FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Art Imitates Nature, and Necessity Is the Mother of Inven on.

I love this saying. It truly embodies everything about 6th Street Playhouse and our current modus operandi as we have struggled to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and con nue to make great theatre, show a er show – season a er season.

We create art that explicitly imitates nature – human nature – and we fi nd ourselves these days constantly in search of how to do that while faced with myriad obstacles and limita ons of resource. When faced with the necessity to keep budgets under control, cket prices aff ordable, ar st compensa on compe ve, and the community served as they have come to expect – that is when inspired, ingenious solu ons – inven on – are paramount.

Our process and subsequent produc on of Crazy for You tonight has been a perfect storm in which necessity has literally created new theatre – some mes out of what seems to be nothing. Sure, Crazy for You is the source material, and we have been true to the authors’ intent – all the Gershwin songs are intact, and we tell the story. I wanted to tell another story as well: our story of moun ng this show facing serious limita ons and barriers. Those hurdles included cu ng the budget for the orchestra, cas ng far fewer actors than the script calls for and doubling roles, elimina ng the need for a fully realized scenic design and implemen ng a paired down costume design, and lastly, having only one male originally audi on for the show. These all led me to the directorial concept you are about to experience, and forced us all as a company to trust one another, maximize on our strengths and make great theatre.

The journey of trust and love, and the end result of our Necessi es being the Mother of this inven on tonight have all of us in the company very proud to call this our Crazy for You! This has been a joy, and I hope it brings you some, too.

Enjoy the show,

Craig A. MillerAr s c Director

In 2004, two separate theatre companies - The Santa Rosa Players (est. 1971) and Actors Theatre of Sonoma County (est. 1984) - joined forces and transformed the 107-year-old Del Monte cannery in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square into the 6th Street Playhouse. This $1.3 million dollar renova on resulted in a state-of-the-art theatre facility, which opened to acclaim in 2005.

In July 2007, the main stage was named for Santa Rosa businessman and arts patron, G.K. Hardt. In 2009, a second more in mate theatre space - The Studio - was opened. Together, these two theatres are home to drama c, musical, and improv performances, School of Drama presenta ons, and a variety of special events.

6th Street Playhouse is honored to have received the City of Santa Rosa Award for Cultural Enrichment and the Sonoma County Historical Society Award for Preserva on of a Historical Building. What started as a small endeavor con nues to grow year a er year with the support of our community. We look forward to con nuing to off er outstanding produc ons and educa onal programs here at 6th Street Playhouse.
