Kim Bailey & Chris Jakicic
What inspired you to develop books and professional development focused on common formative assessment? As practitioners involved in supporting the implementation of professional learning communities, we’ve encountered many teams struggling with the process of designing and using common assessments. In fact, many teachers we’ve met believed that they didn’t have the skills to write quality assessments. To address this challenge, we wanted to develop a process that real teachers in real schools could accomplish with limited common planning time. Our goal has always been to make the process practical and help teams see that they are, in fact, very capable of developing quality assessments.
What speci c challenges do you hope to help educators overcome? Many teams use assessment data to identify students who didn’t learn, but don’t always effectively use the data to know what to do next for students. We want to help teams move beyond the
step of identifying students who need help, to actually using the information to diagnostically determine the speci c support that they need.
In addition, one of the hallmarks of the PLC process is that high-performing teams engage in collective inquiry about their
own practices. Our experience has been that sometimes teams fear that comparing assessment results will result in uncomfortable discussions about teacher quality. Instead, we recommend protocols for data discussions that take away the focus from comparing teachers to each other and instead focus on which strategies work best for different students.
What will educators nd most valuable in your resources and professional development? We empower teams with doable and understandable processes, including the “why” behind the work. For example, we include information to assist teams’ understanding of the value behind unwrapping standards into learning targets, and provide a practical protocol to do this work. Our new book also includes an implementation road map that can be used by teams, schools, and districts to determine their current reality and then strategically plan their next steps.
What do you feel is the next step in your work to support teachers? We need to help teams keep their focus on how to effectively use formative assessments in their work. Too often, the focus has been on high-stakes tests that provide a “one shot” picture of student learning. Instead, they need to keep focusing on the essential learning targets that all students must know.
