  • "Sailing" by Christopher Cross

Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for meAnd if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquilityOh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and seeBelieve me

It's not far to never-never land, no reason to pretendAnd if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence againOh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and seeBelieve me

Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could beJust a dream and the wind to carry meAnd soon I will be free

Fantasy, it gets the best of meWhen I'm sailingAll caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphonyWon't you believe me?

Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could beJust a dream and the wind to carry meAnd soon I will be free

Well it's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for meAnd if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenityOh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and seeBelieve me

Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could beJust a dream and the wind to carry meAnd soon I will be free

  • Knowing how to tie a few basic knots is essential to a boater's security. The art of knot tying isknown as "Marlinspike." Good sailors take pride in their ability to chose and tie knots. Below are7 Basic Knots you should know....If you master these knots, you'll be way ahead of mostrecreational boaters in your knowledge of marlinespike. For practice, a section of rope six feetlong with a diameter of 3/8" is a good size. Tie each knot several times to make a mental pictureof the sequence. With practice you'll be able to tie each knot without thinking about it.

NOTE: The end of the line that you work with in tying knots is called the "Bitter End." The mainlength of line is the "Standing Part."

the end down through the loop. This is a half hitch.3. Repeat on long rope below first half hitch and draw up tight.

    Bowline

This knot doesn't jam or slip when tied properly. To tie:

    3. Draw up tight.

This knot is ideal for keeping the end of a rope from running out of tackle orpulley. To tie:

    Boating Knots

Round Turn and Two Half Hitches

This reliable knot is quickly tied and is the hitch most often used inmooring or when you need a Knot that can grip something. To tie:

    1. Pass end of rope one full turn around post or other object.2. Wrap short end of rope under and over long part of rope, pushing

    The Double Overhand Stopper Knot

    1. Make the overhand loop with the end held toward you, then pass endthrough loop.

    2. Now pass end up behind the standing part, then down through theloop again.

    1. Make underhand loop, bringing end around and over the standing part.2. Pass end under, then up through the loop.3. Draw up tight.

  • To tie:

    2. Draw up tight.

This knot is the "general utility" hitch for when you need a quick, simplemethod of fastening a rope around a post, spar or stake. To tie:

    Cleat Hitch

In order to secure the boat to a dock or secure a line to the boat you willprobably use the cleat hitch.

    Square Knot

This knot is used at sea in reefing and furling sails.

    1. Pass left and over and under right end. Curve what is now the left end toward the right and cross what is now the right end over and under the left.

    The Clove Hitch

    1. Make a turn with the rope around the object and over itself.2. Take a second turn with the rope around the object.3. Pull the end up under the second turn so it is between the rope and the object. Tighten bypulling on both ends.

    1. Take the line to the ear of the cleat furthest from where the linecomes from the boat (or load).

    2. Take one wrap around the base of the cleat and then start a figure eight across the top of the opposite ear.

    3. Finish with a half hitch turned under so that the line is coming away from the cleat in the opposite direction from which it came in.

    Part A – General Rules

    3. General Definitions(b) The term "power-driven vessel" means any vessel propelled by machinery.

    (c) The term "sailing vessel" means any vessel under sail provided that propellingmachinery, if fitted, is not being used.(d) The term "vessel engaged in fishing" means any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls or other fishing apparatus which restrict maneuverability, but does not include avessel fishing with trolling lines or other fishing apparatus which do not restrictmaneuverability.(e) The word "seaplane" includes any aircraft designed to maneuver on the water.(f) The term "vessel not under command" means a vessel which through someexceptional circumstance is unable to maneuver as required by these Rules and istherefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel.(g) The term "vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver" means a vessel whichfrom the nature of her work is restricted in her ability to maneuver as required by theseRules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel. The term"vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver" shall include but not be limited to:

    (i) a vessel engaged in laying, servicing, or picking up a navigation mark, submarine cable orpipeline;

(ii) a vessel engaged in dredging, surveying or underwater operations; (iii) a vessel engaged in replenishment or transferring persons, provisions or cargo while underway; (iv) a vessel engaged in the launching or recovery of aircraft; (v) a vessel engaged in mine clearance operations; (vi) a vessel engaged in a towing operation such as severely restricts the towing vessel and her tow

in their ability to deviate from their course.

    18. Responsibilities between vessels1. Overtaken2. Not Under Command3. Restricted in her Ability to Maneuver4. Constrained by Draft5. Engaged in Fishing6. Sailing Vessel7. Power Vessel8. Seaplane

REMEMBER: Only New Reels Catch Fish So Purchase Some

    (h) The term "vessel constrained by her draught" means a power-driven vesselwhich, because of her draught in relation to the available depth and width of navigablewater, is severely restricted in her ability to deviate from the course she is following.

  • Part B – Steering and Sailing Rules

Section I (Conduct of vessel in any condition of visibility)

    5. Look-out

Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well asby all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so asto make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

    6. Safe speedEvery vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper andeffective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to theprevailing circumstances and conditions. In determining a safe speed the followingfactors shall be among those taken into account:

the state of visibility; (ii) the traffic density including concentrations of fishing vessels or any other vessels; (iii) the maneuverability of the vessel with special reference to stopping distance and turning

ability in the prevailing conditions; (iv) at night the presence of background light such as from shore lights or from back scatter of

her own lights; (v) the state of wind, sea and current, and the proximity of navigational hazards; (vi) the draught in relation to the available depth of water.

    7. Risk of collisionVessels must use all available means to determine the risk of a collision, including theuse of radar (if available) to get early warning of the risk of collision by radar plotting orequivalent systematic observation of detected objects. (e.g. ARPA, AIS).

REMEMBER: Bearing constant, range decreasing indicates a risk of collision!

    8. Action to avoid collisionActions taken to avoid collision should be:

positive obvious made in good time.

  • Section II (Conduct of vessels in sight of one another)

    12. Sailing vesselsTwo sailing vessels approaching one another must give-way as follows:

Port gives way to starboard. When each has the wind on a different side, thevessel which has the wind to port must give way.

Windward gives way to leeward. When both have the wind on the same side, the vessel which is windward must give way to the vessel which is leeward.

    13. OvertakingAny vessel overtaking any other vessel must keep out of the way of the vessel beingovertaken.

    14. Head-on situationsWhen two power-driven vessels are meeting head-on both must alter course tostarboard so that they pass on the port side of the other.

    15. Crossing situationsWhen two power-driven vessels are crossing, the vessel which has the other on thestarboard side must give way and avoid crossing ahead of her.The saying is "If to starboard red appear, ’tis your duty to keep clear"

    16. The give-way vesselThe give-way vessel must take early and substantial action to keep well clear.

    17. The stand-on vesselThe stand-on vessel shall maintain her course and speed, but she may take action toavoid collision if it becomes clear that the give-way vessel is not taking appropriateaction, or when so close that collision can no longer be avoided by the actions of thegive-way vessel alone.

Spoken words from an approved list are substituted for letters. This practicehelps to prevent confusion between similar sounding letters, such as "m" and "n", and to clarifycommunications that may be garbled during transmission.

During World War II, when it was necessary for the Navyto communicate with the Army or Allied forces, signalmen were directed to use standard words. These words changed again in 1957 when the current phonetic alphabet was introduced andadopted by international agreement.
