Did you know...A devastating fire destroyed nine businesses on the south side of West
Allegan Street in June 1863, including Albert R. Foster’s Drug Store. Fosterhad the current brick building built in the early 1890s, and since that time it hashoused grocery stores, a retail stove business, candy store, coin shop andBob’s Hardware.
Born in 1834, Albert was the youngest son of Otsego’s first settler, Dr.Samuel Foster. His title of doctor reflected his career as a nineteenth centurydruggist, however, he was more widely known for his frequent encounters withthe wrong side of the law. He was known to have sold his illegal home brew and narcotics, and was always game for offending his downtownneighbors by allowing his cows to graze about town or by hanging skunk skins outside his front door. When drunk and rowdy he was given tomounting his horse and galloping up and down the sidewalks causing considerable annoyance and danger to the pedestrians.
He was nearly imprisoned for the murder of fellow Otsego resident, Loren Curtis, with whom he had an earlier disagreement. Curtis was shot ashe crossed in front of Foster’s building one dark and muggy night in July 1867. Townspeople felt strongly Foster was guilty, but the lack of aneyewitness in the dark of night helped him evade a conviction. Albert R. Foster died in Otsego in 1899.

Leon "Lee" HANEYAGE 88 – PLAINWELL, MI
Lee passedaway on theevening ofJune 24, 2014,at Life CareCenter of Plainwell wherehe had spent the lastmonth of his life. He was
the eldest of five children, born Septem-ber 13, 1925 to Ivan and Hazel (Potter)Haney in Berlemont. He served his coun-try as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy duringWorld War II. He married Marian MudgetBrenner June 6, 1964. They celebratedtheir 50th anniversary at a small gatheringat Life Care earlier this month. Lee wasemployed at Consumers Energy's gasdistribution for 36 years, first as a pipelinewelder and then for 18 years as a super-visor. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, play-ing cards, fishing and hunting and wasalways eager to assist with domesticchores and aid to family and friends inneed. Lee is survived by his wife, Marian;daughters, Janet (Ron) Cozart; Norma(Enrique) Hope, Cathy (Blair) Bates, KarenAnn Haney; sons, Marvin (Sue) Brenner;Roger Brenner, and Wayne (Ellen) Haney;several grandchildren, great grandchil-dren and great-great grandchildren. Hewas preceded in death by his parents; hisbrothers, Duane, Albert and Jim; his sis-ter, Mary Lou Morris; his daughter, LindaConklin; and his son, Michael Brenner.Burial took place at Earl Cemetery in PineGrove Township. A memorial service tookplace on Wednesday, July 2, at Gun PlainTownship Hall from 2-4 PM. In lieu offlowers, memorials may be made to GreatLakes Hospice or Chula Vista GardenClub.

Hannifin for 31 years retiring in 1998. Inher leisure time she enjoyed flower gar-dening, wintering in Florida and playingshuffle board where she had competed inthe Master’s Tournament in Palmetto, FL.More than anything she loved spendingtime with her family and her grandchildrenand great-grandchildren. On April 21,1973 she married Birl Sparks who pre-ceded her death in 2013. Surviving areher children, Gail (Floyd) Harmon of Men-don, Gordon (Jackie) Stineback of Otsegoand Sandra (Steve) Harmon of Allegan; 7grandchildren and 17 great-grandchil-dren; her sister, Peggy (Paul) Boysen ofArkansas. Preceding her in death wereher parents, her husband Birl and herstep-father Bill Pearson in 2014. Funeralservices were held Tuesday, July 1, 2014with Mr. Mike Risner and Hospice Chap-lain Greg Carlson officiating. Burial fol-lowed at Oakhill Cemetery, Orangeville.Contributions in memory of Betty may bemade to the West MI Cancer Center orWings Home.

Her hobbies included knitting, traveling,camping, and spending time with hergrandchildren. On January 2, 1971, shemarried Edward Bronson, who survives.Also surviving are their children, ToddBronson of Otsego and Tonya (Trey) Hiem-stra of Otsego; five grandchildren,Nicholas Salladay, Kristin Hiemstra, Brit-tany Hiemstra, Kaitlynn Hiemstra andMacey Hiemstra; sister, Linda (Jim) Hefeleof Tucson, AZ; brother, Randy (Mary) Vliekof Vicksburg; sister-in-law, Mary Vliek ofFlorida; several nieces and nephews; a cir-cle of friends; and her Goff Lake family.Preceding her in death were her parents,Norman and Gloria Vliek and brother, TerryVliek.
