Happy Birthday to me!This edition sees S40 Local celebrate seven years delivering a range of great local businesses and news from around the community. 72 editions we've done now, not bad for someone who was given six months by a business advisor!Also I celebrated another birthday, my entry into the half century club very recently... "no I don't believe it" I hear you cry! What strikes me about age is I always expected to change, to feel more mature, more grown up. I still get excited about the same things now as I did when I was 20. I still get a childish smile on my face from riding my bike through the woods but I have to admit that I don't find myself skateboarding quite so much!So I was a bit confused when I read recently that apparently I’m likely to be at the least happy point of my life, being male aged between 45 and 59! Thanks for that Mr BBC. On a more local theme, local chap Mark Williams brings us up to speed about the charity CALM, helping to support people with depression.This month, read about Chesterfield's transporting past with an article on Stagecoaches by Trevor The Ink.. We have a business discussion with Autoselect and take a look inside Clever Crocs Day Nursery. Elizabeth Gowing's book is introduced to us by Ann Grinbergs as we get an insight into her travels to the Baltan Replublic of Kosovo and I wax lyrical about the community man-shed in which things get fixed! Do you recognise these names? The Comet, the Champion, the Amity, the Telegraph, the Hope, the Wonder? Once upon a time (around 1830) if

you'd asked a Chesterfield person about this list they would have told you straight away that these were all names of famous horse-drawn stage coaches; and they might add other names like the Traveller, the John Bull, the Bang-Up, the Defiance, the Wellington, the Pilot, and the Accommodation.Back before the coming of railways and motor vehicles the whole country was criss-crossed with a network of coach routes some of which passed through Chesterfield. The way it worked was that coaches went in stages from place to place. Normally each stage began and ended at an inn where the coaches would swap their tired horses for fresh ones, maybe every ten miles or so. Drivers would regularly swap too, perhaps doing forty miles out before getting off and doing forty miles back on a returning coach. Passengers wanting to travel would go to a booking office - normally at one of the inns – to reserve a place for their journey. Long journeys could take several days and the booking covered overnight stays at an inn. Along the way there were stops at (you guessed it!) inns where passengers could get out for twenty minutes or so for a meal or other refreshment. Basically, where nowadays we have railway stations, bus stations, motorway services, car hire, and hotels, people back then had coaching inns. In Chesterfield we had several such inns. The most famous was the Angel on the north side of the market (about where Meadowfresh is now); and there was the Star Inn, which was right next door to the Angel; and also the Old Angel on Packers Row (on the east side, near where the Savers shop is now). Other inns like the Falcon (the Barnsley Building Society), were used too.A coach could carry as many as sixteen passengers plus luggage, with most people riding outside on seats on the roof or at the back. Passengers had to pay more to ride inside. But if the coach was a mail coach – one hired by the Post Office to take mail on a route - only a couple of passengers were allowed

outside, with four passengers inside, to leave room for the mail and also for an armed guard provided by the Post Office. He would carry a horn, a blunderbuss, and a pair of pistols, and wore an impressive red and gold uniform. Mail coaches were all about speed and reliability, and by law they didn't have to stop to pay road tolls. And unlike normal stages they would never pick up chance passengers along the way. Coaches had four or sometimes six horses; the breed known as Cleveland Bays were favourite for this job.

A typical local journey was that of the Criterion coach from Sheffield to Derby. It would leave the George Inn, Sheffield at 6:30am; stop at the Star Inn, Chesterfield at 7:45; the Horse Shoes at Alfreton at 9:00; and arrive at the Tiger Inn in Derby at 10:30. It would leave Derby at 3pm and be back in Sheffield at 7pm.Here are some other local coach names and routes:• The Amity: between Leeds and Birmingham

(taking 15 hours) stopping at the Star Inn.• The Comet: between Leeds and London via

Kettering (taking 26 hours), stopping at the Angel Inn.

• The Hope: between Leeds and London via Leicester and Northampton, stopping at the Angel Inn.

• The Champion: between Manchester and Nottingham, stopping at the Old Angel.

• The Accommodation: between Chesterfield and Sheffield, from the Thee Horse Shoes.

• The Telegraph: between Birmingham and Leeds, stopping at the Angel.

The cost of travel was high, with even local trips costing several shillings; and a trip all the way to London would cost you over £1 even if you sat outside. With typical workman's

wages of less than £1 a week, this was very expensive, especially if you think what sitting outside in all weathers for 26 hours would have been like.The coming of the railways gradually undid the stage coaches. Coach companies lost their Post Office mail contracts to the railways and also lost passenger traffic between big towns. The coaches switched to connecting outlying towns with railway stations and so routes got shorter. Others tried to carry on, like the 'Old Original Nottingham Mail' (Chesterfield to Nottingham) which kept the word 'Mail' in its name although it no longer did any work for the Post Office. But that didn't save it and it shut down too.Many inns also lost business and had to adjust. The Angel Inn remained Chesterfield's top hotel, and used to run a courtesy horse-taxi service to the railway stations to pick up guests. Later it also swapped from hiring out horses and carriages (a traditional side-line for most coaching inns) to hiring out newfangled motor cars. It stopped being a hotel in 1915, becoming just the 'Angel Vaults' public house, and burnt down in 1917.Although they recognised that trains were faster, cheaper, and more comfortable, people rather regretted the passing of the horse coaches. Here's a description from an 1880's novel of a coach arriving at the Angel in Chesterfield earlier in the century: “Meanwhile the grooms at the Angel had led out into the market-place four sleek bays with shining coats and polished hoofs, and at the same moment you heard a distant horn. Suddenly the precincts of the tavern were alive with loungers and lookers-on.The topers in the smoke-room came to the window and looked out, the landlord brought his pipe into the street, and regarded the proceedings with pride. The horses champed their bits, and presently from the eastern corner of the marketplace came toiling along the mail-coach from London to Manchester, a picture of light, and life, and elegance. A whip flourished harmlessly over the steaming cattle, a horn blown merrily behind, a flash of red

and gold, and black and silver, and the coach pulled up in front of the Angel window; there was a rush of grooms and stable-helps; and luggage, horses, passengers almost together poured into the inn yard, and in less than five minutes the fresh team was harnessed. It was a sudden bustle and excitement, which lasted hardly any longer than the arrival and departure of the modern railway train, and it had the advantage of being more picturesque. You knew that it had come from busy cities, through quiet country highways, by pleasant homesteads, over chattering streams bridged by ancient ways; that children had greeted it from field and hedgerow; that it had passed low lumbering wagons and farmers' gigs; that it had halted here and there to have the horses' mouths washed out and the passengers regaled with foaming ale; that it was redolent of country lanes and grass lands, of hay and straw, and old-fashioned flowers. While we are thinking of the sight the passengers have seen, the whip is on the box again. "Now, Bill, let go their heads. So ho! Beauty; steady, old lass. Away you go!" Forward dashes the team, the guard swings up behind, and Mary Kirk, standing with Susan Hardwick at the primitive Post Office door, whence the mailbags had just been carried in and out, said it was indeed a bonny sight to see the fast coach change horses at the Angel.” (The Three Recruits And The Girls They Left Behind Them; J Hatton, 1880).So next time you walk between the Market Hall and the old Post Office spare a thought for the stage coaches that once went clattered over the cobbles there, and their drivers and passengers, their horses and grooms, the bustle and excitement, and the sights they once saw. There’s a kitchen where Rob and the team will prepare you fresh coffee and a bacon butty … if you time it right! There’s a single large open plan showroom for the vehicles, a preparation area and my favourite bit… (apart from the fact it’s all spotless) is the rotating turntable/photo booth. Here the

team can capture all angles of the carefully prepared vehicles, which they use in their adverts and online sales.“Typically we hold 30 or so vehicles in stock” explains Rob, “with the new showroom we can accommodate stock securely both inside and out, which the old area wouldn’t allow. “I’ve been running my own business for 19 years and delight in providing a relaxing experience with no pressure. We can make instant decisions about sales, the terms and conditions are flexible and we can tailor options to suit” explains Rob. “In many cases you can drive your new car away the same day. All our cars are meticulously prepared before they come into the showroom so there’s nothing to do to them before they leave with their new owners.“In the past the majority of our sales have come from the internet, people travel from across the country but we’re hoping to attract more local customers. There are a great number of people in Chesterfield that simply don’t know we’re here. Our aim is to become the number one destination for quality used vehicles in Chesterfield. “We’re keen to offer a larger number and greater variety of carefully selected vehicles to attract people down to see what we have. There must be a lot of people who enjoy seeing buildings transformed? So I can't be the only one who was wondering what has been going on

in Brampton Methodist Church over the last nine months whilst renovations have been underway to bring new life to the building at Clever Crocs Day Nursery. Natalie Johnson commented "we have completely transformed the historic 19th century building to offer modern, purpose built facilities and equipment parents have come to expect from us."Natalie is Excellence In Childcare's (EIC) managing director and said "Clever Crocs will continue my philosophy of giving children the best start in life by developing their knowledge, skills and attitudes in a fun, creative and loving environment, at the same time being affordable and flexible for parents."Natalie stated "right from the start we focused our attention on creating nurseries of the highest standard as we felt there was a gap in the provision, we are very excited to now welcome children to Clever Crocs Day Nursery."Former primary school teacher Natalie, who has two little girls of her own, realised her dream of opening her own nursery in Newbold seven years ago when she took over a failing nursery in Newbold and turned it round.The success of Cheeky Monkeys was followed by the launch in 2010, of the Jungle purpose built nursery and indoor play centre at Sheepbridge. In 2014, EIC opened it's town centre day nursery, Little Lions, in a stone, grade II listed building.Natalie who has a Master's degree in childcare and Early Years Professional status, oversees all of the nurseries. Clever Crocs is headed by Alex Hill, manager.The changes inside the building are a far cry from what was there before. Anyone who has previously been inside will remember steps down into a large church hall with a few smaller rooms up a flight of stairs at the rear of the building. I have to admit, the change is very impressive. All rooms are bright and airy (helped by the huge church windows) and the addition of the

upper floor throughout the building creates four very large rooms. There is a new raised floor downstairs plus a new indoor-outdoor area, kitchen and office.“The building did require significant change” explains Alex, “and once the builders moved out we think the result is fantastic.”The Day Nursery opened on 3 March and has been enrolling new children every day since. Open from 7:30am to 6pm they provide complete day care. “We’re able to provide childcare to suit children aged from 6 weeks to 12 years, with a Breakfast Club, After School Club and a complete wraparound care service. This allows us to take children up to 12 years old in for breakfast and then walk them to local schools and, if needed, pick up and return to Clever Crocs for parents to collect a the end of the working day. We also offer a Holiday Club to help working parents with childcare arrangements.”The rooms are split between ages and all are fully refurbished with new resources and toys to help with full development. There’s lots of baking, creative time, staff and children love getting messy!Children up to two years of age are cared for in the baby room. Routines from home are followed closely to ensure a home from home environment.

The Toddler room entertains those between two and three years old and includes small toilets to assist with potty training. The Preschool room caters for children between three and five years. Giving them the best start to their learning journey and getting them ready for preschool.We have an additional space used for the before and after school clubs, for dining during the day and can be used as a break out space with activities for smaller groups of children. Other new members of staff include Dionne who has returned to childcare after maternity leave and Becky, newly qualified, who started at The Jungle whilst work on Clever Crocs was completed. “Having four nurseries in the group is a real bonus” added Alex. “Each child is allocated a key worker and we maintain a personal plan for every child that

focuses on activities for the week, we consider the interests of each child and build these into the plans. Observations and continual development files are maintained throughout the child’s time at the nursery and are available for parents to discuss at any time” say Alex. “We have great parent partnerships, we hold events to get them involved in the nursery setting, picnics trips out, sports days, Easter parades and Christmas nativity etc and it’s also important to us to have feedback from them on our performance.”“It’s all about having fun and learning through play, I want to ensure the children in our care at Clever Crocs get the same level of care I would give my own children” says Alex.Clever Crocs' 82 spaces will prove to be a welcome addition to Brampton and the area. Mark Williams has been hiding something. For 15 years he’s been putting on a show for people, appearing that all is well in business

and at home. But after Christmas 2014 he suffered a complete melt down within four hours of being back at work. All was not well.Today Mark is keen to spread the news about male depression and the work he’s doing to support nationwide charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably). “My story begins over 15 years ago” explains Mark. “I work in the building trade, an area in which you don’t discuss real problems, you man up and deal with stuff.”I run my own successful business and on the surface everything looked fine, however, scratch the surface and things were not as they appeared. “It’s easy to dismiss real problems as something else, you might just feel a bit tired, ‘I’m just not feeling my normal self’ was an expression I used a lot, even my wife and family didn’t spot anything was seriously wrong.“In social situations I felt like I was always keeping a bit of myself back. I describe it as being like a bird feathering a nest, but meanwhile someone is trying to chop the tree down, I needed someone to help shore up the roots, but didn’t realise.”Mark has a daughter of eight and a son of three, he has been a hands on Dad with a lovely family, but he was struggling. “Being self-employed you’re under pressure all the time to keep things going and I was doing this, in fact work became the only element of my life that I could keep on track, I would lose myself in work but then have no energy for the rest of life.”It took a major turning point to make people sit up and take notice. “My life became out of balance, whenever I was at work all was good but I’d come home and just bury my head in the pillow for the rest of the night, I’d avoid any social situation and this very quickly started to affect work. It was a downward spiral to the point where I considered taking my own life” Mark confesses.“People often considered this to be a selfish act, but to the individual it seems the perfect

way out.” You don’t even consider the mess you leave behind.“There is a line at which things turn scary” explains Mark. “You don’t realise it but irrational thoughts become the norm, there really is no better way to describe it than a downward spiral with just one ending.”Mark’s situation was spotted by his wife and although she tried to make progress Mark just hid the symptoms away.“There are various ways in which people deal with things at this stage. Irrational decisions can lead to self-harm, suicide, some people go out and spend money they don’t have and debt mounts quickly.”“For me my melt down at work resulted in me getting the help I needed. Doctors’ appointments were made and I was diagnosed with anxiety, but behind it I was still depressed. Anxiety and depression are often lumped together but depression can be shown visibly as anxiety attacks etc.”The local NHS counselling services proved very useful, 121’s and group sessions about controlling the anxiety but they were not dealing with the underlying issues.“The more help I received the more my self-resentment grew, I just wasn’t feeling any better and I ended up in hospital after a very grim day, the lowest point of my journey.”The professional help Mark received from this point was phenomenal. “You can’t make the trip back to normality on your own” he explains. “You really do need support from others and my family were with me all the way. My wife had to keep reminding me I needed help and over time the message started to sink in, my rational moods started to last longer and I started to see some positives in life.”“The best way I can describe the last 18 months, is feeling like the morning after, it’s like I have a vague recollection of the night before but can't recall it.” smiles Mark.“People were shocked by the state I reached, I needed help to learn how to look after myself, how to dress, how to shave, things really were that bad. My health suffered, I was eating and drinking my way through depression.”Mark has been through a number of Chesterfield agencies and one that’s helped massively is the Campaign Against Living

Miserably (CALM). “18 months ago I was 21 stone and wouldn't have been sitting here talking to you. Today I’ve lost four stone and am planning to cycle the Tour of Pembrokeshire, 100 miles and 10,000 feet of climbing.”A technique Mark has found really successful has been a way to consider his thoughts and decide whether they are rational or not, he can now dismiss those that aren't important, things that, in a normal frame of mind, you’d never consider. He describes how the meeting we’re having now would previously have involved a list with possibly 15 negative thoughts, 14 of which should really be dismissed instantly, but his default setting had become ‘to over analyse things’, build them into big problems, preventing him from acting. “I’ve always had an interest in fitness, and cycling and with support from Fitism in Bakewell I’ve focused and shed the weight” enthuses Mark “I still get down periods but I can deal with them, I’m fitter, business is good and I feel happier than I’ve felt in years.”British Cycling have been inspired by Mark’s story and they want to talk about an article for their website in April, ahead of the Pembrokeshire ride.It’s been a pleasure to chat to Mark, eat cake and drink coffee as I learn about male depression and the impact it can have on family life. year old girl scavenging in the war-destroyed city suburbs of the capital Prishtina.Already familiar with the Albanian language, through her partner Rob Wilton’s professional European intergovernmental connections, and trained as a teacher, Elizabeth was curious why Gjelane was not at school.Initially she was not prepared for the consequences of the answer, but soon found herself volunteering to set up an educational project.Elizabeth Gowing will share her fascinating experiences and her

latest book “The Rubbish-Picker’s Wife” with an afternoon audience at Holymoorside Village Hall on Saturday 16 April at 2.30pm.She discovered that 96% of children from Gjlane’s Ashkali community were not finishing their compulsory schooling – rather they were spending their days begging on the streets with their mothers or rummaging with other adults through the city rubbish tips for useful or saleable scraps. non-governmental organization (NGO). Without political or religious affiliation the work is on education, environmental, cultural heritage and community support in Kosovo. Last month the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo. They undertook a broad range of engagements “to celebrate peace, reconciliation, youth empowerment and restoration” including a visit to The Ideas Partnership.The organisation has established some important principles in developing a strategy for helping these people in need by promoting helping people in need to help themselves and helping people in need to help each other. Over the last 5 years several projects have started including catch up education and bursaries for further study, children’s art and dance sessions, and adult literacy classes as well as distribution of clothes

and shoes, healthcare advice and medical supplies. Micro-finance projects including soap-making, shoe-shining, patchwork and decorative candle-jars have earned parents some very basic income and enabled then to get their children out of begging and into education. A few days ago I read an article about the iPhone. It was written by Matt Purdy and featured on pri.org if you’d like to check out the full article.

Basically it covered a tiny change that Apple had made to the iPhone: they changed the phone’s screws! No big deal you think, but have you heard of Pentalobe screws? No neither had I.What this means is that, if you want to get into your iPhone to repair it, unless you have a set of Pentalobe drivers, you can’t. OK so not that many of us have the knowledge needed to make any repairs but it makes it harder and harder to modify or tinker with the phone.Kyle Wiens, the founder and CEO of iFixit, says this; “We should have a presumption that we can get inside anything we own. It’s our product, not theirs, we paid them for it. They’ve made their money; we should be able to extend the product’s life if we need to.”This got me thinking. How many things do we throw out and purchase new? A friend of mine has on old tumble drier, the control knob has broken off, the cost of a new one is £38 plus VAT, the cost of the drier when new £99. What do you do in this situation? It seems more logical to buy a new one, but then you have the old one to dispose of, hello landfill, goodbye planet earth. My friend got some superglue out, this did the trick for a while, then one day stumbled upon the same model in a recycling yard… it was soon minus its control knob. Result.Recently, on a family weekend to Cambridge, my wife was on a marketing course whilst I entertained the kids and we happened upon the 2015 Science Festival. There were loads of things going on. Just ask me why we need GPS controlled tractors you wouldn’t believe it! Anyway, on our tour we came across Makespace. Makespace is a community workshop in Cambridge for making and fixing things, meeting people, working on projects and sharing skills.

The community run space, houses manufacturing and prototyping kit and provides the facilities to do amazing things. It is accessible to Members who pay a monthly subscription fee for which they get 24/7 access to the space to work on their projects, and can also organise events. On occasions, Makespace is also open to the public for events - we tagged onto a tour of the space which was fantastic. Makespace has three main aims – to support existing and new businesses, to raise awareness of and skills in engineering and manufacturing, and to provide a fun place for people to hangout and work on projects. The space has the latest rapid prototyping equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutter, CNC mill and CNC router, and kit for electronics, woodwork, jewellery-scale metal work, glasswork, and textiles. As a community resource, Makespace brings together a network of enthusiasts and innovators, the prototyping industry, consultants, businesses and educational communities in a mutually beneficial way. What Makespace also does is encourages us to take things apart, find out how they work and, if needed, to be able to fix them!Locally Monkey Park on Chester Street are doing something similar but on a much smaller scale. Each month they are holding a Repair Workshop run by Transition Chesterfield. Got something that’s broken? Then take it along and they’ll have a go at fixing it, for free (details in the What's On). I joked with them about the huge dent I have in the van… bring it down they said! I think it would be great if Chesterfield had a Makespace, to encourage us to learn and prolong the life of products we own. It would be a great place to teach the kids skills that are dying out… how to put a shelf up or wire a plug! Anyway, have fun fixing and see you on Saturday at Monkey Park, let’s see if they can sort my van!

Oil the chain and pump the tyres, the Brampton Bicycle Club restarts after the Easter Holidays.

After a successful start in 2015 the Brampton Bicycle Club will be restarting again on Thursday 14 April. We'll be back at Holmebrook Valley Park starting from 6:30pm and holding sessions for just an hour.The clocks will be back by then and coaches Alastair, Paul, Jake and hopefully new coach, Jim, can't wait to get started. We've tips and techniques aimed to increase confidence in children from any age who can ride without stabilisers.Last year was our first year and we held sessions during the Spring and Summer terms, one evening we saw almost 30 children riding in small groups honed on ability.Sessions are held at Holmebrook Valley Park in an area free from traffic and we cover basic cycling skills, cornering, riding in a group, track type sessions, cycling games, skills loops and much more.All coaches are BCF qualified or are working towards BCF awards, are DBS checked and local to Chesterfield.The Brampton Bicycle Club was established by people from the area

who recognised the need for a fun cycling club targeting children from the first turn of the cranks to early teenage years. Over the past few issues of the magazine we have written stories about our young students. All the stories are based on real achievements and only the actual names of the students are changed to maintain their anonymity. So what are the common factors that take the students to such amazing successes in such short timescales?Almost all our students come to us with a lack of confidence in their ability to do either English, Maths, spelling or grammar. The knowledge that they are behind in their peer group has drained their belief that they can ever be ‘clever’. They are holding themselves back in their work because they are afraid of making a mistake and getting a low mark. During our free assessment, when we set the level of their actual ability as a benchmark from which they can only go up, we talk to them about how they feel, what they are a bit unsure of and emphasise that at Kip we love it when they make mistakes because then we know what we need to show them. For us, errors are seen as a positive opportunity to learn something new.Each student has different needs and we have the ability within our resources to create a tailor-made learning plan with a focus on their individual learning needs and styles. Then we use a good mix of 1-2-1 tuition where we ‘show’ them what they need to know and computer based independent learning time where they gain the confidence to experiment and do if for themselves.

Together with a relaxed and informal learning environment, which can be a million miles from a school environment, our students are free to take control of their own ability. This massively boosts their confidence and the will to ‘give it a try’ without fear of getting it wrong. This is the stage at which parents and school teachers start to notice the complete change in confidence and performance of the students.

Polly and Ciara are two of our more recent success stories…Polly joined Matlock 18 months ago a year behind in reading and two years behind in spelling. She went from constantly asking ‘Is this right?’ to proudly announcing her final scores. Now she has improved 2 years 3 months in reading and 3 years in spellings.Ciara on the other hand, joined Chesterfield 8 months ago and was struggling with her maths having scored a 4/15 on the year 4 maths assessment. Within a short time Ciara realised she could do more than she thought she could and started having a go at new things with confidence. 8 months later she has scored 13/15 on year 4 assessment and a confidence boosting 7/15 on the year 5 test! That is approaching a whopping two year’s progress in 8 months.

Terminus Bowls Open for businessThe Terminus Bowling Club officially opened for the new season on 12 March in traditional fashion with Honorary President Tom Gofton bowling the Golden Jack, see photo.The Terminus is a vibrant club within the S40 community with around 100 members including 12 lady members with plenty on offer for all levels of ability.Planned and ad hoc social bowling sessions are available at all times during the week except when league matches or internal club competitions are being played. Special Wednesday morning sessions from 10.00am are open to prospective members to try the game with coaches on hand to assist and are available free of charge. No pre booking required.

Broadband UpdateThings have moved quickly since our article in S40, or at least Openreach have. A couple of local residents have been in touch to say they have signed up for BT Infinity!Looks like quick broadband is out there but you'll have to get in touch with your provider. Apparently people who were on the waiting list for BT Infinity weren't contacted, it was down to them to take the initiative.'All hail the power of the press' was quoted by one reader ... although I can only think it's more coincidence than any power we might have at S40 Local!

For those of a competitive nature we have teams in the CADBA and Welfare leagues. There are four league teams for experienced players, and new for this year, two development teams created to welcome and encourage new and inexperienced members to enter league bowling. We have qualified coaches in the club for any member, new or old, to help ensure a good technique!We hold a number of social events for members and their families throughout the season and also have links with local schools bringing the game into the lives of all ages in our local community.The club is always keen to welcome new members so why not call in sometime and see if it's for you?

"We were recently announced as one of the 100 successful bids from all over England" enthuses Simon Redding, one of Monkey Parks founders.The £14,000 grant will fund a surfaced path alongside the ‘Holmebrook’ with a new entrance on Chester St and new benches alongside the path. In addition there will be flowers, bulbs and trees planted and development of a sustainability plan for the park. We will be working in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council to deliver the work before the end of March 2016.Monkey Park will also facilitate forming a ‘Friends’ group for the park to continue to enhance this green space. By the time you read this it should be properly spring and noticeably warmer. We've had a generally mild winter through which lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators as well as more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus.1. If you haven't already done so, plant out first

and second early potatoes; they are traditionally planted on Good Friday, although the early Easter this year means it may be best to delay with the maincrop varieties, which should normally go in around mid-April. Remember that most varieties are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero.

2. Lots of vegetables (as well as many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go direct into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil.

3. If you’re not confident about growing things from seed, there will be lots of seedlings for sale in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a very benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t keep them in a heated house.

4. Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. If they need watering it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the surface of the soil appears damp, spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings.

5. If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year now is the time to save a space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops a really good start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month.

6. Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser.

7. As the days warm anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout.

8. If you have fruit trees or shrubs their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will to some extent provide their own micro-climate so will be suffer less damage (depending on the severity of the frost), and can be left to take their chances.

9. Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas against pigeons.

10. If it's mild there isn't a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important!
