I know Jan has many exciting things planned to do in her retirement, however, you will be very missed at Pinewood Mrs Beecroft! Please come back and visit us often.

Mrs Jan Migliore will be Pinewood’s new Business Manager from the commencement of 2019. STUDENT WALK UP DAY—Up to Next Year Level… and End of Year Reports On Thursday, 20th December between 12.30-1.00pm, we will conduct a ‘Walk Up’ for all students. During this 30 minute period, the students will be informed of their class teacher for next year. The students will then visit their new classroom for 2019 and meet their new teacher (for about 20 minutes) before returning to their current classroom for lunch.

Student reports will also be distributed to families on Thursday 20th December. The reports will be accompanied by a complete staffing list for 2019. PINEWOOD READING CHALLENGE In line with AIP targets to improve Reading; the challenge will promote regular reading over the holidays with the incentive of a prize (book voucher) per year level. Please read the flyer attached.

Some benefits of reading; 1. Children who read often and widely get better at it. After all, practice makes perfect in almost everything humans do, and reading is no different.

2. Reading exercises our brain and improves concentration. Reading is a much more complex task for the human brain rather than watching TV, for example, reading strengthens brains connections and builds NEW connections. Children have to sit still and quietly so that they can focus on the story when they are reading. If they read often, they will develop the skill to do this for longer.

3. Reading teaches children about the world around them. Through reading a variety of books children learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experience.

4. Reading improves vocabulary and language skills. Children learn new words as they read. Subconsciously, they absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively in their writing and speaking.

5. Reading develops a child's imagination and empathy. As we read our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. While we are engaged in a story we are also imagining how a character is feeling. Young children then bring this knowledge into their everyday play. As children develop they begin to imagine how they would feel in that situation.

6. Reading is fun and a great way to spend time together. A book or an e-reader doesn't take up much space and is light to carry, so you take it anywhere so you can never be bored if you have a book in your bag. Reading together on the sofa, bedtimes stories and visiting the library are just some ways of spending time together. LAST DAY OF TERM – Friday 21 December Final assembly will be at 1.30 pm School finishing time is 2.30pm

Last week we had our EAL celebration morning on Wednesday.

There were 80 students from Prep to Year 6. During the celebration we did things such as crafting, drawing activities, cooking, board games and making Christmas or holiday cards to give to parents or best friends. As well all the Students read a book with Mrs Hayden. In cooking sessions with Mrs Pryce we made a Christmas cookie and there were marshmallows, chocolate chips and some kind of cookie icing.

We really enjoyed the EAL celebration so we would like to thank Mrs Hayden and Mrs Pryce for the brilliant work they have done.

By Miffy and Lala P.S Here are some other comments Glen - Yesterday we helped to do art and craft, we did cooking in the library kitchen, we did colouring and decorating cards. We even made biscuits with Mrs Pryce and we even read stories. Alex - Yesterday we helped the Preps doing the work in the EAL celebration. First I did the dot to dot. It was hard then it became easier then at

the last number it was one hundred and fifteen. Secondly I did the crossword sheet it was pretty hard. There were ten clues so it was easier. Then Mrs Hayden sent me to work with a Prep. She wanted to do the colourings so I helped her. Meanwhile Jimmy, Steven and Dylan were playing games, while I was helping the Prep. After that we had cooking with Mrs Pryce.

Jewin- We helped the Preps with the art and craft. We were helping the Preps with the cooking and the other things. They had lots of fun, they were so cute. We made chocolate and we cooked biscuits with some yummy gummy and some dairy mix. Michelle- Last week we had an EAL celebration and we made some cookies and we needed to choose a Prep as our buddy. And I made a card with my buddy. We used a lot of glitter and a lot of glue and some glitter got on my hand. Julien - Last week we went to an EAL celebration. My favourite bit was the craft. I worked with a Prep and together we made a lovely Christmas card. It

was the best day of my life!!! Gabriel - Last week I went to the library in the morning. I went to an EAL celebration. My

favourite part was the cooking we got to make some sort of reindeer cookies. We also got to make Christmas cards. Jimmy - I liked the cooking most. I made a reindeer biscuit. I got to enjoy the snacks I made. Gui - Last week on Wednesday there was an EAL celebration and I made some food - biscuits and mms. The other thing that I liked was that my friend Glen was there and he played with me a lot and it was super fun! And I coloured three Santa hats, one was red, one was blue and one yellow. It was so much fun there! I wish I can go there again.
