SEEKING THE LIGHT

In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Caper-naum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes: “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, perhaps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gos-pel of the kingdom. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT ANGELA MERICI (c. 1474-1540) January 27 Born in Northern Italy, orphaned in child-hood, Angela Merici faced a society in which education was largely the privilege of wealthy young men and based primarily in monastic schools. This reality shaped Angela’s insightful conviction that society’s disorder was caused by disorder in the home, and a lack of model Christian mothers the result of neglecting the education of young women. Transform the Christian family by placing an educated wife and mother at its heart, Angela believed, and the whole world would be renewed in Christ! So she gathered a small group of unmarried women, many of them Franciscan Tertiaries (lay affiliates) like herself, and set out to edu-cate poor girls, free of charge, in their homes. She and her band of teachers called them-selves companions, pioneering a new form of non-cloistered religious life for women, bearing witness to evangelical simplicity in the midst of the world, not as a formal “order” but as the Company (compagnia) of Saint Ursula. "Panie, Ty jesteś światłem i zbawieniem moim" (Ps 27, 1)

Św. Mateusz zawsze stara się porównywać wydarzenia z życia Jezusa z tym, co prorocy przepowiedzieli o Mesjaszu, więc rozpoczynając opowiadanie o Jego działalności apostolskiej, przytacza proroctwo Izajasza dotyczące „ziemi Zabulona i Neftalego”, gdzie Mistrz w owym czasie przebywał. „Lud, który siedział w ciemności, ujrzał światło wielkie i mieszkańcom cienistej krainy śmierci światło wzeszło” (Mt 4, 16). Mateusz widział, jak to proroctwo spełniało się w jego oczach. Światłem, które oświeciło Galileję, a stamtąd rozlało się na cały świat, jest Chrystus. Mateusz poznał Go, poszedł za Nim i słuchał Go, a teraz chce przekazać całemu światu tę radosną nowinę. Jezus począł nauczać i mówić: „Nawracajcie się, albowiem bliskie jest królestwo niebieskie” (tamże 17). Orędzie nagli; trzeba je szybko rozgłaszać, bo Królestwo, które Chrystus przyszedł założyć, jest przeznaczone dla wszystkich ludzi i już się zbliża. Potwierdza to przepowiadanie Jezusa ukierunkowane całkowicie na nawracanie i zbawianie. Potwierdzają je cuda, jakich dokonuje „lecząc wszelkie choroby i wszelkie słabości wśród ludu” (tamże 23), uzdrowienie bowiem ciała jest „znakiem” tego głębszego, jakiego pragnie dokonać w duszach. Stwierdza to również wybór i powołanie pierwszych uczniów, których Jezus chciał mieć jako współpracowników swej posługi zbawienia. Mateusz wymienia czterech: Szymona i Andrzeja, Jakuba i Jana. Dwaj z nich poznali już Mistrza, kiedy wskazał im Go Chrzciciel na brzegach Jordanu, i natychmiast poszli za Nim. Teraz sam Jezus zaprasza ich, stojących nad jeziorem, by łowić ryby ze swoimi braćmi: „Pójdźcie za Mną, a uczynię was rybakami ludzi. Oni natychmiast zostawili sieci i poszli za Nim” (tamże 19–20), Bóg powołuje nie tylko raz w życiu; ponawia On swoje wezwania zobowiązująco i coraz natarczywiej. Teraz nie chodzi o to, by iść za Jezusem, lecz by stać się, naśladując Go, „rybakami ludzi”. Odpowiedź jest natychmiastowa jak pierwszy raz, lecz ubogacona wielkodusznym porzuceniem sieci, łodzi, a nawet ojca, którego Jakub i Jan opuścili nad jeziorem. W ten sposób przyjmuje się wezwania Boże, w jakikolwiek sposób byłyby objawione, czy jako wielkie apele, czy owe pokorne wołania, które ujawniają się w zwykłych okolicznościach codziennego życia, lub wewnętrzne natchnienia do większej wspaniałomyślności, oddania się i ofiary. Niech zajaśnieje nade mną płomień, który nieustannie się pali, a nigdy nie gaśnie (zob. Wj 3, 2).

Zacznę wówczas, dzięki Twemu światłu i zanurzony w nim, oglądać Twoją światłość i rozpoznawać w niej Ciebie jako prawdziwe źródło światła. Pozostań z nami, pozostań na zawsze, o słodki Jezu, i udziel mojej duszy słabnącej większej łaski. Pozostań ze mną, a tak zajaśnieję Twoim blaskiem, że stanę się światłem również dla bliźnich. Cała światłość, o Jezu, przyjdzie tylko od Ciebie; a ja nie będę miał w tym żadnego udziału, żadnej zasługi, bo to Ty będziesz jaśniał w innych przeze mnie. Spraw, abym Ci oddal chwałę w sposób, jakiego Ty pragniesz, rzucając blaski na całe moje otoczenie. Oświeć ich, jak mnie oświecasz. Obdarz ich światłem razem ze mną i przeze mnie. Naucz mię objawiać Twoją chwalę i prawdę, Twoją wolę. Spraw, abym Cię głosił nie słowami lecz przez dobry przykład, z całą siłą zdobywczości i miłosnego wpływu mego postępowania. Spraw, abym stał się Twoim świadkiem przez widzialne podobieństwo do świętych Twoich i doskonałą miłość ku Tobie (J. H. Newman).

Saint Thomas Aquinas Saint of the Day for January 28 (1225 – March 7, 1274) By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catho-lic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor. At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in his parents’ hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually be-came abbot. In 1239, he was sent to Naples to com-plete his studies. It was here that he was first at-tracted to Aristotle’s philosophy. By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family’s plans for him and joined the Dominicans, much to his mother’s dismay. On her order, Thomas was cap-tured by his brother and kept at home for over a year. Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, directed the Dominican schools at Rome and Viterbo, combated adversaries of the mendicants, as well as the Averroists, and ar-gued with some Franciscans about Aristotelianism. His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony, and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, pervades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent de-fender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the whole natural order as com-ing from God the Creator, and to see reason as a di-vine gift to be highly cherished. The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. When asked why he stopped writing, he replied, “I cannot go on…. All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.” He died March 7, 1274.
