Perfect your perennialgarden this spring
(NC) Repairing your garden after an extreme winter can take some time and effort. But consistency is key to keeping your blooms fresh and full year after year. Mark Beaty, live goods merchant at The Home Depot Canada, shares tips on how to prepare your garden and help your perennials thrive.
Preliminary cleanup. Fluctuating temperatures, frost and salt can all damage your garden
throughout the winter, so you want to act quickly to help your plants recover. Once the ground has thawed, clean up any fallen braches, twigs and debris from flowerbeds. Remove any frost-burned leaves and, on a warmer day, soak the soil in your garden with a hose or sprinkler to help flush the salt and any lasting winter residue.
Picking your plants. Perennials can be planted as soon as the ground is workable. Each
variety has a distinct blooming period lasting several weeks, so choose plants with different bloom times to ensure continuous colour. While regional assortment varies, some of our most popular perennials are hostas (easy to grow and perfect for shaded gardens), lavender, day-lilies (great for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies), dianthus, iris and phlox (with a beautiful fresh fragrance).
Maintaining your perennials. In the first few weeks, newly planted perennials require daily water-
ing to thrive. Keep soil moist to one inch below the surface by water-ing every day before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. throughout the summer. Prune older, dried flowers to encourage new growth, and at the end of the season, cut your perennials back to 6 to 12” above the soil level. This will help encourage growth the following season.

Shopping tips for laundry appliances(NC) Buying a new laundry pair can feel overwhelming — a trip to your
local big box store can feel like an onslaught of features and benefits. How can you cut through the clutter to find a washer and dryer that will truly make your life easier? Take a few tips from Mike Holmes, Canada’s most trusted contractor and handyman. For him, it’s all about three key decisions:
1. The right format. While front-load laundry appliances were all the rage a few years ago,
top load laundry pairs are making a big comeback. They’re just as en-ergy-efficient and often more functional, with a more ergonomic design and an agitator to get really tough on dirt. Plus, because the top-load style doesn’t require a tight seal, you reduce the possibility of nasty mould and mildew build-up.
2. The right features. While you may not use every feature and benefit on your laundry pair,
there are a few to look for that make a big difference. The smart dis-pense system offered by GE Appliances, for example, allows you to add up to two months’ worth of detergent at once — the machine will then automatically dispense the right amount for every load. 4 important tips about buying a home
(NC) If you’re thinking about buying a home this year, there are some simple things you can do to make the process easier and safer. Check out these tips from the Real Estate Council of Ontario, which looks out for buyers and sellers.
1. Shop around before you start shopping. You’ll want to find a registered real estate salesperson who is right for
you. You could ask friends, family or coworkers for recommendations. Once you’ve made a short list of salespeople, talk to at least three of them. Sit down with them and ask about their real estate experience, references, services they provide, and how much they charge.
2. Look them up on the RECO website. Before you sign an agreement, check out RECO’s convenient search
tool to confirm that your salesperson is registered and to see if they have
any disciplinary action against them.
3. Have “The Talk.” It’s critical that you and your salesperson have a serious discussion
about your needs and expectations. If you don’t have the skills or re-sources to undertake serious renovations on a home, for instance, it doesn’t make much sense to look at fixer-uppers. Make sure your agent knows what you want, and don’t want, in your chosen neighbourhood. Avoid frustrations by having a full and frank discussion with your sales-person.
4. Understand what you’re signing. Don’t get left in the dark — whenever you are presented with a docu-
ment, ask your salesperson to walk you through it, line by line. You might also consider hiring a real estate lawyer early in the process.

Be smart and safetyconscious when planting trees
(NC) The spring season is one of the best times to begin planting trees. But remember to be mind-ful of potential hazards in your path. Here are some tips from Hydro One on how to remain safe among trees and power lines:
1. If you are planting a seedling at home, make sure it is planted at least eight metres away from power lines. Almost a third of power outages in On-tario are caused by tree contact with power lines, so considering tree placement from the beginning will prevent outages in the future.
2. Low-growing evergreen shrubs that are plant-ed beside basement walls can brighten your home’s exterior while providing warmth and insulation for colder months of the year. Remember to plant shrubs at least 60 centimetres away from your foundation walls.
3. Plant with a strategy. A good windbreak in-cludes a mixture of coniferous trees, deciduous shrubs, evergreen shrubs and perennial plants. The right combination planted tightly together can shield your home from cold winter gusts. Even a single row of white pine trees can reduce the speed of wind hitting your home by 60 per cent.
