The town of Rock Hill, South Carolina
Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, South Carolina and the fifth largest city in the state. It is also the fourth-largest city of the Charlotte metropolitan area, behind Charlotte, Concord, and Gastonia (all located in North
Carolina, unlike Rock Hill). Rock Hill is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Charlotte and approximately 70 miles (110 km) north of Columbia.
The city of Rock Hill and its surrounding area is home to numerous attractions!Rock Hill offers f ive museums that are located in the city, and many more in the area! Museums outside Rock Hill
include Historic Brattonsville, Catawba Cultural Center at the Catawba Indian reservation, and more museums located just outside of The city in the Charlotte area.
Rock Hill is also home to thirty-one parks, four recreational centers, one botanical garden, along with the many nature trails. The shopping is fantastic with Rock Hill Galleria, the regional shopping mall anchored by Belk's, Sears, JC Penney, Walmart (one of two in the city), and a planned Stein Mart, along with around 60 specialty stores and a food court. Manchester Village is another premier shopping center. The complex is anchored by nine
national retailers, a Regal 14-screen movie theater, and many other specialty shops.
Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina and the seat of Mecklenburg County. In 2009, Charlotte's population was estimated to be 716,874, making it the 19th largest city in the United States. A
resident of Charlotte is referred to as a Charlottean.
Nicknamed the Queen City, Charlotte (as well as the county containing it) is named in honor of the German Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who had become queen consort of British King George III the year before
the city's founding. A second nickname derives from later in the 18th century. During the American Revolutionary War, British commander General Cornwallis occupied the city but was driven out soon afterwards by hostile residents, prompting him to write that Charlotte was "a hornet's nest of rebellion," leading to another city
nickname: The Hornet's Nest.
In 2008, Charlotte was chosen the "Best Place to Live in America" by relocate-america.com in its annual ranking, based on factors including employment opportunities, crime rates, and housing affordability.
It was also named #8 of the 100 "Best Places to Live and Launch" by CNNMoney.com - cities picked for their vibrant lifestyles and opportunities for new businesses.
