A PRAYER FOR PROTECTION

IN TIME OF PANDEMIC O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of

salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you,

Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in

Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O

loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are

confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Gali-

lee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine

Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those

who are vulnerable, and for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with protecting

the health and safety of others and for those who

are tending to the sick and seeking a cure. Help us,

O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of

the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who

took upon himself our sufferings and carried our

sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the

glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Moth-

er of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions,

but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious

and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Adapted from the prayer of Pope Francis

Purgatorio: Deep Cleansing Bathed In Mercy

This article is the second in a series of four that discusses the gift of mercy from God. In the first article, I

explored the importance of this gift as Dante traveled through Purgatory in his book Divine Comedy. In this

article, we will reflect more in depth on mercy, as he continues his travels through Purgatory.

One thing Dante notices is that prayers from those still living, assist the souls in shortening their stay in

Purgatory. The souls discover that they are dependent on the love of the human community on Earth. One

soul that Dante briefly conversed with expressed her regret in not partaking in the Sacrament of Reconcilia-

tion as often as she should have. Because of this, the debts she owed from her sins were greater. “Peace, I

desired peace with God only at the very end of my life; and my debt would have been reduced through pen-

ance.” She tells Dante, that no living soul in her family or friends prays for her. The only soul that does ex-

tend any comfort is a poor street vendor that resided outside of her home. She leans on his spirituality.

Through his acts of love and charity, she is brought relief. As Dante’s journey continues, he observes that

this place of suffering is also a place where final justice is served. In other words, the punishment fits the

crime. His angel begins to show him a variety of punishments that the souls must endure in order to purge

their debts. First Dante is told to observe a large group of souls whose crime was that they were lazy in

both their everyday and spiritual life and now justice is being served as they must ascend a steep jagged

mountain. Next he witnesses souls that were guilty of both laziness and pride. They must now carry enor-

mous rocks on their backs which forces their faces to stare at the ground, under the weight of the

rock. With every trembling step and as they fear their legs are about to give out under their burdened

backs, they cry out, “Piu non posso” (More I cannot). And yet, even in the midst of their pain, there emerges

a kind of deep recognition: at the very moment they feel they cannot do this anymore, somehow they find

that they can continue moving forward. These words become not so much a cry of despair; as an acknowl-

edgment that it is a tremendous spiritual penance for the proud and laziness. Also with every step that

they take, they are filled with such a strong desire for transformation and their hearts are filled with pray-

er. Despite Dante’s urge to assist in their burdens, his angel instructs that they must leave. Their travels

take them to the area in Purgatory where resides those souls guilty of being envious of others. These souls

are covered in rough sackcloth and because they are also struck blind, each one must bore up another with

his shoulder and their heads must rest onto another. Without the support of each other, they cannot move

forward with their transformation. They realize the weakness they had caused people to suffer in their lives,

through their envious actions, they are now forced to experience the same. They fully understand that envy

is the devils way of having an individual find displeasure at another’s good. Dante’s angel must remind

him that purgatory is a place of personal responsibility. The souls are here because it is their fault. The

souls abused their gift of free will and did not partake of the sacrament of Reconciliation. He further ex-

plains that is why many souls can be heard chanting out loud, “Agnus Dei”. God has ordained our earthly

lives as being the time of mercy when the process of purgation begins. God freely gives us His grace to puri-

fy and transform us and, as this grace increases within our soul, we are being increasingly renewed and

perfected. However, for those of us who die in a state of grace but not yet made perfect, God has given us

the great gift of purgatory because of His merciful love. It is in purgatory where men can be made holy and

enabled to enter Heaven to be in the presence of God. –Sherrie Clutts DRE
