Match previewPhiladelphia Union take a midweek break from MLS action to welcome the Barclay’s Premier League’s Crystal Palace F.C. to Talen Energy Stadium on Wednesday, July 13, in a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.
This is the seventh consecutive summer the Union have host-ed an international opponent in Chester, with the most recent being the Premier League’s A.F.C. Bournemouth on July 14, 2015. Crystal Palace is making its second trip to Talen Energy Stadium after defeating Philadelphia, 1-0 in a friendly on July 25, 2014 in front of 15,482 fans.
Like most summer international friendlies for MLS teams, the match with Crystal Palace is crunched between a jam-packed schedule for Philadelphia. The Union dismantled D.C. United on Saturday, 3-0, behind first half penalty kicks from Roland Alberg and Ilsinho. Within two minutes of the second half, Ilsinho put the game away with a smash from close range.
The Union (8-6-5 MLS) dictated play with 60-percent posses-sion and held a man advantage for the final 25 minutes to move within one point of New York City FC atop the Eastern Confer-ence standings.
For Palace, the match in Chester will be the team’s first as part of its USA/Canada tour that also includes stop at FC Cincin-nati and Vancouver Whitecaps. In manager Alan Pardew’s first full season at the helm, the Eagles finished 15th in the Premier League table and made a run to the FA Cup Final, where they fell 2-1 to Manchester United.
Despite scoring the fourth fewest goals (39) in the league last season, Palace was held in place by a defense that ranked 10th in goals allowed (51). The team’s top all-competition scorer, Dwight Gayle, has moved to Newcastle United, but Pardew has since added Andros Townsend from Newcastle as well as James Tom-kins from West Ham United and Steve Mandanda in goal from
Marseille.
Townsend and Tomkins are two of 25 players that made the trip for the Eagles, who also includ-
ed signature names such as Jason Puncheon, Yan-nick Bolasie and Frazier
Campbell, but left behind notable playmaker Yohan Cabaye.
The Union can better its record against international competi-tion as the club currently holds a 5-6 overal record in interna-tional friendlies, including a 5-4 record at Talen Energy Stadium.
Against Premier League clubs, Philadelphia is just 1-5, with the lone victory coming against Everton on July 20, 2011, 1-0.

Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake and defender Keegan Rosenberry were voted to the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Fan XI and will join MLS’ best as they take on English Premier League club Arsenal FC at Avaya Stadium, on Thursday, July 28.
Blake all-star selection is his first as he has been sensational for the Union in the 2016 campaign. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft has posted a 6-1-2 record with four shutouts and 1.11 goals-against aver-age at Talen Energy Stadium this season.
Rosenberry has been a cornerstone for the Union in 2016. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft has played every minute for Philadelphia this season. Not only is he the only Union player to accomplish that feat, but he’s also the only rookie in MLS to do so as well.
Rosenberry becomes the first rookie to be named an MLS All-Star since 2013 and only the second since 2005. The Georgetown product recorded his first MLS goal in dramatic fashion against the LA Galaxy. Rosenberry found the back of the net to give the Union a 2-2 draw.
In 2012, Carlos Valdes and Michael Farfan represented Philadelphia in a 3-2 win over Chelsea at Talen Energy Stadium. Other Union players to appear in the MLS All-Star Game are Sebastien Le Toux (2010), Faryd Mondragon (2011), Jack McInerney (2013) and Maurice Edu (2014).
“It’s excellent. It’s great for the club be-
cause the Union badge will be on display
against Arsenal. That’s a special thing.” - Jim

Union Head Coach Jim Curtin
Opening statement...
“First and foremost, an official welcome to Alan (Pardew) and Crystal Palace. It’s great to have a top club come into our building and get the opportunity to play against them. It’s exciting for our group coming off a good result. We look forward to the exercise and again, welcome.”
On the lineup with a Steel FC match on Thursday and Red Bulls on Sunday...
“We’ll treat it the right way and play a tough group. Again, we’ll be smart with a knock or two that happened in the D.C. game. Ilsin-ho has a little groin issue so we’ll be smart in that regard. Tranquillo (Barnetta), we’ll see where he’s at. I think it’s a great exercise for us midweek to see where we stack up. We’ll also get some of our younger guys some experience - some much needed experience. They’ve worked very hard over the season to be rewarded and play against a great opponent to see where you measure up, is good. You think of the names Bolasie and Zaha on the wings and the speed that those guys present, and all the new signings that they have with guys that have had success at the highest level. As the Euro’s finish up, they have a very deep squad. Again, you test your-self against a top team. Crystal Palace is something we look forward to.”
On MLS’ growing image on the international scene …
“It’s grown a great deal. Obviously, their league in this country has grown a great deal, too. You can wake up on a Saturday morning and it’s three games in a row. The same thing is happening for us. The exposure we’re getting is great, the soccer specific stadiums, the backing from powerful ownership groups. It’s coming. It’s really making big strides in the U.S. Again, tackling that market. Every-body things the four major sports are football, basketball, baseball and hockey - well, soccer has made a real push. It’s not a matter of if-and-when, it’s here and it’s going to overtake some of those sports. It’s coming. To have the stage we had this summer with Copa America here, the Euro’s are on, to have Crystal Palace come in is a great chance to grow the game in this country because it is still growing. You hear Alan talk about the facilities, that goes a long way. The more clubs that come over and see this league is improving and getting better, the better exposure, the better players that will come here and it’s just better for the game.”
Crystal Palace Manager Alan Pardew
On how the States have treated them so far...
“It’s treating us very, very well. We’re coming to Philly in hot conditions, which is unusual for us. We’re from the Wimbledon area so if you’ve seen the tennis, a little bit of rain and a little bit of heat now and again, but this is quite intense for us. So, it’s good that we’ve been here a couple of days already because we needed to get used to it. The welcome we’ve had and the facilities have been excel-lent.”
On the Crystal Palace support he expects…
“Well of course our support is special at home. We’re very lucky to have a unique atmosphere. Anybody that comes to London should come visit us south of the river. American audiences that I have experienced are different kinds of audiences, a different kind of beat to the way that they support. It’s interesting. They get excited about corners and stuff - I love that. Our guys are a little bit more critical, maybe because they’ve watched it for so long at the professional level. I wish that we were a little bit more like that. The enthusiasm just here at the training pitch with the Philadelphia Union fans that came along, they were wishing my team well, but they are wishing we lose, which you would expect. There was an enthusiasm about that and I love that. And hopefully we can put a product on the pitch that brings that out in the crowd because a good game stimulates the crowd.”
On the team lineup tomorrow…
“You must remember this is our first game, tomorrow, of the season. We have to very careful a little bit with our players. We’ll be changing a lot, which is not suitable for Jim and me, really, but I have to do that, particularly in this heat. But, you’ll be looking at some of our talent that did really well last year that needs to now break through. I could pick out probably Sullay Kaikai, who had a great season on loan. He’s threatening the first team. He’s probably what you would consider a typical Crystal Palace player. He’s like Zaha, he takes people on. He’s a real threat, probably more of a threat to goal than Zaha, shooting. He will play tomorrow. Townsend will play his first game, so that will be something unique for Philly. And most of the big hitters will get a piece of the action tomor-row.”

Jim Curtin was named head coach of the Philadelphia Union on Nov. 7, 2014 after taking over as interim team manager on June 10, 2014. Curtin quickly made his mark on the first team as interim manager, leading the Union to its first U.S. Open Cup final appearance in franchise history. Philadelphia lost to eventual Sup-porters’ Shield winners Seattle Sounders in extra time, 3-1. He brought the Union back to the final in 2015, but they fell again, but in penalty shootout this time.
Curtin joined the Union’s first team on November 29, 2012, serving close to two years an assistant coach with the senior squad.
A native of Oreland, Pa., Curtin joined the Union staff at the academy ranks in June 2010 after joining YSC Sports in Wayne as the director of curriculum development. Additionally, Curtin was the Union’s Under-18 Academy head coach and was instrumental in the U-18s capturing the 2012 Generation Adi-das Cup.
He was named BIG EAST rookie of the year in 1997 and a three-time team MVP for the Wildcats. The All-American defender was a two-time first team All-BIG EAST selection in 1999 and 2000 and was the 2001 Philadelphia Soccer Seven Player of the Year. He became the first player from Villanova to be drafted into the MLS when he was selected by the Chicago Fire. The 2004 MLS All-Star played over two hundred games for the Fire as was named Chicago’s defender of the year in 2004 before finishing his final two seasons in the league with Chivas USA.
Curtin retired from the MLS in 2009 and moved back to Philadelphia with his wife Jen.
Earnie StewartSporting Director
Philadelphia Union hired Earnie Stewart to take over as the club’s Sporting Director on Oct. 26, 2015. He officially started with the club on Dec. 7.
As Sporting Director, Stewart oversees all Union technical and soccer-related decisions, working closely with the Union First Team, USL team and Youth Academy.
This technical leadership role is one the former U.S. National team and three time World Cup veteran knows well from his time as the Director of Football Affairs at AZ Alkmaar, a club he has guided to Europa League qualification the last six consecutive seasons.
Under Stewart’s technical guidance AZ developed a reputation for its innovation, player recruitment, and player development methodology. In 2015, AZ Alkmaar was honored with the Rinus Michels Award for having the best youth academy in Dutch football.
Stewart was a staple for the U.S. Men’s National Team throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, registering 101 caps for the team from 1990 until he retired in 2005. He was a regular starter for USMNT in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups and his 111 goals as a profes-sional in the Netherlands make him the highest-scoring American in international club play.
Stewart also played in MLS during the 2003 and 2004 seasons and was a member of the D.C. United team that won the MLS Cup in 2004.
