We have had an international feel to the school in the last week with visitors from our sister school in Hiroshima and a group of Korean students from Hongseong County. It has been great to see how much our students have learnt from our visitors and how they have welcomed them into Pasadena. We have also been conducting our Year 6 Orientation Programme over the past 2 weeks. All of our contributing Primary Schools have spent time touring the school and taking part in our Specialist programmes. Our Student Councillors have done a great job being ambassadors for our school, answering questions and taking tours of the school. School App A reminder that we have a school app (both iPhone and android). Go to the App Store on your phone, search for SchoolAppsNZ, click on 'Open' when you see the logo, type in 'Pasadena Intermediate' and select our school name. After that you can choose what group alerts you want to receive on your phone, as well as being able to let us know about student absences, seeing our latest newsletters/ weekly updates, daily notices, student-led conference bookings, accessing the school calendar, sports events, etc. 2020 Enrolments We are currently taking 2020 enrolments. BISC(Business in Service of Community) and C@P (Community @ Pasadena) The recent C@P chocolate fundraiser was very successful with $10,000 being raised. A big thank you to the parents and students that were involved. This money will go towards buying 24 additional Chromebooks for classes. Also thank you to BISC who donated $500 to C@P which also went towards the purchasing of the Chromebooks.

Pasadena Hosting Nagisa Junior High School On the first day of the term, we welcomed 25 students from Nagisa Junior High School in Hiroshima, Japan, with a pōwhiri. This was to reciprocate them hosting our students earlier in the year.

While the Nagisa students were here, they were completely immersed in the ‘New Zealand’ way of life. During their school days, they cooked a number of dishes with our students; learned a haka and a poi; took part in English language lessons; played some team tactics; battled it out in dodgeball; had a go at Kī-o-rahi; studied the ancient art of whatu; visited the Auckland War Memorial Museum; toured downtown Auckland with Whaea Nat; had music lessons with Ms. Donnelly; dabbled in tech with Mr. Fasavalu; made Poi with the Rumaki; and travelled to the Auckland Zoo.

While with their host families, the Hiroshima students took part in a variety of activities, such as visiting the Sky Tower, going to Parakai Hot Springs, and a marae trip to Rotorua organised by Stacey and Scotty Morrison. The Japanese students stayed with their host families for 2 weeks, ending on Monday the 5th of August. The Hiroshima Student Exchange Programme runs every year and all students at Pasadena Intermediate School are welcome to apply.

Cyber Safety at Pasadena Many of you have already downloaded the free Mobile Zone App onto your child’s phone and we thank you for doing this. We feel at this time it is important that we set a timeline for all students who bring a phone to school to have this protection also. So please download the Family Zone App onto your child’s phone by the end of week 5 (23rd August) this term. If the App is not downloaded your child will still be able to bring a phone to school, but will not have access to it during the school day as a learning tool. Visit this website to learn more about how this software is being made available to our families and instructions on how to download the required App.www.familyzone.com/pasadena-school-nz

EPRO8Two Pasa teams competed in the first round of the Auckland EPRO8 competition that was held at Blockhouse Bay Intermediate on Thursday 25th July. After a night of showing off their engineering and critical thinking skills one of the Pasadena sides (Gucci for Life) won the event. The next 4 Pasa teams will be competing at St.Kents on 19th August and then the remaining teams will compete when we host the tournament later this term.

Pasadena Cross Country Next week, Pasadena Intermediate will be holding its annual Cross Country run. This event will be held on Friday 16th August and the first group of runners will start at approximately 12pm. This is a compulsory event and if your child is unable to run/walk it next Friday please either write a signed note or email your child’s teacher personally. Please ensure they have their P.E gear in their bags ready for next Friday afternoon. Parents are most welcome to come along and support their child(ren). I am also looking for any parents who can help with marshalling during this time please. We need at least 15 to help and make sure this event runs smoothly. If you are able to assist please notify Ms Hudson (Kirsten) via email: [email protected]

Student Led Conferences and Report Survey Thank you to all the parents who came to Student Led Conferences in Week 1. It was great to see so many parents come in, and I know the students enjoyed being able to share their learning and goals with you. As part of our Self Review process, we would love to gain some feedback on the recent Student Led Conferences and Student Reports via a quick survey. Your feedback will go towards informing our decisions relating to reporting in the future. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/J69DN39

The Westfield Local Heroes Award Kia ora, e te whānau. We need your help/Tēnā, āwhinatia mai. For all that he has done in establishing our Māori medium immersion unit, I nominated Jonathan Hughes for the Westfield Local Heroes Award. We have made it to the finals! There are 6 finalists, and 3 will receive $10,000 (50% chance, e te whānau). If successful, Mr. Hughes will use the money to buy devices to help those who cannot afford them for their learning. The number of students at Pasadena Intermediate School has doubled since Principal Jonathan Hughes was appointed four years ago, largely because of his family and student-first approach to education. An example of his philosophy is the Māori-medium class he introduced at the request of a group of parents. Although there was no government funding, he found a solution and worked with others to establish a best-practice model that is more than just a Māori version of an English-medium classroom. “Our full-immersion classroom is a huge success and something we are very proud of,” says Jonathan. If you’ve been to Westfield St. Luke’s lately, you might have seen his photo in the display screens. All it takes is 1 minute. Sports News Boys Netball Last week the Year 7 and Year 8 boys netball teams competed in the Central Zone tournament. There were 7 people on the court each game and the games where 9 minutes each half - we only got a one minute break in between! We also got lollies handed to us between these breaks! The tournament was a really fun experience for all the Year 8 and 7 boys that competed. Thank you to all the parents that helped with transport and those who came to watch and cheer us on during the day. Sersekal and Javahni Room 9
