficient.

5) Multiply the 1st coefficient by the new divisor (from step 3), write the product under the next coefficient and add.

6) Repeat steps 4-5 until a remainder is found (it might be zero)

Divide 3x3 - 4x2 + 2x - 1 by x + 1Synthetic Division Ex. 1

Use synthetic division to divide (5x3 - 6x2 + 4x - 1) by (x -3)

3x3 - 4x2 + 2x - 1

Now go back to Ex 2 and sub in 3

(evaluate the poly for x = 3)

(5x3 - 6x2 + 4x - 1)

Use Synthetic Division to find P(-4) for P(x) = x4 - 5x2 + 4x + 12

Ex. 3

Remainder Theorem: If you divide a polynomial by (x - a), the remainder of the quotient is equal to the value of the polynomial evaluated at a.

Since the remainder of 5x3 - 6x2 + 4x - 1 by (x - 3) was 92, 5x3 - 6x2 + 4x - 1 = 92 when x = 3.

The volume in cubic feet of a sarcophagus (excluding the cover) can be expressed as the product of its 3 dimensions.

The length is x + 4.  Find linear expressions with integer coefficients for the other dimensions.  Assume that the width > the ht.

Ex 4.

A sarcophagus is a work of art created to honor a loved one or someone famous. Sometimes they are decorated with elaborate inscriptions and ornaments.
