Formative assessments include, but are not limited to, homework, classwork, notes, activities, and check-ins. Formative assessments are worth 20% of a student’s grade. Summative Assessments include work completed after students should have mastered a concept or skill. Summative assessments include, but are not limited to, tests, projects, and presentations. Summative assessments are worth 80% of a student’s grade. Students may have the opportunity to redo or retake summative assessments to show an improved level of understanding. These opportunities will always be subject to teacher discretion. Homework Homework is usually assigned Mondays –Thursdays. Homework must be neat and complete at the beginning of the class for which it was assigned. Writing the proper heading, highlighting or stapling the assignment must all be done prior to the beginning of class. Any work received or completed after it is collected in class will be considered late homework and graded accordingly.

Absences It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have any missed notes, assignments, and announcements from an absence. Absent homework should be checked off by Ms. Barboza or Ms. Hicban. SCIENCE – Grade 6 Teacher: Mrs. Lynne Dowdy Email: [email protected]

Objectives • To foster independent and critical thinking skills. • To develop science literacy and to develop a working knowledge of science vocabulary and core

ideas, using topics in the field of Earth Science. • To increase proficiency in scientific practices such as asking questions, developing and using

models, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations, and designing solutions. • To develop effective writing and communication skills, such as by reporting on a self-designed investigation for the annual Science Fair.

• To reinforce the idea that science is a process for learning about the world. Class Materials We will use a number of different instructional materials in sixth grade science, including Pearson’s

Interactive Science: Earth Science, © 2013, and various supplemental materials. The science curriculum is standards-based, not exclusively textbook-driven. Content throughout the year will be based on the Archdiocesan Science Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Science classes will be held Monday through Thursday. Your child is expected to have their Interactive

Science textbook, science notebook, and science folder at school, and in class, on these days. ****************************************************************************************************************************************

Evaluation Components of the report card grade for science may vary slightly from one quarter to the next, depending on the number of tests and on the science activities performed. In a typical quarter, the grade may be determined as follows:

Homework and Class work (25%) Homework will be assigned after most science classes, and any written work will generally be due at the beginning of the next science class. Occasionally, longer term assignments may be assigned. Any assignments should be completed on time, neatly, using complete sentences, and using blue or black ballpoint ink, unless otherwise specified. If the work requires using loose-leaf paper, the paper should be full-size wide-ruled binder paper. No spiral notebook pages with torn edges will be accepted!

On FastDirect, each homework assignment is worth 10 pts. If a student is absent, homework must still be submitted, and as long as it is complete, the student will earn full credit. Significant points will be deducted if the homework is submitted late, is incomplete when submitted, has not been corrected in class, or is not submitted at all.

Chapter tests and Major writing assignments (40%) Chapter tests will assess your child's understanding of lesson concepts. The questions will address not only the ability to recall facts but also the ability to analyze, synthesize, and apply the information. In other words, success on the tests will require more than simply memorizing information! Success will require the use of higher order thinking skills, and will require that time be set aside daily for studying, working through the material, and “making connections” between ideas. In addition to using chapter tests for evaluating learning, occasionally major projects and writing assignments will be assigned. Some of these assignments may be cross-curricular, in that they are assigned as part of the science program as well as part of the language arts and/or technology programs. Spelling/Vocab tests and Quizzes (15%) Spelling/vocabulary tests and occasional quizzes will assess your child’s working knowledge of science vocabulary and their note-taking skills. Notebook (15%) Your child’s science notebook will be used to record everything done in class and occasionally homework answers as well. Periodically during the semester, the notebook will be collected, perhaps without warning. Points will be deducted if the notebook is not well-organized, if notes or data entries are missing, or if the notebook is submitted late. Participation (5%) Each week your child will earn 10 participation points. Reasons to have points deducted for the week include: not actively participating in class, being off-task, talking to neighbors during class discussion, being disrespectful to fellow classmates, or any other behavior that disrupts the learning environment.

Computer Technology Program

At St. Brendan Parish School, our Computer Technology Program is more than just learning how to use the physical computer and basic software programs. We strive to go beyond, by building an understanding of how technology works and giving students opportunities to practice the use of various forms of technology in practical ways. Students also learn computer vocabulary and technological terms, discuss and implement safe, respectful computer and Internet usage, all the while supporting and helping each other.

Each grade has different mastery goals so that by the time a student is to the point of graduation, they will be comfortable using the computer to seek information, manipulate data and images, and produce a finished, professional project. Students are exposed to a variety of different software applications throughout their years in preparation for anything they may encounter in high school.

Technology is important in our lives and is a basic skill needed for the 21st century. As we progress further into a technological and information seeking world, computer skills become a much-needed commodity. We strive to prepare every student to the best of their abilities.

Sixth Grade Specifics

Students in sixth grade will continue using the schools MacBook Pro laptops as part Junior High Laptop Program, in conjunction with video and picture editing software. Students will practice and be responsible for saving a copy of all schoolwork to their server account as well as to the school provided flash drive. Proper use and care of electronic equipment will be reinforced and practiced. Students will continue to develop and master skills in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel. A focus will be placed on the professional presentation of work, whether it is a Word document, Excel spreadsheet, Power Point presentation, or multimedia project. Students will begin working in small groups as well as presenting formal PowerPoint presentations both in a group and individual format. KidPix will be used as a drawing application and PrintShop Deluxe will be used as graphic design software to create banners, signs, and cards for various projects. Students will continue to advance their typing speed and accuracy with various typing programs. Students will learn Internet searching skills, put them to use to do independent research on the Internet, and learn to properly cite sources. Internet safety and computer ethics will also be discussed in class. Quizzes on computer skills and knowledge will be given quarterly in addition to class projects and occasional homework assignments.

Computer Lab Hours

The Computer Lab will be open at least two days a week after school as well as at least two recess or lunches (times will be announced/posted weekly). Special arrangements can be made as needed for students who need additional help or time – students should make a request and be sure to tell their parents if it is after school.

Technology Projects/Homework Policy & Grading

All assignments (classwork, projects) must be electronically submitted to the Hand-In Folder by the due date/time for full credit.

Each assignment receives 10 points for being submitted on-time and saved correctly

(this is the Hand-In grade).

Projects are graded independent of their “hand-in grade” and range from 20-200 points. Most projects are integrated with other subjects and double graded.

Students may submit their project/work from home, however they are responsible for checking that it

was submitted. If it was not received, no Hand-In credit will be given and it will be considered late.

Any assigned homework is given credit the day it is due – partial credit will be given if turned in by the end of the week.

Printing

Homework assignments or projects must be printed at home. Students may print at school only if a parent sends in a note explaining why it’s not possible to print at

home. Students must always have a teacher’s permission to print, even for in-class assignments.

Flash Drives

All students were given a St. Brendan Flash Drive which they must bring to school at all times. If the flash drive is lost, they must replace it or buy another one from the school (~ $10-15).

Flash drives must be electronically named and have an appropriate keychain/lanyard attached at all

times.

School Policies

Students may never log into their email accounts or any other accounts other than their server account, Mathletics account, School Google Account, or FastDirect account. Doing so will violate the Acceptable

Use Policy and result in suspension from the use of St. Brendan Technology for a period of time.

If students do not have their flash drive and do not have a Mac to connect to their server account from home, they may email Ms. Proehl ([email protected]) their assignment, however they are

responsible for collecting it the next morning and turning it in to the Hand-In Folder. Emailing the assignment does not count as turning it in and it will be considered late if not submitted to the Hand-In

Folder.

If there is ever a problem or concern, or if help or clarification is needed, the student should speak with the teacher directly. The computer lab is open throughout the week and time is always made to help

students catch up or advance their skills.
