A Season of Thanks• Thanks to the City of Grand Forks for

funding our elevator renovation. This $42,500 is above the amount funded for the rest of the renovation. Hopefully by the time you read this, the project will be done. It will be just one more update to our building, but an update that was much needed.

• We hope to finish off the building updates by the end of the year. Please take time to enjoy your beautiful building!

• I would like to take this time to thank the board of directors for all of their work this year. It has been a very busy one for them with many decisions to be made.

• I would also like to thank the staff for hanging in there this year with all of our mess and noise. You continue to amaze me with your determination, professionalism, and caring hearts. I hope you enjoy working in the beautiful

new spaces and keep up the great work!• And thanks to you, our wonderful

clients. You are why we are here and why we love doing what we are doing. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact us. We will do our best to meet your needs.

• Many thanks to all of our donors who are joining with us to make sure seniors across our area can live on the Brighter Side of Sixty!

• I am so grateful to work for a wonderful organization that is doing such great things for our senior citizens. The board, the staff, and I wish you all a very blessed Christmas season and Happy New Year!

October 2016 Board ReportThe board met on October 15, 2015. Here are the highlights:

• Lorianne Fennell resigned from the board due to health issues.

• The board discussed the six recommendations from the Financial Feasibility Study. They were in agreement with recommendations #1, #2, #3, #4, and #6. Recommendation #5 is to “Build a strong infrastructure to support fundraising efforts of a campaign and major fundraising activities.” This recommendation had a lot of discussion, with most of the discussion centered on

adding three to four additional staff people for a campaign. There were many questions about how to pay for this and where to put these offices.

• Each board member commented on where we are right now with the expansion project. The board will decide by January 31, 2016 whether or not to move forward with a capital campaign.

• The November board meeting is for strategic planning.

The next board meeting will be December 17 at 11 a.m. in the garden level of the GFSC.

During bAD weAtHeR: listen to KNOX-1310AM, check www.wdaz.com, www.facebook.com/gfseniors, or call the Senior Center at 772-7245 to find out if we are open or not.

You are the reason the Grand Forks Senior Center (GFSC) is so wonderful! Each of you brings

energy, ideas, and personality to the GFSC so that we become the GFSC family. And so many of you rely on your extended GFSC family for support and friendship. To ensure others will have a chance to benefit in the same way, we ask for your assistance. All 2015 Silver Campaign gifts will directly support activities, meals, foot care, and access to services that will improve the quality of life for older adults in our community – your parents, neighbors, and even yourself. As of November 15

we have already raised $34,270! Thank you! Your donation will be doubled again this year. Gladys Amundson is matching all gifts, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000. Thank you, Gladys! GFSC VolunteersSince 2010, the Grand Forks Senior Center (GFSC) has been recognizing Senior

Center volunteers for their generous service to the many programs and activities at the

GFSC. Beginning in the January 2016 Silver Express newsletter, we will run a monthly “Volunteer Spotlight” that will replace our “GFSC Volunteer of the Month.” In this Spotlight, you may see some familiar faces of people previously recognized as GFSC Volunteers of the Month. Other faces may be new to you. We, of course, will continue highlighting GFSC volunteers, but sometimes we will also highlight other older adult volunteers in the community.

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support the Grand Forks Senior Center every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at www.smile.amazon.com, you will find the exact same prices, selection, and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. Please support the “Greater Grand Forks Senior Citizens Association Inc” at www.smile.amazon.com

“Share the Love 2016” is now underway. Subaru of America is donating $250 for every new Subaru sold or leased during the “Share the Love” sales event from November 19, 2015, to January 2, 2016. Subaru of America lets their customers choose one of five organizations to receive $250. Of the five choices, Meals on Wheels Grand Forks is the only local option. If a customer designates Meals on Wheel Grand Forks, the local Grand Forks Subaru dealership will donate an additional $50. If you or someone you know is looking for a new car, please urge them to support Meals on Wheels Grand Forks. The Grand Forks Senior Center is also partnering with Grand Forks Subaru to “Stuff the Trunk” with non-perishable goods. These goods will be distributed to those in need in our community. Look for information around the Grand Forks Senior Center for when and how to participate.

GFSC ResourcesTis the Season

Tis the Season . . . to apply for heating assistance and home weatherization. You may qualify for this helpful program if you have fewer than $15,000 in assets as a single person or $20,000 as a couple (value of home and vehicle are not included). Applications are accepted every year from October – May. Contact a member of the Resource Team for information and assistance.Tis the Season . . . to sign up for Senior Rider! Avoid slippery roads and sidewalks this winter by taking Senior Rider. If you are over 62, Cities Area Transit will pick you up at your door and drive you where you need to go for $3 a ride. Get an application and fi nd out if you qualify for discounted tickets by working with a Resource coordinator.Tis the Season . . . to consider having Meals on Wheels and groceries delivered to your home.If you, or someone you know, is 60 years of age and homebound in Grand Forks, Meals on Wheels is a great way to get a hot nutritious meal delivered by a friendly volunteer Monday through Friday at noon. Frozen meals are also available for Grand Forks and Nelson County residents. Call the Grand Forks Senior Center (GFSC) to determine if you qualify. You may even get a home visit from a Resource coordinator. Call the Anne Carlson Center at 701-757-4200 for grocery shopping and delivery, at no charge. Tis the Season . . . to prepare for the unexpected with an emergency response system. Given the choice, most people would prefer to live in their own home and remain as independent as possible. This is where the emergency response system can provide security and peace of mind. As we know, time is of the essence if you experience a fall, a medical condition, or other emergency. Delayed care may compromise your recovery and even your independence. Emergency response systems with a variety of options are available. Check with Resources for further information.Tis the Season . . . to organize. There are many benefi ts and services available, but they often require proof of income, assets, and medical expenses from the previous year. Do yourself, and the Resources team, a favor by sorting and fi ling your 2015 paperwork. This way you will be ready to complete applications when the time comes. Tis the Season . . . to plan for your future! Take the opportunity when family is gathered to discuss your wishes for long-term care. Get your wishes in writing by contacting your attorney or Legal Services of North Dakota, a non-profi t legal aid offi ce which assists low income and/or elderly North Dakotans with civil legal matters including Power of Attorney, Wills, and Health Care Advance Directives. Legal Services schedules appointments at the GFSC on the third Thursday of each month. Call Legal Services at 800-634-5263 to schedule an appointment.
