the_week@horizon v05.13.12page 2 of 12 A Thank You Note * by Peggy Gill * horizonuu.org

Love is the Doctrine of our Church...

Gratitude is an interesting emotion. It is humbling because you recognize how important others are in your life and that the bonds that connect you to others are essential to your very existence. Yet, gratitude is empowering because you see all that can be accomplished when people work together. Gratitude is tied to the very goodness of the human spirit to reach out to others. Over the last few weeks, I have taken the time to closely examine this emotion as I moved out of my position as Interim DRE. My feelings almost overwhelmed me. How do I ever thank all the people at Horizon who made it possible for me to complete this Interim assignment? Our staff and Board provided guidance to lead me through the year. People who set their own needs aside to work as teachers, advisors and helpers throughout the year. People who never failed to offer me encouragement and a smile every Sunday. People who cared enough about the youth at Horizon to give more than was ever asked or expected. People who never criticized when I dropped the ball, but continued to smile and support me, and of course our wonderful youth who continue to inspire me. My life has been truly enriched over the last year and I deeply appreciate the opportunity that was afforded me to serve a church that embodies all that I believe. I now know how fully Horizon embraces the phrase that we recite each Sunday, “Love is the doctrine of our church.” It is woven into the very fabric of our being. I am truly grateful for the love that is Horizon.

the_week@horizon v05.13.12page 3 of 12 A Note from the DLRE * By Lauren Daniell * [email protected]

Scenes from Children’s RE last Sunday It’s so nice to be back at Horizon after having been away a whole week at General Assembly in Louisville. The children are settling into the summer routine nicely and enjoying their lessons about nature and the UU Principles. Last Sunday the students learned about the First and Second UU Principles and made forests to reinforce lessons from their story about kindness. I enjoyed watching them do their lessons and took a few pictures to show you the wonderful work they were doing with their teachers.

Pre-Kindergarten class making trees from construction paper with tissue paper leaves

Elementary classes making paper bag twist trees to create a forest. How beautiful! All this could not happen without all the fantastic summer volunteer teachers. A big thank you goes out to Peggy Gill for keeping things running while I was away, and all our June volunteers: Judy Meador, Beth Bargar, Randy Lisbona, Taylor Beach, Megan and Daryl Williams, Judith Lane, Mary Morris, Rowland Harvey, Betty Crane, Menaca Padakandla, Kimberly Jones, Annette Helmcamp, Christy and Chris Thompson, Kate Gengo, Ellen Bratton, Beth Simmons, Susan and Peter Campagna, Carolyn Biddulph, Teresa Wolfe, Kip Nettles and Marty Wertheim. I am sure there are countless other unnamed volunteers who stepped up at the last minute to help out, too! Thank you all! Yours in faith, Lauren

Leadership Retreat Coming Soon to Horizon Please put August 17, 9:30 to 3:30 pm on your calendar. We are planning a wonderful leadership retreat for all interested members. We hope to get 30 or so participants. The Board and Committee on Ministry will participate, but it is for members who will be our future leaders in particular. There is no obligation associated with the retreat, but we do hope to encourage everyone to discover your leadership style. It will be packed with information on the coming year, calendar, plans, ministerial transitions, Interim Minister Plans, Strategic Plans, but we have also built in the programs that have made Horizon such a great church. It is the healthy church practices that your leadership has incorporated into their culture that keep us healthy. Come learn about your Myers Briggs style and how you fit into the leadership picture. Lunch will be provided.
