THE GUIDE

Welcome to the second annual 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon & Community Run Festival. It gives us greatpleasure to bring you yet another wonderful opportunity to enjoy everything the region has to offerwhile raising money for charity. Last year’s stunning debut attracted almost 5000 runners over fivedistances and $150,000 was given back to local charity groups including the event’s major beneficiaryRonald McDonald House Charities.

In our second year we’ve attracted even more runners from across Australia and 20 different countries. The already scenic beachfront course has been extended taken out the back streets and corners makingit even faster and more picturesque than ever. It’s also a fully recognised AIMS qualifying event allowingrunners to submit their times to qualify for international marathon events such as the Boston Marathon.

We’ve added extra events including Cricky’s Onesie Runsie and the Trade Secret Thong Run to providefamilies, businesses and the community to enjoy the evening atmosphere of the Sunshine Coast whileraising significant funds for charity.

We’re grateful for the ongoing support from our major sponsor partners including Channel 7Queensland, McDonald’s and Westpac and recognise the essential backing of the QueenslandGovernment, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Sunshine Coast Destinations and the Sunshine Coast

Airport in helping make this a must-do event and destination. It’s with this support we’ve been able to build on the event’s inaugural success toattract regional, national and international guests.

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank new and returning competitors, their support crew and families, the hundreds of volunteers who make thisevent possible and the Sunshine Coast community, which has embraced this as an iconic event for its ability to show off the region as one of thecountry’s favourite holiday and now event destinations. I wish everyone an enjoyable run festival and the best of luck in your chosen event.

Speed, climate and atmosphere have attractedsome of the world’s best distance runners tothe second 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon.

The course was recently certified by theinternationally recognised marathon bodyAIMS and the prize purse also doubled helpingto attract further enquiries from internationaland elite runners.

“To receive such high levels of enquiry fromelite runners across the world to come andcompete at our event in only its second year isexciting,” Atlas Multisports managing directorJason Crowther said.

“We want the course to be appealing tobeginners and social runners who want toenjoy the spectacle and atmosphere but wealso see it as being an enjoyable and fast coursefor professional and elites too.”

Leading runners include marathoner, KenyanJoel Kiplimo, who previously won theBlackmores Sydney Marathon in 2011 and has apersonal best time of 2:11:54 for the distance.

Fellow Kenyan Sam Kipkoech (2:13:01) whowon the Brisbane Marathon this month in 2:31is expected to be among the lead runners whilein the women’s event Sunshine Coast runnerRoxie Fraser hopes to defend her 2012 title.

In the half marathon Brisbane runner PatrickNispel, who set a new personal best of 1:07:37at last month’s Gold Coast Asics Half Marathon, will use the event to further consolidate hispreparation for the Melbourne Marathon inOctober and his long-term goal of representingAustralia at the 2016 Olympics.

Gold Coast-based Commonwealth Gamesmarathon silver medallist Michael Shelley willadd some extra speed and a little glamour tothe 10km event with a personal best time of27:59 and previous wins at the prestigiousCity2Surf and Gold Coast Half Marathon.

Event organisers haven’t ruled out thepotential of one day holding a race that attractsa calibre of runners that could challengeAustralia’s best marathon time.

“There is no doubt that the course is fast andexciting. With the right conditions andtemperature it’s not impossible to think that itcould one day allow a runner to break theelusive 2:10 mark on Australian soil,” MrCrowther said.

“These are ambitious yet achievable goals forthis event, but it’s an exciting prospect. Wehope it helps create an iconic community eventthat thousands of people continue to enjoy foryears to come.”

For the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon ambassadors training for theirrespective sports might be one thing but it’s quite another for those notused to the mental and physical demands of endurance running.

But it hasn’t stopped any of them from setting high expectations ofthemselves with surf life savers such as Josh Minogue and JordanMercer looking forward to the half marathon and 10km eventsrespectively.

Mercer, fresh from her third consecutive win at the world paddle boardchampionships in July, even toyed with the idea of running the fullmarathon before opting to give her body a bit of a rest after the six-hour 52km paddling event.

The current lifesavers join former Kellogg’s Ironman Hayden Smith andprofessional triathlete Casey Munro, who are relishing a speedyshowdown with some of the coast’s young guns.

“The event gives me an opportunity to promote exercise and getinvolved in what has fast become an iconic community event,” Smithsays.

“I ran the full marathon at the inaugural event last year and loved it. Ihope the event can help make Australians that little bit healthier.”

Minogue, who has twice finished 3rd in the gruelling Coolangatta Gold, has expressed an interest in switching to the long course triathlonscene.

He has entered the inaugural Sunshine Coast 70.3 in September andwill use the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon running festival to test his legs.

Other ambassadors include Active Living managing directors Dan andNadine Sullivan, who have incorporated pre-dawn walks up MountCoolum and Tough Mudder as part of their race preparation and up-and-coming triathlete Rebecca Ohlwein, who will lead an all femaleteam of elite athletes in the 5km event.

Getting up early is no problem for husband and wife personal trainers Dan and Nadine

Sullivan. The directors of Activeliving The Wellness Company regularly incorporate

challenging walks up iconic Sunshine Coast landmark Mount Coolum to take in the

spectacular 360-degree views and sunrise. Recently they had an extra purpose, encouraging

participants to donate money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. More than 55 people

joined them for the walk, helping to raise $300 towards their $1500 goal.

“If there weren’t charities like Ronald McDonald House all these children and their families

would go through these traumatic events without any support,” Nadine said.

“We’ve got about 60 people taking part in the event and there’s such a joyous feel about it.

It’s not competitive, everyone just wants to be part of it because it’s local. It’s given them a

goal and an extra purpose to get out, get fit and healthy and enjoy where we live. Seeing

that enthusiasm from people is what inspires us to continue doing what we do.”

Corporate Need for SpeedSPM Investment founder and director MarkDarling doesn’t run a typical investmentcompany.

The self-described sports fanatic may haveworked 80-hour weeks for more than 20 years tobuild his business but his love for sports coupledwith the Sunshine Coast lifestyle has seen himstart to channel some of that intensity intohealth and fitness.

In the inaugural 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon,Mark proudly led Team SPM to win the Love &Partners Corporate Cup with a combined time of2:05:14. The team was made up of 13competitors, including his three children all agedunder 10 who placed highly in their agecategories.

“Having these kind of sporting outlets has notonly helped me improve my health and fitnessbut it’s had a tangible impact on the business,”Mark said.

“We did so well in the running, it was a real thrillto see the kids getting involved and doing welland it’s been great to see our employees, families and clients wanting to take part as well.”

Mark’s involvement with local events andathletes (he is the naming sponsor of the

National Road Cycling team Pensar SPM) is hisown philanthropic way of giving back to thecommunity.

“We recently changed our business hours toallow people time to enjoy the great things theSunshine Coast has to offer whether it’s going tothe beach before the sun sets or fitting in anexercise class,” he said.

“It’s great to see how it’s impacted onproductivity and enjoyment. Staff are gettinginto the cycling and running. You can’t put avalue on having a healthy and happy workplace.”

LOVE & PARTNERS CORPORATE CUP

From Zero to Hero for HaddanBrisbane media advisor Kate Haddan didn't set a lofty ambition whensetting out to raise money for her first half marathon.

The 29-year-old who is raising money for the Cerebral Palsy League ofQueensland started out with a modest target of $500. But when thatwas surpassed within 24 hours she lifted the bar, not once, not twice butseveral times over.

"I was blown away by the response, support and encouragement frommy family and friends," she said after raising $5500 with a week still togo before race day.

Kate's charity recognises the support the organisation provided heryounger brother Freddie, who passed away in 1999 aged 11 from thedebilitating disease.

"I've got some great friends, family and colleagues and I think they seethis as a way to pay tribute to my brother who so many had a lot to dowith," she said.

"I get quite emotional about it but it's happy tears. Ithink he's had something to do with it and my

training. I am so excited about running my firsthalf marathon. It's about doing something I'venever done before.

"The money raised can help so much. $1000 willbuy someone with cerebral palsy a walker and

$150 will pay for an hour of therapy. It's so niceto see how much that means and what that

provides for people like Freddie."

EVERY DAY HEROES

Why we run for a reasonLast year the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon returned in excess of

$150,000 to local community groups including the event’s major

beneficiary Ronald McDonald House Charities. The marathon is just

one way we can raise valuable funds and awareness for those who

need our help. We thank all those Everyday Heroes for putting in the

time and effort to raise money as well as those who have supported

them every step of the way. We couldn’t do it without your help.

EVENT TIMES

PacersPacers may look like they’re having fun with their big smiles and brightballoons attached to their back while surrounded by a group of serious-faced runners. But it’s a job that requires the utmost concentration andresponsibility as they carry the goals and expectations of people aroundthem, it requires some serious mental and physical strength not tomention a generous sense of humour.

Among the pacers at this year’s 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon isrenowned Brisbane distance runner Bruce "Digger" Hargreaves, 60, whowill lead the 4hrs30min group in what will be his 125 marathon.

Learn how to get the most out of following a pacer by using this helpfulFAQ guide compiled by Bruce.

Q: How do I find or recognise a “pace bus” on race day?

A: Pace Runners can be identified by their “Pacing Flag/Balloon” whichshows the pace group’s (pace bus) target time. You can find thempositioned in an appropriate position in the start pack, which reflectstheir proposed finish time.

Q: Will a pace runner go by “gun” or “chip” time?

A: Where there are two pacers, the lead pacer will be targeting “guntime”, when the starting gun is fired. The second pacer will runaccording to “chip time” and will start their watch when they cross thetiming mat at the start line.

Q: Do pacers run even splits?

A: No. There will be a delay when crossing the start line (this variesdepending on the crowd size and start position). Once the field spreadsout a pacer will run even mins/kms. In the marathon a pacer aims to getto the 30km mark with a small time buffer (one to two minutes) as aslowing in pace is expected during the last 12.2km.

Q: Will the pacers help me achieve my goal?

A: Pacers will encourage and help you towards your goal and that’s allthey can do. Don’t use them as a substitute for missed training sessionsin the build-up to the race, nor can you expect them to compensate foran overly optimistic opinion of your fitness and ability. If you set arealistic goal, plan and complete a suitable training program then apacer will be an asset to you by stopping you going too fast too early (ortoo slow too early).

EtiquetteWhen you are in a group around a pacer(pace bus) treat it like a football or cricketteam. Everybody has the same goal, and likea team, everybody looks out for each other.

When running in a group remember:

● Runners are encouraged not to jostle or push nearbyrunners.

● Give fellow runners enough running room.

● Try to avoid stopping suddenly or changing directionwithout warning to avoid anyone tripping andfalling.

● At drink stations, particularly early in therace, it will be very crowded, but it’s importantthat not only do you get a drink, but yourfellow runners get a drink. If you are close tothe drink table take a drink in each hand andpass the second drink to a fellow runner whomay have missed the table.

● Do not monopolize the pace runners’ time. All Pace Runners will talk to you and theirexperience will be helpful to you but be wary ofsharing the brain’s trust around.

● You can help a pace runner by calling outkilometre markers when reached.

● Calling out that an aid station is up ahead.

● Remember pace runners are athletes just likeyou except they are there to help you achieve your goal. On rareoccasions when they run into difficulty and can not finish the race if youare feeling okay don’t hesitate to share or take over his/her dutiesparticularly if you’re running well.
