Hello 6th Grade Hornets
Welcome Back! We hope you had an enjoya-ble and restful break and are ready and rearing to go.
A few housekeeping notes before we get started:
1. Class begins at 7:45; in order for students to be able to get the full benefit of each class, is it imperative that they are in their classrooms on time. Warm-ups happen in the first few minutes of class, and teachers begin teaching right away. We un-derstand that things happen occasionally which cause us all to run a little behind, however, chronic tardiness harms your own child and interrupts the learning pro-cess and flow of the entire classroom.
2. School supplies, such as writing utensils, are necessary items for students to have. Too often instructional time is taken up because multiple students come to class unpre-pared, and teachers must stop what they are doing to distribute these items.
If there is a financial or other issue preventing your child from having these items, please contact Mrs. Browning either by phone @ (404)767-
7730, ext. 130, or email @ [email protected].
3. We are a uniform school. Please make sure your child is dressed in full uniform, daily. A copy of the dress code is at-tached. Please review it with your child. If you have any ques-tions about it, please contact the school. Please pay specific attention to jacket and belt re-quirement. As with the school supplies, if there is a financial or other issue preventing your child from being in full uni-form, please contact Mrs. Browning.
We are confidant, that will all of us working on the same team, each student will be suc-cessful.
Contact Information Parents, it is extremely im-portant that we have the most up-to-date contact information for you. If your contact infor-mation changes, please update the school immediately.
Parent Volunteers We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE hav-ing parent volunteers at school and in our classrooms. For the safety of all our students, how-ever, all volunteers who will be
near/with students must view a volunteer training video. Please make arrangements with Mrs. Clark to do so.
Tutorials and Saturday School:
There will not be any after school tutorials this week.
There will be Saturday School this weekend, January 11th. Mrs. Browning (Reading), and Mrs. Arnold (Math and Science Resource) will be pre-sent.
*Please note that Saturday School does not begin un-til 9:00 am. and ends at
1:00 pm. We have re-ceived notification from Hapeville Police that stu-dents are unattended out-
side of the building on Saturday morning as early
as 8:45, and they will begin issuing fines to
those parents who leave their children
unsupervised. At 1:15 teachers will no longer be responsible for students
whom have not been picked up; Hapeville Po-
lice will be notified.

This Week We will clear out the cobwebs and review classroom policies and procedures before learning some new ones.
Warm-ups this semester will be vocabulary-based. Students will be learning Latin and Greek pre-fixes, roots and suffixes in order to expand their vocabulary. Stu-dents will have a mini-quiz on this each Friday.
Homework There will not be any homework this week. Reading logs will re-sume next Monday.
Trip to Italy: We are getting closer to the deadline for registration. If you are definitely planning on send-ing your child, you may go ahead and visit the website and register: www.eftours.com/1357533. It is important to register as soon as possible in order to lock in cur-rent pricing. Please contact me if
you have any questions: [email protected].
Tutorial: I will not have after school tuto-rial this week. Please note that my tutorial schedule will change. Beginning next week, I will have after school tutorial on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 until 5:00. Please be sure to pick your child up by 5:00. Students who are picked up late more than once will not be allowed to come to tutorial.
Lost Documents: If your child loses any docu-ments I distribute, you can find them on my website:
http://mrsbrowningreading.weebly.com
Volunteer Opportunities: I NEED HELP!!!! As you know, each family at Hapeville Charter
is required to complete 15 volun-teer hours annually. If you have any time during the school day to volunteer, please let me know. I have lots of stuff that needs to be done.
Classroom Needs: I am completely out of tissue, disinfecting wipes and construc-tion paper. While I can provide a small amount of those things, I certainly cannot do so for 175 students. If you are able to send in any of the above items, I would be extremely grateful.
Questions, concerns: If you have any additional ques-tions or concerns, feel free to contact me @ 404-767-7730, ext. 130, or [email protected].
Thank you,
Mrs. Browning

Students will receive a copy of textbook, pages 88-108, Chapter 3, Lesson A, to keep. They must bring these pages with them just in case we are not able to use the technology in our classroom. Students will also be responsible for keeping the Vocabulary for Chapter 3, page 131. This page can be kept at home to help stu-dents study their vocabulary words. On a separate sheet of paper they will have the first vocabulary words that will be use for the first two weeks of school. This page must be avail-able every day for class. In Chapter 3, students will
talk about places in the city, ask and answer questions, make introductions and ex-
press courtesy, say where someone is going
in the city. talk about thing that people
do,
talk about places in Mexico, talk places they would like
to visit in Mexico. We will being talking about places in the city of Atlanta and how to say it in Spanish. Then when we begin the textbook, the subject will change to “la ciudad Mexico.” We will also begin using computers in the class-room and review how to get to the online textbook, how to send emails, and how to send attach-ments. This will be new in our curriculum. Homework will be vocabulary words and their English transla-tion. Students will use questions in Spanish and understand the interrogative words and their English translation. and defining all vocabulary words in chap-ters 3 and 4. The reading and vocabulary should be completed by Monday of next week. In class we will be doing lessons on Rocks and Minerals out of the CRCT Coach Book. These lessons will be copied, and students are asked to keep all CRCT lessons in a special Science CRCT section in their school binder, or have a separate smaller binder to keep all CRCT materials, as we will be doing a lot of CRCT prepara-tion work between now and early April. Let's all start this semester off on the right foot. Parents, please make sure your stu-dent is reading their science textbook and completing vocabulary-related homework assignments. Please make sure they are studying their test notes in their science notebook each week, as those will be giv-en to the students each week and they will be having major exams at least once every two to three weeks throughout the semes-ter. If your student tells you that he or she does not have any work to do in science then they are not being completely truthful with you, as they should have something to do at home on a very regular basis. There is a ton of material to cover this semester, as well as preparing for the CRCT exam, so students who do not do the required work at home will fall behind quickly, and will not be able to catch up. Please work with your student on study skills, and be-
Since it is the start of a new semester, please make sure your student has a new composition notebook to take test notes in and do warm ups. This needs to be a new note-book, and not a continuation of the one they used first semester. If you can, please make sure the composition notebook is green in color, or that the student colors a portion of the front cover green, as that is the official color for science. Also, if you can, get a small binder (1/2 or 1 inch should work). This binder will be used to keep CRCT materials for this semester. This week in Earth Science we will be tak-ing an assessment on Tuesday and Wednes-day that will show me the progress each stu-dent has made in the class through the first half of the school year, and what areas we will need to concentrate on the most during the spring semester. Like the test that was given at the start of the year, this one will be graded and you will see the grades on the progress reports, but the test will be weighted at a 0, which means the grade will not have any af-fect on the overall grade. So, when you see a 0% on the progress report, do not be alarmed as that simply means the weight is at 0%. On Thursday we will begin work on the Rocks and Minerals unit. Students will need to read chapters 3 and 4 in their science text-books at home, as well as complete writing
Science
Ms. Pugh’s Math 2013 has gone and it is time to reflect and make positive chang-es for 2014! Sixth grade will be-gan with unit 3 (Expressions). Please encourage your child to study the previous units covered last year. There will NOT be tu-torial this week, nor will I be in attendance at Saturday school. Continue to check your edmodo account weekly for any updates or announcements. Parents if you have not set up an account
please make provisions to do so. You can expect for your student to have homework DAILY!!!! If your student has misplaced his/her mathematics workbook he/she is still responsible for ALL assignments and late assign-ments will be handled in accord-ance to the guidelines specified in my 2013-2014 math syllabus. If you need to purchase a new workbook the cost is $15 and there are limited quantities. Stu-dents can continue to use their old composition notebook or
come involved with them in studying for exams. Take their science notebooks and look at the notes and quiz them over the material. Last semester test grades were quite low across the board, and that is directly related to the student's lack of study and preparation at home. They thought that what we did in class was enough for them, and they found out that it wasn't. With the increased number of exams this semester, if students do poor-ly on exams again, their overall grade will be greatly impacted much more than it was first semester. Finally, first semester supplies are running low. If any parents would like to donate hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes to wipe down the tables, paper towels, and boxes of tissues, it would be greatly ap-preciated. Remember that the spring semester is the MOST IMPORTANT semester. The tendency is for students to relax and start taking their education less seriously as they see the end of the year ap-proaching. Please continually stress to your student the importance of staying focused and doing well this semester as their final grade at the end of May is very important to them in many respects, as well as their success on the CRCT ex-ams.
feel free to purchase a new one (the color should be pur-ple).
MANDATORY items needed for class EVERY day are: 3
sharpened #2 pencils, mathe-matics workbook, and math
composition notebook!

I hope everyone had a wonder-ful break and is ready to get back to work! I will be intro-ducing the European portion of the standards this week. We will start with Europe’s geogra-phy (physical and political). Make sure that the students are reviewing their geography at home this week. This semester we will be focusing on Europe.
Also, I will no longer be
making copies of the CRCT Coach Book practice pages. Please purchase one if you have not done so already. The book is $15, it comes with the standards we have covered and will cover, prac-tice questions (which will be used in class), and practice tests. This book we will be used a lot for review for the
CRCT. We will also have more homework out of the book this semester. Let’s get the semester started!

January 2014 Dear Parents: Starting February until April, the Language Arts and Reading classes will be reviewing and preparing for the CRCT that will be given in April. To help us in our reviewing process, we will be using the CRCT Workout books for Reading and Language Arts. The cost of the book is $10. These books are valuable resources to help the students meet and/or exceed the state standardized test. We strongly recommend that each student has his or her own book. We will be working from a classroom set of the coach books, but they MUST have their own workbooks which will give them an opportunity to take the book home and review the information. We will be collecting money for the books starting January 13th. The deadline for the money will be Friday, January 31st. Please provide cash or money orders for the books. Money orders need to be made payable to Hapeville Charter Middle School, and money needs to be turned in to Mrs. Chlebeck at the Main Campus and Ms. Walker at the 8th Grade. We will order books on Monday, February 3rd. Please return the attached order form along with the money for the book before or on the previously stated dates. Thank you in advance for your support of your child and his/ her education. Sincerely, Ms. Evans, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Garcia HCMS Language Arts Department
