Unfortunately there is very little useful information available within the public domain, and very few lightning risk mitigation controls (without significant limitations) being commercially available. Organisations are often left to fend for themselves in navigating through the various confusing technicalities of an already misunderstood, yet catastrophic risk. Lightning & Surge Technologies has specialised in lightning protection, lightning threat detection/notification, and lightning risk mitigation for over 20 years, and has assisted many organisations in Australia, Africa, SE Asia and South America deal with their own significant lightning fatality and injury incidents. During this period, Lightning & Surge Technologies found the majority of lightning fatality and injury statistics had been attributed to the indirect effects of lightning-related Earth Potential Rise (EPR) rather than direct strike, yet it found no commercially available EPR controls existed that could have protected any persons more predisposed to lightning risks during the course of their outdoor activities. This was despite similar EPR risk controls being mandated for use in all high voltage electrical applications worldwide. In conjunction with an Australian lightning researcher/physicist, Lightning & Surge Technologies decided such an anomaly represented a dangerous gap in available lightning safety controls, and looked to develop its own lightning EPR risk mitigation control. With more drivers on the roads, our roads are getting busier and more congested than ever, causing capacity and maintenance issues that can be dangerous for the traffi c management industry.
The progression of safety and innovation is critical to keep road workers safe, according to JAG Traffi c Commercial Manager Corey Nicholas.
