Y., Thursday, March 2, 2000 DOT aims to make Taconic Parkway safer Millbrook High School honor roll by Joe Prout A fatal car crash from 1997 contributed to the Department of Transportation's (DOT) de- cision to make several changes to the at-grade crossings along the Taconic Parkway, said DOT spokeswoman Colleen McKenna last week. At-grade crossings are streets that intersect the parkway at the same horizontal level. Many of these streets cross both the north and southbound lanes of the parkway. One Hopewell Junc- tion resident's wifedied because of what he described as poor conditions at such an intersec- tion. Milton Norstein lost his wife, Ruth, in an automobile accident on Nov. 30, 1997 at the intersec- tion of the parkway and Carpen- ter Road in East Fishkill. Norstein said his daughter, Nadine, a Florida resident, crossed to the middle of the park- way successfully. Norstein said poor visibility contributed to his daughter turning onto the Taconic heading the wronsz di- rection' instead of continuing across the parkway to the other end of Carpenter Road. After the accident, Norstein wrote to Gov. George E. Pataki about the incident. He received a reply from then Regional Di- rector Philip J. Clark that said the DOT would be addressine the situation, but Norstein wasn't told when. The earliest chanqes com- muters can expect are blinking lights, which current Regional Director Richard Peters said would be put in this summer. Peters specifically said the Car- penter Road intersection would be dealt with, but he said several other at-grade intersections would be looked at in Dutchess County. Peters also said street lights would eventually be installed at the Carpenter Road intersection, but he said due to contractual matters those lights might not be installed for up to two years. He said both of these lights are being put in to alert drivers to the pres- ence of tfie intersection. According to Peters, the DOT has several plans for similar in- tersections in Dutchess County. Skidmore Road in LaGrange will eventually be closed. Stormville Road, between Beekman and East Fishkill, and Bogardus Lane in East Fishkill, will be looked at to determine if changes need to be made there. The town board of LaGrange will be addressed to discuss problems the town has with intersections in its jurisdic- tion. Peters said these studies, be- ing conducted by the state de- partments o\' Planning and Traf- fic and Safety, will show what changes are needed. Some of the changes Peters said to expect are bridges for the side roads that will either go above or below the parkway. He saidtk bridge will be put at the Carpenter Road intersection in the next five to seven years. Similar bridges will be put in LaGrange for Hosner Mountain and Arthursbun* roads after that. Peters said changes are being sought by the DOT as far north as Hollow Road in Clinton.
