Unfortunately there is very little useful information available within the public domain, and very few lightning risk mitigation controls (without significant limitations) being commercially available. Organisations are often left to fend for themselves in navigating through the various confusing technicalities of an already misunderstood, yet catastrophic risk. Lightning & Surge Technologies has specialised in lightning protection, lightning threat detection/notification, and lightning risk mitigation for over 20 years, and has assisted many organisations in Australia, Africa, SE Asia and South America deal with their own significant lightning fatality and injury incidents. During this period, Lightning & Surge Technologies found the majority of lightning fatality and injury statistics had been attributed to the indirect effects of lightning-related Earth Potential Rise (EPR) rather than direct strike, yet it found no commercially available EPR controls existed that could have protected any persons more predisposed to lightning risks during the course of their outdoor activities. This was despite similar EPR risk controls being mandated for use in all high voltage electrical applications worldwide. In conjunction with an Australian lightning researcher/physicist, Lightning & Surge Technologies decided such an anomaly represented a dangerous gap in available lightning safety controls, and looked to develop its own lightning EPR risk mitigation control. The LightningMat Earth Potential Rise (EPR) Safety Mat was developed primarily for ease of portability, and to offer a simple and cost-effective means by which outdoor workers or campers could be afforded a highly portable lightning risk mitigation control that dealt with the greater percentage of lightning risk being its EPR effects. IFAP/CGU SAFE WAY AWARD WINNERS 2016

With more drivers on the roads, our roads are getting busier and more congested than ever, causing capacity and maintenance issues that can be dangerous for the traffi c management industry.

The progression of safety and innovation is critical to keep road workers safe, according to JAG Traffi c Commercial Manager Corey Nicholas.

“We are working in harm’s way every day and these innovations are critical to keeping everyone safe including road users,” he said.

“We believe the progression of safety and innovation such as the Truck Mounted Attenuator has been critical to keeping road workers safe.”

JAG received gold at the IFAP Safety Innovation 2016 Awards in their fi rst year, receiving industry recognition for its eff orts into the implementation

and management of its management system. The company was recognised with three awards including the Gold Safeway Achiever Award, the Safeway Achievement Award for its Safety Management System and the Safeway Achievement Award for six months LTI free. JAG has a structured and strategic approach to ensuring safety and innovation remains at the forefront of the company.

With an ISO accredited Integrated Management System that allows JAG to maintain a level of both service and safety, JAG meets not only clients’ needs but also importantly the needs of the business.

“This management system ensures we not only remain compliant but continue to seek better, safer and more economical practices to implement to the industry,” Mr Nicholas said.

The company was formed with the aim of becoming the most reliable and trusted provider of traffi c management in WA with extensive experience in the sector at management and operations levels. After undertaking intensive market research and liaising with potential staff and clients, the company hired some of the best traffi c controllers in the state.

JAG Traffi c also sets out to train unexperienced staff using the best techniques to avoid unwanted habits from unproven people in the industry, an issue that has constantly arisen in the industry since its early beginnings. JAG also ensures the same traffi c controllers continue to work on the same projects and with the same clients and crews to ensure effi ciency and reliability.
