David A. Diefenbach David A. Diefenbach, 80, of Silver Creek, died Sat-urday morning, July 18th, 2015, at his home, follow-ing a lengthy illness. He was born in Silver Creek, on November 14, 1934, the son of the late Laurin and Mildred (Campbell) Diefen-bach. He worked for many years for Ehmke Well Drill-ers in Silver Creek. In the early 1980’s he formed his own business, Diefenbach Water Systems, specializing in water treatment and wa-ter well pump systems. He was a lifetime member of the Hanover Fish and Game Club, was past President and Trail Captain for the Sunset Drifters Snowmobile Club and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Silver Creek. Mr. Diefenbach was a true out-doorsman and family man. Besides spending time with his family, he enjoyed fish-ing, boating, hunting, skeet shooting and snowmobil-ing. When he was younger he also enjoyed scuba div-ing. This winter he was able to go on his one and only snowmobile ride of the season when his grandson brought his sled to the front door, and with the help of his family, he got on the sled and both rode to For-
estville. Survivors include his wife Marsha (Newton) Diefenbach, whom he mar-ried May 12, 1966, in Las Vegas, Nevada, a son, Mark (Michele) Diefenbach, of Eden, two daughters, Tracey (Keith) Newman and Kel-ley (Rosario) Como, both of Silver Creek and a brother, Daniel Diefenbach, of Ham-burg. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Judi Lucas of Forestville, 6 grandchildren Mallory and David Dief-enbach, Matthew and Kai-tlyn Newman, Alexa and Myah Como and several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents he was prede-ceased by a brother Charles Diefenbach, a sister Nancy Schifferli and brother-in-law Rich Schifferl. Friends called at the Riles & Wool-ley Funeral Home, 39 Main Street, Forestville on Tues-day where Funeral Services were held Wednesday. Me-morial donations may be made either to the HOS-PICE Chautauqua County, Inc. 20 W. Fairmount Av-enue Lakewood, NY 14750 or to the First United Pres-byterian Church, 35 Park Place, Silver Creek, NY 14136. To post condolences go to www.rilesandwoolley-funeralhome.com.

First Congregational United Church of Christ held its 43rd
Annual Strawberry Social Thursday June 11th and Friday June 12th. We are proud of how the community came together to make this event a success. Everyone enjoyed the great food and the wonder-ful strawberry shortcakes. The weather was great and we enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. We were so grateful how Evans Center and Angola Fire Departments assisted us on Wednesday morning, the day before our Strawberry Social. We had a problem with a freezer in the church and had to call for assistance. Both fire departments responded very quickly and were very helpful with airing out the building. Timothy Dybdahl came down after the fire departments left and brought us an ice cream freezer for us to use. Dave Sheen brought us a freezer to use as well. It was great to see both of them volunteering their freezers. This greatly impacted our Strawberry Social, without this assistance we would not have been in a great situation to start off our Strawberry Social. Many businesses donated to help defray costs of our event such as Wegman’s donat-ed water, and Schwebels discounted rolls for our hot dogs and hamburgers.. Tops Market in Derby gave us a gift card which helped us purchase our Hoagie rolls. Also, Crosby’s for allowing us to store our ice cream in their freezers. You helped us make this event a success. We also had a Meat/Freezer Raffle during that time which was very successful for our congregation. Mike C. was the winner of the meat from LakeSide Market.

Special 150th Anniversary Lincoln Funeral Train Route Postmark
Available at the Farnham Post Office Tuesday, June 30th, 2015 was the OFFICIAL first day that the special pictorial postmark honoring President Lincoln was available. People were lined up at the Farnham Post Office door, anxious to get their envelopes, cards and letters hand-cancelled with this special one of a kind design. The Brant-Farnham Historical Society had and has Lincoln Enve-lopes and Lincoln Postcards free on a first-come first-serve basis (until they run out). The society also gave away a free Lincoln button to the first 25 people requesting the special postmark! It was a hectic but fun day for PSE Wally Samick and Postmaster David Tempestoso. Josephine Battaglia and Beverly Wasmund (Farnham co-Historians), were also there. The “Lincoln” Farnham, NY Postmark is designed by Rosalee “Tish” Hill. The “Lincoln” event is initiated by Brant Historian Patty Friend and the Brant-Farnham His-torical Society in cooperation with the Buffalo Office of the USPS. The project involves 16 Post Office Locations, from Buffalo to Ripley. Information on all 16 unique designs can be found at http://about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/pb2015.htm. Postal bulletin dated 06.25.2015. Collect all 16 of the “Lincoln” Pictorial Postmarks: available ONLY until 10.28.2015! Stop in or write to EACH of the post offices for your official HAND STAMPED piece of local history.

NOW HERE’S A TIPby JoAnn Derson
* I have a pair of pants I wear while gardening. The knees wore out, naturally, and I went to sew patches on the knees. I left the top of the patch open, and when needed, I slip in a piece of foam rubber. Magical knee pads! -- R.E. in Oregon
* Are you great behind the lens of your camera and love animals? Consider donating your time to your local animal shelter as a pet photographer. Showing Mittens and Fido off to their best advantage can mean the difference in their fi nd-ing a forever home. Check with your local rescue orga-nizations, too!
* To clean your tarnished silver jewelry, simply line a tray or shallow bowl with aluminum foil, lay the piec-es on the foil and fi ll with a hot water and detergent solution (NOT bleach-con-taining). You also can use baking soda and hot water. Swish and allow the tarnish to transfer to the foil. Use a
soft cloth to dry.
* If your car’s windshield or back window fogs over, try this trick, borrowed from the bathroom: Spread regular shaving cream over the window and wipe clean with a cloth. Buff off any streaks with newspaper. This will last a good while! -- P.P. in South Carolina
* Now is the time to tighten your cane-bottomed chairs. Flip the chair over, then
soak the cane with hot wa-ter and allow it to dry fullyin the sun.
* If your plastic wrap getssticky, place it in the refrig-erator. You even can store itthere to keep it easy to un-roll. -- L.K. in Arizona

Southtowns Catholic School Visits Chiavetta's Greenhouse
Southtowns Catholic School Preschool 3 took a field trip to Chiavetta’s Greenhouse in Angola. Mrs. Kellie Chiavetta explained about seeds, read them a book about what flow-ers need to grow and had a diagram of a flower so that the children could label it. After the snack, Mrs. Chiavetta sent them on a scavenger hunt to look for flowers. The students were handed a picture of a flower and had to go and find it. Evans Force 14U Finishes Second in Last Two Tournaments The Evans Force 14U softball team scored second place in the last 2 tournaments they entered. First was The DAZ-ZLERS DAZE tournament. The Force started the tourna-ment with a 15-6 win over the WNY Rally. Evie Butlak allowed only 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 and helped with the offensive with 2 runs and 2 hits. Tristan Mitchell and Sam Dils each had 2 hits and 2 RBI while game MVP Kymi Nance got a single and triple with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Next the Force won a close one vs. Lancaster Heat. Julia Hill was the game MVP with 2 hits and a masterpiece on the mound. She did not walk a batter while scattering 7 hits with 2 strikeouts. Grace Barker scored the winning run in the fifth. The Force finished a 3-0 Saturday with a 7-4 win over Amherst lightning. Game MVP Evie Butlak went 3 for 3 with 2 singles and an leadoff triple. Kymi Nance and Caitlin Burbige each had a double and a single and Tabby Allen hit a triple right after Evie’s triple. Julia Hill pitched the win al-lowing only 5 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. On Sunday the Force opened the day with an easy 13-3 win over the Wellsville Dawgs. Kymi Nance went 3 for 3 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. Evie Butlak added a single and a double with 3 runs, Tabby Allen had 2 singles and 4 runs and Maggie Mignoli had a triple and 3 RBI. Game MVP Sam Dils had a single and double with 4 RBI. Julia Hill had little trouble with only allowing 2 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts. However af-ter that the rains came and the tournament was stopped. NY Inferno was declared first place has they had the highest remaining seed and the Force second. The two were set to square off before the rain hit. The 2 16U Force teams also did well. Force Diamond got to the silver championship game and got second place when the rain cancelled the game and Force Widger went 2-2 los-ing a tough 2-0 game to the second place gold finisher. Next tournament for the Force 14U was Lou Gehrig. The Force opened with the Lancaster Heat. They jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to see the Heat come back to take a 7-6 lead. The Force managed to regain themselves and won 10-7. Game MVP was Camryn Adimey who has a single and double with 2 runs and an impressive game at third base. Evie Butlak also had a double and single while Tabby Al-len had a single and triple. Kymi Nance and Maddy Tempski each went 2 for 3. Julia Hill had 6 strikeouts as she survived the Heat come back. Next up was the Lou Gehrig Lasers. Evie Butlak only allowed the first batter to score as she shut them down on route to a 7-1 win. After allowing 3 hits and a walk in the first, Butlak had allowed only 2 more hits and no walks while striking out 9 total batters. Evie also had 2 hits as did Maddy Tempski who had 2 RBI. The big blow came from game MVP Caitlin Burbige who hit a 3 run home run over the center field fence. The Force finished Saturday with a 11-2 pounding of Xtreme. Julia Hill only allowed 3 hits and no walks with 5 strikeouts. Sam Dils had 2 hits while Caitlin Burbige followed up her home run performance with a triple that when along with Tabitha Allen triple. The game ended with Kymi Nance booming Grand Slam home run that easily cleared the right center fence. That shot earned Kymi MVP honors. Sunday playoffs started with Lancaster Heat being the Force’s first opponent. Evie Butlak shut down the Heat allowing only 1 run 4 hits and 1 walk as the Force took a 8-1 lead to the seventh. She survived a 5 hit attack in the sev-enth on route to a 8-4 victory. Evie Butlak and Tabitha Allen each had 2 hits as Maddy Tempski had a 2 run double and Cam Adimey broke the game open with a 3 run triple. The Force drew a rematch with the Lou Gehrig Lasers in the title game. Game was scoreless until the third when the Lasers had a 6 hit attack to take a 5-0 lead. Evans battled back to close the gap to 5-2 but just fell short to finish the game as second place finishers. Evie Butlak had a double and single and Maddy Tempski had 2 hits but it was not enough for the Force.
