Dear Friends,

As you know, our parish church will once again open its doors to allow those who wish to celebrate the

Mass in person. As we re-open the church for the sacraments, it's important to accept and understand some

changes. It's our responsibility to work together in providing a safe environment for all to celebrate the

sacraments.

Please, DON'T COME TO CHURCH IF YOU ARE SICK OR DON'T FEEL RIGHT. The dispensation from the

obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in effect until further notice. You do not have to come to church.

If you are sick, vulnerable, or up in years, STAY HOME, for your own safety and for the congregation's sake. If

you are uneasy or uncomfortable about putting yourself in a crowd of people under one roof for an hour,

STAY HOME, STAY SAFE. Our Sunday Masses will continue to be available on the parish website

(stpatshub.org), Facebook and YouTube.

We will try our best to sanitize the church after each gathering. The hymnals will be removed for the

time being. That also means you will need to listen to the lector as he or she proclaims the Scripture. We will

provide the congregation with worship aids (song sheets), which we will ask you to pick up before each

celebration as you enter the church. Sanitizer will also be provided for you.

Our church seats 1,000, we have plenty of room, so please distance yourself using every other pew.

Masks may be worn, but not mandatory.

At the Rite of Communion, all ministers will sanitize their hands at the credence table before the

distribution of Communion. Communion will be distributed at the 4 stations across the front of the church.

Distance yourself behind the person in front of you who is receiving Holy Communion. Please remember

the Eucharist is the true presence of Jesus Christ at all times. We need to maintain a sense of the sacred,

even in these difficult times.

As we leave Mass, please maintain the physical distancing and remember to pick up your own bulletin

and leave your worship aid in the pew, as we sanitize the church for the next liturgy.

Thank you all for all that you have done for one another and the parish in our absence from the

sacraments. We really take for granted so much, and when it is taken away we realize what we truly miss:

the love and support, acceptance and encouragement we receive from family and friends and church. We

realize what our faith and relationship to God really means to us.

A special prayer for all the men and women who gave their life in service to our country, and insuring

us our freedom, especially the freedom of religion. May they rest in peace.

Thanks for your constant generosity and commitment to our parish.

May God bless and protect us all,

Fr. Mike

OHIO BISHOPS PREPARE FOR A GRADUAL RETURN TO THE PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS/LITURGY Following the “Responsible Restart Ohio Plan” the Bishops of Ohio are anxious for the safe return to the public celebration of Mass/Liturgy. In the Diocese of Youngstown public Mass will be available beginning on this Monday, May 25. Here at St. Patrick's the daily Masses will remain on Monday-Thursday at 8:30 am. There will be no liturgy on Friday in order to clean the church. Public celebration of Sunday Mass will resume NEXT weekend, May 30/31. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass/Liturgy remains in effect so those who are most at risk, the elderly and those with serious health issues, do not feel obligated to attend Mass at church. Live-stream of Sunday Mass will continue for a time.

PRAYER FOR THE FALLEN

God our creator and sustainer, today our country brings to our memory those who have defended this nation in times of trouble.

They have sacrificed their lives to protect our shores from those who would limit our freedoms or enslave us to ways that are against your will. Bring all those who have died in service to our country into your heavenly presence.

We humbly call down your blessing on those still serving; grant your heavenly protection to these men and women, and open your Sacred Heart to give them peace and comfort.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Ever-changing hope Two years ago, her now 17-year-old son had a biking accident. He plowed into the boy in front of him who stopped suddenly. He got up off the ground sometime later with a few scrapes and a vicious headache. The headache still has not gone away. For two years he has been in and out of school. He's unable to participate in the extracurricular activities he loves. He struggles to remain upright for more than four or five hours at a time. He often faints and feels nauseous. His mom and dad have consulted several physicians and tried different medications and therapies. But their son's headaches persist. His mom remembers those first prayers for her son. "The hope fueling these prayers was focused, frantic, and frenzied. It was a hope based entirely on results, on causes, on effects, on miracles and magic." Now, two years in, she still prays for her son's headaches to go away. But, she says, "the hope fueling the prayer is softer now, quieter. It's an unclenched hope, one set free of expectation, clamoring and frenzy. It's a hope grounded in things not seen…" She has discovered that "hope is not about magical results—it's about the long haul and the long darkness. Hope is robust and muscular and ferocious and long suffering. Hope never gets so cynical that it can be surprised. Hope finds and names God in the world's most desolate places. Hope kneels on hard ground and years without shame. Hope gets in apathy's face and says, No, not good enough. Try again. Hope sits in the darkness—out-waiting torture, humiliation, crucifixion, and death—until finally a would-be gardener shows up at dawn and calls us by name. "These days I hope, not because things are even close to being OK, but because the God of the small and the mundane and the inexplicable is my son's companion in his pain. I'm learning, slowly and cautiously, to live with the mystery of the already-and-not-yet kingdom of God… "After all, what else is hope? Isn't it precisely the mystery that strains toward what I don't yet have? Isn't it all about the unseen, the unknown, the unreached? If I already had what I longed for, I wouldn't need hope. As it is, hope is my tether, my footing, my solace. It's a bridge, wider and sturdier than I imagined it would be, that connects me still to the God who loves my son."

That connection between God and this mom is what Jesus prays for in today's touching scene from the Last Supper. As the challenges and obstacles we face in our lives become more daunting, our perspectives may change, our understanding may become clearer, our prayers may be re-focused, but the hope in that connection between God and us remains. May the hope of Jesus' prayer the night before he died be the center of our constant trust that God will transform our Good Friday crucifixions into Easter resurrections.

STEWARDSHIP DEACON JOHN'S STEWARDSHIP COLUMN

The word “deacon” is derived from the Greek word diakonos which is a standard ancient Greek word meaning servant. The first deacon was Saint Stephen. The duties of the first deacons were to serve the widows and the orphans in their Christian community. The deacons of today’s church, like their predecessors, are called to be servants to the people of God. I have been blessed to have witnessed the example of service to Christ and Mother Church in my many years at our parish. I have known wonderful priests, deacons, sisters, and hundreds of men and women I am blessed to call my brothers and sisters. You have helped me become a better person and deacon. We are a vibrant parish. I truly believe that a large part of our success is due to our willingness to embrace the spirituality of stewardship. For some this understanding of stewardship may seem overcomplicated. But for the people of St. Patrick’s Parish, you have simplified stewardship to the true essence of its meaning. Be the best servant you can be, love God and love your neighbor. Thank you for inspiring me. Love,

Deacon John OF INTEREST IN THE AREA
